"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Stretch Run

The Yanks start September banged-up as usual but also in first place as usual. Been a tremendous season so far considering all the mishaps. Let’s hope nothing gets too dramatic before the playoffs start.

Yanks have split the first two with the A’s, and look to take the series this afternoon on a beautiful autumnal day in the BX.

Never mind the wild card:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

Man this Kay-Flaherty team is killing. Without a doubt the worst YES team. Perhaps the worst team in the history of sports broadcasting.

Kay all bombast and hyperbole, but it's OK when he's tempered with Kenny, Paulie or Cone.

Flaherty is the odd and unpleasant combination of pompous and banal. And as boring as fuck. If his neighborhood had a block party, they'd chip in to buy his house, so they wouldn't have to invite him.

2 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 1, 2019 12:25 pm

[1] Sorry that should be "killing me" not "killing"

3 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2019 12:30 pm

[1] No lies told.
Flaherty + Kay + Happ + a's = perfect storm of suck.

4 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 1, 2019 12:37 pm

[3] Ha!(HA!pp?)

I'll only be around until Sanchez and Fraizer bat, as it's into the the wee hours out here.

5 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 1, 2019 12:55 pm

This broadcast is bullshit. They just totally ignored the ABs of Gardner and Frazier. Fraizer! His first AB in months after being banished to Scranton. WTF!

Sorry, Mussina was great back in the day but I don't give a fuck about him right now.

I'm done. Bring it home, guys.

6 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2019 2:13 pm

I'll step in for Boat.

So, right, Dull gives up a double and then walks a guy, but...
HE HAS A REALLY HIGH SPIN RATE.

Whew! I thought maybe he sucked!

7 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2019 2:16 pm

Sure, he loads the bases.
But, HIGH SPIN RATE. So, nothing to worry about.

8 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2019 2:20 pm

Well, 3-0.
But...
look at that freakin' spin rate!

9 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 2:24 pm

and I'm stuck with the TBS crew. Ron Darling or Flaherty, which is worse? discuss

btw. I really hate the As.

10 newbs   ~  Sep 1, 2019 2:27 pm

That third run is on Voit though.

11 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:02 pm

the streak of no shut outs continues. excellent base running by Judge.

12 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:07 pm

Didi does what Didi does!

13 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:11 pm

poor call on Voit

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:11 pm

Fucking ump.

15 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:20 pm

Darling:"some great pitching on both sides today, 12 walks though." what brilliant analysis.

16 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:22 pm

sure would like another walk off.

17 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:24 pm

Atta boy, Brett! Kaboooooom!

18 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:24 pm

Love me some Gardi. Tie score!

20 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:28 pm

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:28 pm

Awesome. Fucking awesome!!!

22 rbj   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:32 pm

And no homers for the Twinkies today, only 11 behind them now.

23 RIYank   ~  Sep 1, 2019 3:48 pm

That was amazing.

24 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 1, 2019 9:29 pm

[9] Darling is the WORST.

The 9th inning HRs actually woke me up. I had left my phone on low. Then I crashed again.

This team is F-U-N!

25 rob_smith_51   ~  Sep 2, 2019 12:04 am

I can't stand listening to Yankee radio announcers, but living in Chicago area, I don't really have to. Hawk and Wimpy were awful in Chicago, worst all time IMHO. The latest team is much better with Steve Stone and Jason Benetti.

26 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 2, 2019 1:29 pm

Game today or not? rain situation?

27 rbj   ~  Sep 2, 2019 2:42 pm

3:55 first pitch.

28 rbj   ~  Sep 2, 2019 5:12 pm

Not a fan of this getting shutout.

29 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 2, 2019 5:26 pm

I hate texas.

30 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 2, 2019 5:29 pm

Frazier is going to homer to try and balance out his suspect defense.

31 rbj   ~  Sep 2, 2019 6:03 pm

Dammit, streak over.

32 yankintexas   ~  Sep 2, 2019 7:31 pm

Well if we can't get a run off Minor there's probably no chance we'll get a run in a series against the 'Stros. That team is going to run rough shot against everyone. I just hope if that happens that Cashman thick head will finally be penatrated with the idea that it's pitching that wins championships, not amassing a bunch 20 homer guys.

33 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 3, 2019 7:22 pm

Just tuned in and 8-0 lead! Missed all the taters..nice comeback from being shut out.

34 rbj   ~  Sep 3, 2019 7:33 pm

Nice to come back to some offense

35 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 3, 2019 7:58 pm

Gary is scary.

This offense, when they're on, is enough to win, with Pax, Tanaka & German grooving.

I know this is sacrilege, but we don't need a rusty Stanton or Hicks. There's no way those guys have enough time to prepare themselves to face Verlannder & Co., or even a plus MLB reliever.

36 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2019 8:52 pm

[35] Yeah, that's probably right.
But, we could use Severino, if he can get healthy and tuned up.

37 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 4, 2019 12:06 am

Oh Mets..my goodness..
And incredibly, their minor league affiliate did the same thing on the same night!

38 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:27 am

[37] Mr. Met is turning over in his...wait up, he'd not dead.

Well, unfortunately the Mets are. Finding new ways to lose every night.

39 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 4, 2019 4:24 pm

Really nice to see my Nat's do the dirty to the Mets. Too bad the Mets came back and won today.

40 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 4, 2019 4:27 pm

Think Gary has a chance for the single season record for a catcher? Think it's 42

41 rbj   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:21 pm

If only Gary hadn’t lost a month to the DL.

42 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:38 pm

Judge Hr was a pop fly

43 RIYank   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:41 pm

I got excited when Judge was batting and Kay and Flaherty started yammering about Lance Lynn's spin rate.
Sure enough...

44 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:46 pm

Evening gents!

Long time no see!

2-0 ... excellent.

45 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:49 pm

John ... "good looking" and "Joe West" do not EVER belong in the same sentence.

46 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:53 pm

Joe West is an embarrassing example of out of shape guys running mlb. Hockey, NBA, NFL refs all seem to be in good shape.

47 RIYank   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:55 pm

Hey!
Gleyber Day weekend extended!

48 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:55 pm

Still Gleyber Day!

Gleyber Day!

50 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 4, 2019 6:56 pm

Gleyber is an amazing young talent. Hot damn. Thanks, theo.

51 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:03 pm

[50] flags fly forever is what Cubs fans mumble when anyone brings up the trade. They're right (especially since it had been since 1906) but boy am I happy about that trade ...

52 mhoward120   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:04 pm

Really digging those homer-in-how-many-ballparks stats.

53 rob_smith_51   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:05 pm

Interesting that the Yankees have 13 players with at least 10 homers. Maybin has 8.

Twins have 8 players with at least 20 homers. Next man has 15.

54 RIYank   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:06 pm

Seems like you'd try really hard not to walk Gardner.

55 RIYank   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:09 pm

Hmph.

56 rbj   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:21 pm

I get the remnants of the hurricane tomorrow and Friday. Might make it to Boston over the weekend.

57 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 4, 2019 7:48 pm

[51] Wonder though, Cubs were stacked that year. Maybe they still win it without Chapman? He DID almost blow Game 7 after all..

58 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 4, 2019 8:02 pm

like i said, that's what they tell themselves to cushion the loss of torres

59 rbj   ~  Sep 4, 2019 8:03 pm

Nothing you can do about that hit.

60 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 4, 2019 8:46 pm

Flahrety just admitted he doesn't read. Another reason to hate him.

I hope we get a a decent team for the Bosox series. This pairing is boring AF.

Although having Chaz Palminteri in the booth was cool.

61 rbj   ~  Sep 4, 2019 8:47 pm

64 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:53 am

Hey, is Alex going to put up an "Oh, it's you again" post? Last chance!

David Price has been scratched for the series. Hasn't this happened before, maybe more than once?
The Sox are carrying 21 pitchers on their roster, so they won't have trouble putting together a Bullpen Game. Or two, I guess. Those are going to be some long-ass games.

65 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:23 am

[64] Yup. I’ll see if I can get some root canal work done instead. Sawx are out of it so they are in audition mode.

Can’t wait for the new rules next year.

66 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:18 pm

Chacin has been released by the Brewers so of course he strikes out the side.

67 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:36 pm

Okay, be honest. Which Banterer thought, "Shaping up to be a pitchers' dual"?

68 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:42 pm

Not me.

69 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:44 pm

Someone will get a hit by 8:30.

70 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:50 pm

Hmmmmm.

71 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 6:51 pm

Cora must be thinking, "Why didn't I try this 'bunch of scrap heap relief pitchers' strategy in April?"

72 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:06 pm

Not even close.

73 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:07 pm

I think Gary is a net defensive plus this year. Including his arm, I mean.

74 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:16 pm

A hit! A baserunner!

75 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:25 pm

Told ya. Before 8:30.

76 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:25 pm

A run will score before 9:30.

77 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:38 pm

Hmph. Sooner than I had hoped.

78 mhoward120   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:40 pm

I think it’s amazing that going for the best record is almost as exciting as a good old-fashioned pennant race.

79 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:40 pm

Argh.

80 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:41 pm

[76] next time, specify the Yankees.

81 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:50 pm

I did not want to spend my first Friday night in back to school week watching the good guya lose to this shit add team. Yay, Brett!

82 RIYank   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:50 pm

Well, on the board anyway.

83 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 7:51 pm

84 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 6, 2019 8:01 pm

Holy spelling fail.,,"good guys lose to this shit ass team." At least Cone is in the house.

85 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 6, 2019 8:09 pm

Well that escalated quickly. Bad things happen with walks, getting behind, and throwing fucking frisbee meatballs.

86 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 6, 2019 8:16 pm

Judge is going to be out. Even though he's safe.

87 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2019 8:34 pm

Yup.

88 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 6, 2019 8:38 pm

91 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 6, 2019 9:09 pm

Kay didn't say, "Do they have a rally in their bones." I guess the answer is obvious.

92 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 6, 2019 9:23 pm

We can still take the series. Let's get 'em tomorrow. Go Bombers.

93 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Sep 7, 2019 3:37 pm

115 mhoward120   ~  Sep 8, 2019 3:40 pm

Astros have 21 runs already. Guess they’re too good for baseball, so they must be playing football.

116 RIYank   ~  Sep 8, 2019 4:54 pm

[115] Yeah, if the M's scored *any* number besides 1 (which is what they actually scored), it would have been a much more likely football than baseball score.

117 rbj   ~  Sep 8, 2019 6:09 pm

Speaking of football the Giants are in mid season suckitude.

118 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 8, 2019 7:16 pm

Topics covered included: Mrs. Dooley (who?), some nun teaching young Suzyn to keep score, Man Of La Mancha, analytics being well intention-ed,the scout who discovered Fred Lynn. I know it's a special 'booth exchange' thing but still, they wonder why young people don't dig baseball when the conversation seems old to even ME and I'm 45..

Tauchman injury really sucks. I would rather see Big Red out there than Stanton. Both have suspect defense but I think Frazier would actually hit more and he has some speed too.

Gotta get Severino out there to toss some innings. In the 5 game series, it worries me that we haven't got better starters.

Glad to see Big Maple showing he is an ace lately and Happ even had a wonderful start for a change. We gotta get German feeling better on the road or have him start at Yankee stadium.

Awesome that the Yanks pushed Sox over the edge yesterday.

Lets go Yang-Keys!!!!

Awful loss last night. These wins and losses count the same in the end to get home field advantage. If you are going to use the whole bullpen minus Aroldis, you might as well play to win.

Still tied for best record, but last night was there to be grabbed. Can't Britton go another inning or a few more batters?

242 rbj   ~  Sep 11, 2019 5:46 pm

Rained out.

243 RIYank   ~  Sep 11, 2019 7:44 pm

Dammit. That's not good. We might never play this game... and we need games against the Tigers to stay ahead of the Twins for the HR record!

Okay, frivolous. Sorry.

244 Greg G   ~  Sep 12, 2019 9:57 am

Look at Sonny Gray this year. Almost had a no-hitter and has pitched to a 2.80 ERA and has a 1.05 whip.

I know the change of scenery was good for him and maybe he has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove himself. Some folks just aren't ready for the big lights of NY but maybe they DID try to make him pitch in a way that made him uncomfortable?

Lance Lynn is another guy we could have re-signed.

I love CC, but I was against this extension from the get go. You can't be sentimental here. I know he is a competitor but his knee is just not working anymore. Do we want him on the mound in a must win game and have someone bunt on him? I know the Yanks are short of arms but one of the reasons why was signing CC. They could have given that money to someone else.

245 rbj   ~  Sep 12, 2019 1:07 pm

263 rbj   ~  Sep 12, 2019 7:20 pm

Something with Happ’s bicep. It was known about and he’s tried pitching through it.

264 rbj   ~  Sep 12, 2019 7:27 pm

Sweep!

265 Greg G   ~  Sep 13, 2019 11:53 am

Man, Sanchez has a groin problem again. Someone better find the voodoo dolls that keep getting pins stuck in them.

Happ isn't serious and supposedly they are at least not sounding like Encarnacion's injury is that bad, but whenever I hear oblique, it usually means 8 weeks or more. I hear Edwin doesn't feel it when he swings.

Now let's beat up on Toronto and maintain home field.
