beards

Last night’s recap: The Red Sox have sprinkled their magical beard dandruff on Grady Sizemore and turned him into a player again. It’s already cost the Yankees a game in the standings and Skinny C a notch in the loss column.

Today, I’d prefer the Yankees to win. Whaddya say?

Brett Gardner LF
Brian Roberts 2B
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Carlos Beltran DH
Brian McCann C
Alfonso Soriano RF
Kelly Johnson 1B
Yangervis Solarte 3B
Dean Anna SS

ok, let's do this. Let's Go Yan-Kees!

2 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:09 pm

Nice lazy Saturday afternoon. Dogs have been to the park, shopping done, windows open to air out the house.

3 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:14 pm

Uh oh.

4 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:16 pm

Tell me again, Flash, how good Kuroda's stuff is today. Oi! $$&$&$ Ortiz!

5 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:20 pm

phew

6 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:20 pm

Good 3-1. That was tricky.

7 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:21 pm

ok! That was making me very nervous.

8 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:21 pm

Phew.

9 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:27 pm

This offense puts me to sleep.

10 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:30 pm

Zzzzzzzz..... Lol....

11 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:30 pm

Wake up, Seamus!

12 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:31 pm

there we go! I'm awake!

13 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:33 pm

Lackey is such a raging jackass douche.

14 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:37 pm

The two run homer giveth, and the two run homer taketh away.

15 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:42 pm

Okay, well, we have more outs left. But I liked having more runs. That was better.

Win Expectancy = .58.

16 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:45 pm

[15] i'm down with this more runs idea.

17 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:54 pm

That was a nice nap. What happened?

18 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:56 pm

[17] AJ F-ing Pierzynski happened.

19 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 12:57 pm

Good. This time let's turn the extra outs into runs.

20 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:00 pm

Brett has an annoying habit of watching pitch after pitch sail through the strike zone.

21 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:01 pm

[18] I hate that guy.

22 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:02 pm

Cano has a .425 OBP, in case anyone was wondering. I believe that's even higher than Brian Roberts'.

23 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:03 pm

No complaints about Ellsbury, though.

24 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:04 pm

Hey, I just remembered, rbj: how do you like having Jacoby on our team? (He just added 2% to our win expectancy by stealing.)

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:05 pm

Whoops, but Carlos gave back those points and then some.

26 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:06 pm

(22). Sigh...

27 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:12 pm

Come on, Hero, tighten it up. Can't walk Jonathan Herrera. That's no good at all.

28 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:13 pm

[24] love having a Jacoby playing for the Yankees.

29 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:18 pm

McCann can!

30 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:18 pm

nice!

31 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:19 pm

woo hoo!

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:20 pm

He'll yeah!

33 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:20 pm

This is more fun.

34 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:20 pm

SORI!!

35 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:21 pm

woo hoo!
Belly to belly

36 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:29 pm

I bet my grandson's enjoying this game - 5 HRs in 4 1/2 innings!

37 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:30 pm

Shutdown innings are not supposed to begin with lead off doubles. Especially from mlp.

38 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:30 pm

Time for a Big Pop-Up.

39 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:31 pm

Sometimes I scare myself.

40 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:31 pm

3 replays on Ortiz pop up to the infield. Wow

41 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:32 pm

Stranded Little Pony.

42 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:34 pm

[36] Did I miss a home run?
Beltran, McCann, Soriano, Idiot. I count four.

43 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:43 pm

Sori sorry

44 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:43 pm

[42] my bad! I got too excited. Grandson just texted photo from his vantage point at Stadium, he's in 2nd row field level next to the white bricked in area. Oops Sori...

45 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:44 pm

That is the kind of ball I drop in softball.

46 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:49 pm

No harm.

47 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:52 pm

Sigh. Imagining if Beltran had been wearing pinstripes since 2005.

48 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:53 pm

This is a good game.

49 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:53 pm

There's #5!

50 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:53 pm

Now it's 5 !

51 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:53 pm

Always nice to slap the slack-jawed mouth-breather around a bunch.

52 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:54 pm

I have to admit, I was not at all excited by the McCann acquisition. If he can actually hit, it's a great pick-up. Great.

53 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 1:55 pm

[49] [50] Yes, I now understand that Coleman's grandson was reporting from the future!

[51] And when he's throwing to the drooling ape it's even better. Easily my least-favorite battery of all time.

54 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:00 pm

Slacked jawed mouth breather and drooling ape. Love it. : )

55 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:00 pm

[53] yes! he's in right field! just saw him peeking out from behind Napoli's butt.

56 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:11 pm

My little spin out.

57 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:11 pm

Wow, Dusty looked funny!

58 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:14 pm

63 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:21 pm

Bah.

64 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:21 pm

That Ortiz AB was a thing of beauty.

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:22 pm

Dammit, if you're going to hit the douchebeard ... HIT THE DOUCHEBEARD.

66 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:22 pm

Dammit!

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:22 pm

GODDAMMIT SOLARTE.

68 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:23 pm

Shite.

69 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:23 pm

damn it, we had him at third. argh!

70 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:26 pm

Carp got hooked.

71 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:26 pm

Nice play, assholes.

72 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:26 pm

In case McCann wasn't already the star of the game (which he was)...

73 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:27 pm

Uh ... oops?

Have to imagine Carp biffed a sign there ...

74 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:27 pm

Dumb steal attempt...

75 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:29 pm

They may have figured McCann wouldn't throw with the runner on third...

76 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:33 pm

Get those runs back.

77 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:33 pm

[75] Or that he'd get a waste pitch to run on.

You know, I'd like the bunt there a whole lot more if it had come AFTER Gritner had already stolen 2nd.

78 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:39 pm

Double steal? Just cause they can?

79 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:40 pm

Pierzinski has terrible caught stealing percentage...

80 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:43 pm

Bah! Tough pitch.

81 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:43 pm

Oof. Carlos.

82 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:44 pm

Oooohhhhhh.

Nice play by Xander.

83 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:45 pm

Just when I thought the shine was starting to come off of Port Jervis ...

89 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 2:59 pm

There's one back.

90 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:02 pm

91 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:02 pm

Damn, Anna hit it too hard to score Port Jervis from 1st.

92 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:02 pm

Just tuned in from sunny Florida. Nice to see the youngun' s playing well. Pip Jervis and Santa ana!

93 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:03 pm

Oops.

94 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:04 pm

Shit! Smart move by the SS unfortunately.

95 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:04 pm

yeesh. This is a lame use of a challenge. When standing up his foot left the bast.

96 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:04 pm

I'll take it.

97 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:04 pm

He should have been called out.

98 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:05 pm

Keep up the good work Mr. Roberts.

Dang, how much more can I hate AJ Peerginsky? A Red Sox?
Just win this thing?

103 coleman42   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:13 pm

[101] I'm happy with everyone else getting a hit.

104 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:16 pm

Good job boys.

Now, win the series tomorrow night!

(it'll give me something to watch while I wait for E2 of GoT to show up for torrenting!)

109 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Apr 12, 2014 3:18 pm

I regret missing most of it, nice win!

110 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 12, 2014 8:41 pm

Watching now, great game. Go Go McBelCann!

Big Papi: does anyone get more free passes then this guy? Pimps every home run, whines on strike outs, named on a 'list' but gets to take selfies with the president. A-Rod gets on a 'list' and is banned for a year..it's crazy.

111 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 12, 2014 9:14 pm

[110] Dude, it's Big Papi's world. We just live in it.

I set the alarm for 2:00 AM today, saw the whole beautiful game and went back to bed.

It was well worth it.

112 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 12, 2014 9:50 pm

I don't know if you guys are still up, but we are just rolling into lunch time out here.

I barely noticed that Jeets was out today, I thought "something" was missing, but it took me a few innings to figure it out. My conclusion is that, apart from our "Fantastic 5" starters (who are a joy to watch), this team is rather milquetoast, especially when Ichiro is sitting.

Ellsbury is exciting, but he's not much of a character. Soriano is really the only starting player with a dynamic personality, IMHO.

Solarte is a breath of fresh air with his youthful enthusiasm, but how long will his honeymoon last?

Of course that doesn't mean I'm not happy to have McCann behind the plate. He is turning out to be the most important move of the off season.

113 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 12, 2014 9:55 pm

[112] Solarte is a breath of fresh air with his youthful enthusiasm, but how long will his honeymoon last?

As long as they win, beybayyy, as long as they win...

114 Chyll Will   ~  Apr 12, 2014 10:04 pm

I wish i could have checked this game out, but had some long-needed rec-walking at Rockefeller State Park and missed out. Sure would like to do another recap soon, so I hope they can repeat this performance on my watch >;)

As it is, this team will take a bit of time to get all its moving parts in gear; a lot of which are refurbs or replacements. But if they hold up for the next few months, I don't see this team missing out on the playoffs. That's a mighty big IF given what we're dealing with; the keys are C.C. and Teix and whether or not they stay healthy and produce even average numbers this year. Not so worried about the rest of the crowd as the Yanks do have depth they didn't have the year before.

And, er, it may be a little too early to tell, but I think Jeter should DH a lot more than he plays the field, no?

115 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 6:27 am

[114] I think it's time to call the insurance company about Teix..
