"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Bronx Bombing (Duck Alert)

woman chinatown bags

I don’t remember who around here came up with the concept of “The Score Truck.” Was it Hank Waddles or Chyll Will? Or someone else. Man, I don’t recall but I know it was created because the Yanks were having trouble scoring runs.

These days, not so much. Feels like every game they win is a blowout.

Yesterday, it was over before it started. Though Chris Tillman retired the first two batters, Aaron Judge followed with a rope into the left field seats, the kind of home run Dave Winfield and Gary Sheffield used to hit (and the kind that lights up the Exit Velocity Meter these days). Before the inning was over, the Yanks scored 6 runs. And a long night ended with a lopsided, 16-3 final score.

Dag.

More this afternoon on a scorcher in the BX.

Never mind prosperity:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

July 11, 2009. The blog entry was by Emma Span, and the comment was by our man Hank.
I can't do it justice with an excerpt, so go read it here (comments 32 and 33).
The rest, as they say...

2 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:08 pm

[1] I thought Hank said it in one of his posts. The comments aren't included in th link. Can you justify giving us an excerpt?

3 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:14 pm

K'd the first batter!

4 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:17 pm

K'd the second batter! Both looking. But, with a 50-pitch limit today, going to 3-ball counts on every hitter is not going to allow him to last very long. Lotsa Domingo German coming up.

5 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:19 pm

1-2-3 foist!

6 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:27 pm

Bases clogged for Castro, one out. How about homering for the third day in a row?!

7 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:28 pm

I'll accept that single

8 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:28 pm

This offense is bananas.

9 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:29 pm

Beautiful 2-run single by Starlin! Line drive straight up the middle. Love it!

10 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:30 pm

And that homer

11 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:30 pm

WOW!!! Gary goes fucking BOOM!!!

5-zip, still just one out...

12 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:30 pm

Drinks on me! Hot damn!

13 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:32 pm

That homer by the Sanchize was just gorgeous

14 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:32 pm

450 feet, above and beyond the bullpen

15 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:33 pm

Ha! The Oakland Orioles ;)

16 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:34 pm

I love the look on Buck's face.

My brother is going to this game, but he's stuck waiting in line to get in! Missed five runs!

17 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:34 pm

College World Series has higher level of playing than the Orioles

18 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:37 pm

Huh? Of course the comments are in the link. It's just the page of that blog entry. Oh, you must be trying to read it on your phone or something?

Anyway, okay, here's an excerpt: (Hank is talking about Jeter having dropped a pop fly)

Say what you will about his fielding deficiencies, but this was so routine that the Angels announcer announced it as an out and the operator in the score truck changed the graphic from 1 Out to 2 Outs -- both before noticing that the ball was rolling at Jeter's feet.

Then in the next comment, he writes,

By the way, I just re-read my comment, and even I'm not sure what a "score truck" is.

19 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:39 pm

Another K for Green!

20 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:41 pm

Thanks, RI. Yeah, I'm on my phone coz there's a security issue with this website on my Firefox...

21 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:42 pm

Chad looks great. What is his pitch limit supposed to be today, have they said?

22 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:45 pm

I hope Chad makes it through 3 (scoreless) frames.

23 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:45 pm

Yeah, 50 pitches or so. Needs a quick 3rd...

24 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:46 pm

You were just in NOLA? How's the boy doing there?

25 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:47 pm

[18] Ha!

26 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:50 pm

Why'd be swing at that pitch?

27 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:51 pm

[24] Well, last month, yeah. He's great!
There was music everywhere, it was amazing. Went to the Zulu on the Bayou festival...

28 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:52 pm

Hicks walked anyway. Dude is an on-base machine.

Some kid name Judge is at bat.

29 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:52 pm

Nice. Music is the BEST!

30 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:55 pm

My friend Ed must be in a rockin mood today. He's already played in a gadda da vida and smoke on the water.

31 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:58 pm

Oh boy.
Thanks for the free runners!!!

I think they should IBB Starlin. Come on, he's so hot, do it Buck! Show us how smart you are!

32 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:58 pm

Walked the bases loaded.

Deja vu for Castro: bases loaded, one out. I'll accept another picture perfect base hit up the middle.

33 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 12:59 pm

Who's starter gets pulled first?

34 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:00 pm

Too anxious

35 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:00 pm

Did you guys see that some umps have a lot of trouble with Judge's strike zone? Because his knees are so high, they are calling low pitches as strikes. It's on Fangraphs, I think. Stanton has a similar problem but not quite as bad.

36 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:00 pm

Feh.

37 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:00 pm

Neither thelarmis nor I accepts that DP!

38 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:01 pm

Boo

39 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:02 pm

Thelarmis, I am channel-jumping over to the US vs Norway women's soccer during this game.

You would enjoy it, I am confident.

40 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:04 pm

Chad beginning to turn into a pumpkin?

41 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:04 pm

hi pals. just tuned in. Seems like you have to watch this team from the first pitch.

42 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:06 pm

[41] Always record.

43 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:08 pm

Well, this is no bueno. I hope we don't come to regret Castro last at-bat.

Green is out and I kinda am too. The wife wants to go do stuff. Guess we're going for lunch and hiking.

44 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:08 pm

Ooh, I'll have to check out the Norway footballers!

45 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:10 pm

Thanks Chad. Let's go Jason.

46 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:12 pm

Hmm, not liking this.

47 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:12 pm

We won't win this game with five runs.

48 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:13 pm

Toil and trouble.

49 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:13 pm

this is not good

50 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:16 pm

Yuck. Off to my graduation ceremony. Hold the fort. Go Yankees!

51 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:20 pm

Hmmm, interesting

52 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:20 pm

Buck is going to get tossed.

53 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:24 pm

Okay, good work Chasen.

54 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:24 pm

could have been worse. Let's get couple back.

55 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:39 pm

close. too close

56 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:44 pm

Nice play, Didi!

57 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:50 pm

Cash these runners in.

58 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:53 pm

Jones didn't even try on that hit.

59 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:53 pm

Extremely satisfying.

I ACCEPT THE TWO-RUN SINGLE.

60 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 1:59 pm

that's a bit more comfortable

61 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:11 pm

Maybe Adam can give us a couple more innings.

62 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:11 pm

This is going to be a long game just from the pitching changes.

63 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:19 pm

D'oh!

64 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:21 pm

nice hustle down the line

65 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:29 pm

I remember that no hitter.

66 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:30 pm

Wow, nice! Whew. Torreyes saves a double and probably a run.

67 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:39 pm

Dang. Whacked by Hicks, but run down.

68 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:41 pm

Ahhhhh.

Holy, holy crap.

69 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:41 pm

Wow!

70 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:42 pm

495

71 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:44 pm

double digits

72 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:44 pm

Double digits redux!

73 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:45 pm

Well, sure, Starlin, but, ya know, just a home run.

74 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:50 pm

Exit velo?

75 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:54 pm

[74] It was 119 mph. Only good enough for sixth place this year!.

Statcast pic

76 thelarmis   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:56 pm

Double Digits!!

77 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:58 pm

[76] Dude, you missed a Judge monster. I thought Kay might have wet his pants.

78 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 2:59 pm

Welcome to the bigs, kid

79 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:00 pm

Yay! First punchado!
Welcome, kid.

80 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:06 pm

I add my welcome as well.

O's announcer says first time yanks have scored 8 or more in this many consecutive games since 1956.

81 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:06 pm

Judge's SLG is over .700 now.

82 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:07 pm

[80] Yeah, Michael and Paulie have been all over that 1956 thing since the top of the game. Michael is particularly impressed.

83 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:14 pm

I accept the extra runs! I accept all completely unnecessary, piling on runs!

84 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:15 pm

Hicks!

85 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:17 pm

Oh, come on.
This is a very unrealistic game. It's just getting silly.

86 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:18 pm

MVP!

87 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:18 pm

2 tds. 2 for the Judge!

88 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:22 pm

Last September we all thought that Sanchez was the future. Judge and Sanchez together is unreal. Can we hope that Bird is the 3rd star?

89 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:25 pm

[88] I know. It's possible. I think Bird was considered the surest prospect of the three, wasn't he?

This would be the sickest line-up since...

But I'll take Severino as the Third Star.

Geez, it's really nice this season, when I say something like [47], I can legitimately think, "But we'll get more, no problem."

90 monkeypants   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:28 pm

Is there a more fun, more entertaining player in MLB right now than Aaron Judge?

[0] [1] Score Truck...awesome! Reminds me of the old days.

91 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:34 pm

Well, if he brings Monkeypants out of Yankee exile, that's pretty impressive.

92 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:34 pm

14-3? Holy shit. Bring on the angels!

93 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:36 pm

Yay!
I accept Ronald Torreyes as an official "Nice Little Player."

94 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:39 pm

Gary at first, again

95 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:40 pm

One and two down

96 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:46 pm

let's end this thing

97 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:47 pm

Okay, calm down kid. Just slam it in there, don't have to overthrow it...

98 RIYank   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:48 pm

Heh.
I ACCEPT THAT WEIRD ENDING.

99 rbj   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:48 pm

Well that was an interesting end

100 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 11, 2017 3:49 pm

in the books. take out the brooms!

Another shellacking AND a Score Truck drop?? This was a great thread to wake up to here. Onwards to Anaheim!
