"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Sixes and Sevens

IMG_3802

The Yankees are either going to be 7-6 or 6-7 after tonight and that’s not much to notice. But taking three out of four from Boston feels like it might drive the season in the right direction, doesn’t it? Plus three of four from Boston is s feel-good story no matter the time of year.

Brett Gardner LF
Carlos Beltran RF
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Alfonso Soriano DH
Brian McCann C
Yangervis Solarte 2B
Kelly Johnson 3B
Francisco Cervelli 1B
Dean Anna SS

No Jeter again, but all his vitals check out. Maybe this is just Joe Girardi channeling his inner Popovich. If you’ve got nothing to do tomorrow, enjoy the game tonight.

Sunday night Yankees' game, just the perfect thing to watch while I wait for this week's Game of Thrones episode to show up for torrenting.

2 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 6:59 pm

And really, don't we all remember Derek Lowe's great run in Pinstripes?

3 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:02 pm

AAAAAAAAAGH.

30 seconds into the broadcast and I'm already sick of Kruk's nonsense.

4 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:13 pm

When the visitors get a man on first with one out in the first, their win expectancy is exactly what it is at the beginning of the game. The out and the single cancel. I find that surprising.

5 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:16 pm

New Mad Men tonight!

6 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:17 pm

Sweet!

7 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:17 pm

[5] I know, and [1]. Competition for the big tv in our house!

8 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:22 pm

Beltran batting second.
That actually makes sense! Does Joe have a consultant now for line-up construction?

9 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:24 pm

Jacoby is loving this series.

10 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:26 pm

OH JESUS CHRIST

11 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:27 pm

[9] Yes I am.

oh fer crying out loud.

12 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:28 pm

Argh!

Do-over? I was confident Sori would get the run in, at least.

13 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:29 pm

Jesus jumping Christ on a teeny tiny pogo stick ... are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?!@?!?!!?

::facepalm::

14 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:30 pm

[7] Tape. Mad. Men.

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:31 pm

[15] Trust me on this one ...

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:32 pm

Also, how the hell did we hit the ball that hard that inning and not score a single fucking run?!?!!??!

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:34 pm

Sorry, but that out's on Taco.

18 Jon DeRosa   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:36 pm

The broadcast did an OK job of that f-up, I thought. But too much hedging to Beltran. I'd give 100% of the blame to Ellsbury. Beltran wasn't sprinting, but he was running hard.

19 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:36 pm

[15] You mean, you have inside info on GoT?

20 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:37 pm

[14] No DVR

21 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:39 pm

[18] He's not going to beat Ellsbury in a 90 foot race.

22 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:39 pm

GODDAM IT.

23 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:40 pm

OUT! By a long shot.

24 Jon DeRosa   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:40 pm

There is having bad luck and there is making bad luck. The Yanks are losing because of the latter.

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:40 pm

Hah.
Baserunning blunders galore.

26 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:41 pm

Grrrrrrrr, stabby, stabby.

27 Jon DeRosa   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:43 pm

Being on 3rd with 2 outs is slightly better than being on 2nd, but whatever advantage Ellsbury gains the Yankees by advancing is nowhere near the risk of getting gunned down, ending the inning, and as we saw, erasing a run.

28 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:47 pm

[19][20] Just sayin', I think y'all's gonna wanna watch this one live ...

29 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:48 pm

That's good. Doubront has had some really bad games when he started walking guys. Let's hope this is one.

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:48 pm

I swear, it's only the 2nd inning ... and already I can feel myself getting stupider listening to John Kruk ...

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:50 pm

[28] It's this season's episode that was written by GRRM himself ... I'll leave it at that.

32 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:51 pm

I just got back from skiing in 80 degree weather at our local joint. They opened up for the weekend b/c they still had a large base of snow. Skiing, GOT, Madmen, Yankees-Red Sox, oh my! Quite the funday Sunday! : )

33 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:52 pm

Holy Shit. Cervelli is playing 2b. WTF!

34 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:53 pm

[28] Also no HBO.

35 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:54 pm

[33] Oh, couldn't be. It'll be an 80 degree day on the ski slopes before Frankie plays second base!

(Now first base, that's a different story.)

36 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:55 pm

[34] We get HBO for GoT season. Then cancel it. (Verizon lets you do this -- my brother was shocked when he heard.)

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 7:59 pm

[34] HBO? Who needs HBO? All hail the intertubes!

38 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:05 pm

[37] But then I'd have to go from 36" to 20" with worse sound. And I'm trying to avoid getting sucked into new series. After Babylon 5 & Battlestar Galactica I needed a break, somehow wound up involved with Mad Men.

39 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:05 pm

Hi folks,

Just settling back into Atlanta after playing the big Allman Brothers festival in Florida this weekend.

I saw our hard hits and the ridiculous baserunning gaffe. Also saw the bollocks in the 2nd and the shit sox scoring.

Unfortunately, I've had to hear Kruk. What a tool...

RUN GRITNER!!!

40 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:05 pm

[11] Is your last name Jacoby?

41 coleman42   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:06 pm

Who cares about the Brewers? I just turned off ESPN audio...

42 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

woo-hoo!

43 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

BELI!!!

*Now* you can trot home ; )

44 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

Just flicked it over.

45 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

That makes up for a whole lot of shitty base running!

46 coleman42   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

Yanks ahead! Bet the ESPN boys love that.

47 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:08 pm

[41] Wise man. Saved about a million brain cells.

48 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:09 pm

[43] I hope the consensus isn't that that was Beltran's fault

49 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:10 pm

[38] Ah, didn't know you weren't already watching it. Give it another 3 seasons ... and then watch it on DVD!

50 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:11 pm

Kruk: Beltran's a hall of famer 'coz he's a switch-hitter.

got it. thanks, fuckwad.

51 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:11 pm

[40] Yup.

[47] And after my college days I need all I have.

Good inning.

52 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:11 pm

Red Sox radio guy is an idiot, been calling Beltran 'Beltre' all inning, saying he's been a 'good' player but maybe not 'great'. Don't they have a producer in his ear to 1. correct the name and 2. give him some stats? Beltran has been a GREAT player.

53 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:12 pm

[48] definitely jacoby's bad.

54 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:13 pm

Nice little boom-boom, but it does detract from the fact that Gardner is simply unable to steal bases.

55 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:13 pm

[52] Wait, really? Which radio guy? That doesn't sound like O'Brien.

56 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:13 pm

[52] Beltran is awesome. and, of course, since he's a switch-hitter, he'll garner hall of fame votes. so says the fat kruk.

57 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:14 pm

[50] Hey, gut Pesach. (Early, but tomorrow’s an off day.)

58 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:14 pm

nice catch.

59 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:15 pm

[55] Joe Castiglione I think. Also saying 'Ivan Novo'. Maybe a bit too much partying in NYC over the weekend. Still better than Krukie though, I can't take even an inning of that guy.

60 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:16 pm

[57] I'm already leaning toward the left.

It's probably bad that I'm planning on having pizza for dinner tomorrow night, after I teach...huh?

61 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:16 pm

[59] kruk truly is insufferable.

62 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:18 pm

RI, thelarmis, I was talking to this Japanese guy about how Jesus didn't look how he's portrayed in the West. No chance he was blonde & blue-eyed, in fact he was likely very dark. Possiby 'black' according to some scholars, depending on how you define the terms. My Japanese buddy thought for a second and then smiled, 'You mean, he was a black-Jew, like Sammy Davis Jr!'

63 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:18 pm

personally, i'm not a fan of any tattoo, but ... a neck tattoo? i just don't get that at all.

64 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:18 pm

[59] Oh, that makes more sense. Kind of a whiny voice.
He is kind of an idiot, but I like him.

[60] Nah, pizza isn't leavened. (I make my own rules about these things. Tradition? Yes... but on the other hand...)

65 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:20 pm

[62] A blond blue-eyed Jew, no way! Unless he was a drummer.

66 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:21 pm

i'm of the blonde hair and blue-eyed variety. and incredibly fair skin.

67 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:21 pm

Note to Ryan Roberts: you can't wash off a neck tattoo. "Oh, you already got one? Doh!"

68 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:22 pm

[65] HA! Ya beat me to it : )

69 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:23 pm

For fucks sake, what's wrong with these guys? He's a World Champion closer. It's no ooh-ay-hara. It's WAY-hara.

70 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:24 pm

Mr OK, a friend in China was just telling me about this word they have, Lǎowài 老外 . It literally means 'old foreigner', but as far as I understand it's basically a somewhat affectionate but somewhat condescending term for a white European (or Eur. extraction) visitor to China. When he asks his Chinese friends what it means, they say it means "foreigner friend", but my friend says it is never, ever used for a black person.

71 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:25 pm

[69] Geez, really? *Everybody* in RSN says "ooey-hara". (They love him, by the way.)

72 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:26 pm

[62] Othello, the Moor, is usually portrayed as "black" though he probably was an Arab.

73 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:26 pm

This is what I was [29] talking about. Farrell knows. This could be real trouble for Doubront.

74 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:28 pm

Dammit, oh no double dammit!

75 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:28 pm

Remember when Frankie was hitting like .650 with RISP?

76 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:28 pm

[70] That's interesting. In Japanese the catch-all term is 外人 = 'gaijin', 'outside person'. More formerely is 外国人 'gaikokujin' 'outside country person'. Tends to apply to anyone and everyone from outside Japan, regardless of country or race. All foreigners are the same to some here :)

77 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:29 pm

Yay, replay!

Let's hope Frankie Brains isn't hurt, he's been on the DL all too often these last couple of years.

78 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:30 pm

He's out-- for how long?

79 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:30 pm

Two on and nobody out; two pitches later, inning over.

80 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:30 pm

tie goes to the runner.

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:30 pm

[72] I always picture him as looking like Omar Sharif.

82 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:31 pm

Brains is definitely hurt.

83 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:31 pm

they got the call right!

romine will be back up with the big boys manana...

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:32 pm

Woohoo!

Still, rather it be an out and still have Frankie Brains.

85 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:32 pm

Frankie is snake-bit.

I'd trade that run in for him.

86 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:33 pm

Actually, I've been looking forward to Romine.
Not that I wish Frankie any ill.

87 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:34 pm

[81] I've seen NY Opera ads with the guy in black face.

Musical positions!

88 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:36 pm

[87] Not me, I want J.R.

89 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:36 pm

[70] They always say it's "affectionate". Lots of Japanese say that about "gaijin." Any term that collectively refers to people of diverse cultures (Spain vs. UK, for example) based on physical characteristics is discriminatory.

90 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:36 pm

brains is out.

tex is out.

jete is out.

'bama hamma is out.

brian roberts is out. (shocker!)

91 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:38 pm

aren't these guys professional athletes and trained to sprint 90-100 feet?

92 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:39 pm

[76] But, sadly, (unless you are a white American or British) we know there is a pecking order, and black and Asian foreigners are at the bottom of the totem pole.

93 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:40 pm

[76] My first Aikido sensei was blond haired, blue eyed, loves Japan, married a Japanese woman, spends time there, and hates it whenever he's in his wifes rural village and Gaijin show up. Even though he's been studying Daito-ryu for a while, yeah he's an outsider.

Purity has its pluses and minuses.

94 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:40 pm

[87] Olivier played Othello in almost-black-face.
Patrick Stewart also played the role, with an otherwise black cast. I didn't see it, but it sounds interesting.

95 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:43 pm

Ichi-san!

96 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:43 pm

Phew. Thought that one was gone.

97 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:43 pm

Ichiro had that from the get go. Not nearly as dramatic as he made it out to be

98 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:43 pm

Nova has given up a lot of hits, but I feel like he's throwing pretty well. Better earlier, but still pretty well.

99 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:44 pm

MAESTRO!!!

That's my dear friend Ed Alstrom playing the organ!!!

100 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:44 pm

Now run!

103 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:48 pm

[99] Very cool.
Is he nuts?

104 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:49 pm

Shorter John Kruk: I'm ignorant and proud of it.

105 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:50 pm

WHY CAN'T YOU BE THAT AGGRESSIVE STEALING, GRITNER?!!?!?!?!?

106 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:51 pm

[103] ed or brett?

brett is kinda nuts. he runs on that but won't steal a base...

107 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:51 pm

There's something very strange about Brett Gardner and his reluctance to steal bases, especially when he's willing to do something like that.

108 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:52 pm

[107] Rickey always said that a base-stealer has a certain mindset. That Rickey had but not every one had like Rickey. Cause Rickey was the best.

109 rbj   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:54 pm

[108] Direct quote from Rickey.

110 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:54 pm

[106] In my experience all organists are at least a little crazy.

111 coleman42   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:55 pm

Maybe he's got a Knoblauch-style hang up?

112 thelarmis   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:56 pm

[110] yeah, kinda like sackbut players.

113 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:58 pm

Girardi said before the game that Jeter is available "in an emergency". So Beltran playing first base isn't an emergency?

Soriano would make more sense, but of course they'd lose the DH.

114 RIYank   ~  Apr 13, 2014 8:59 pm

Bearded.

last night, he sat in with the allman's. i was on the side of the stage and trey was standing right next to me. but i didn't wanna bother him, so i didn't say anything. he played a little bit, then walked right past me. i was gonna introduce myself and say hi upon his return, but he didn't come back out that way...

[144] I don't understand Cashman sometimes. Why on earth sign Brian Roberts? Just keep a young utility infielder on the bench.

Nice win, boys!!!
