Went to the Mud Hens game yesterday afternoon, weird 5 pm start. Allegedly it was 50 F. but never felt that warm. Shivered the whole game.

Fun thing about baseball is that there's always a chance at a perfecto, or at least a no hitter, until they get that first hit. During the pregame it was announced that the scheduled starter was scratched (turned out that he'd been called up to Detroit) so it was going to be a shitty Johnny All-staff game, which never turn out well.

Starter hit a batter in the second, who was quickly erased on a caught stealing. But he made it through 5 without giving up anything else. Interesting, but I've seen that before. Next guy goes 2 retiring all six, meanwhile the Hens had put up a 5 spot. Hmmm. Still damn cold but I wasn't going to move because baseball superstition. Third pitcher comes in, hits a batter (same guy who got hit earlier) and issues a walk. But then 3 straight outs without giving up a run. So goose eggs through 8 (except for 3 Charlotte errors.) Closer comes in for the 9th. One out. Two out. Third out. 4 pitcher no hitter. Now, I've watched Boomer's & Cone's perfectos, as well as the Astro's 6 pitcher no hitter against the Yankees, but those were on tv. This was the first one I got to see and have the ticket as a souvenir. By the way, it was still damn cold.

13 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 12:52 pm

14 seamus   ~  Apr 24, 2016 12:53 pm

I seriously can't watch this.

15 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 12:59 pm

Jeez, I go to let the dogs out and there's another run?

16 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 12:59 pm

nice play, tex.

17 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:04 pm

hey, look at that - we went down weakly in order. shocking.

18 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:05 pm

Tigers just took Shane Green out. Hmm.

19 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:18 pm

Aw Jeebus, can't catch a break.

21 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:22 pm

Yay, a double for Alex!

22 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:31 pm

And that run is promptly given back.

23 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:31 pm

24 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:39 pm

Michael Kay cannot judge fly balls.

25 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 1:40 pm

loud out. almost made it somewhat of a game...

26 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:01 pm

Hmm, pinch hitter for Alex.

27 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:17 pm

[26] huh. 'coz he sucks or maybe hurt his leg running out the double...?

28 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:17 pm

or, maybe just to get ackley at-bats...

29 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:34 pm

At least I'm getting some chores done.

30 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:41 pm

alex is out with an oblique injury. it's bad enough he's going for an MRI. prolly won't see him for awhile...

31 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:47 pm

Ah, now it's play-out-of-position day.

32 MSM35   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:48 pm

Alex going on the DL is a break for the club and for him. He really looks overmatched against lefties. That is supposed to be his strength. Time to turn the page.

33 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:49 pm

dickerson's a dick with how he hits braves (and former braves) catchers in the head with his backswing. there's definite backstory there, though not with mac specifically. in any case, i hope mac's ok and wonder if DICKerson gets drilled right now...

my guess is no. if it were another team, yes...

34 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:51 pm

friggin' walked him...

and mac is at first. damn!

try a pickoff and HARD tag on the helmet : )

35 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:54 pm

mac looking like tex at first!

36 thelarmis   ~  Apr 24, 2016 2:59 pm

mac wears the golden sombrero.

37 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 3:03 pm

Blech

38 MSM35   ~  Apr 24, 2016 3:06 pm

Playing three days in a row and against lefties is very unusual in both respects.

39 seamus   ~  Apr 24, 2016 3:35 pm

Well, looks like turning that game off was a blessing. An A-Rod injury might be a blessing for the team. Though I don't wish him hurt obviously. But we can't do much worse at DH than he has done thus far. It's rough having Headley slump along with Teix's predictable low average and A-rod's nearly complete futility.

40 rbj   ~  Apr 24, 2016 5:08 pm

DL Alex, DH Carlos and the defense gets better as well.

41 Boatzilla   ~  Apr 24, 2016 6:43 pm

[6] Great story! Even cold, it sounds better than watching the Bombers get bombed.
