The team apparently spending a little win-loss capital to refresh and deal with injuries and then take on their biggest competitors to continue the long slog to the mid-season break. Let’s hope they can manage to stay on top and not stumble over more of their own hubris until then.
No, Alex, it was not. I even agree with Steven A that the apology to Mrs. Robinson was appropriate and probably heart-felt, but that all is not hunky dory (does anybody still use that phrase? - I mean other that Sterling) between Donaldson and Anderson.
Meanwhile, another masterpiece last night for NN. Reminds me a bit of Hadeki.
I've got some thoughts about Donaldson. I was irritated the moment the trade went down. I will always prefer to root for the guys who come up through the system (Sánchez) over the ones who come over as free agents or on the other end of a trade. In my mind there's nothing better than a prospect who makes good, even if they're someone else's prospect originally, like Gleyber.
My problem with Donaldson is that I spent six or eight years rooting against him. He wasn't just a good player who hurt the Yankees (I've supported lots of other trades and signings), but he always struck me as a jerk. You never heard anything good about him, and it never seemed like he was respected by other players.
Basically, I want to feel good about the team I'm rooting for. I don't see it as a rotisserie team where I just want the best stats available at each position. I understand why some people wanted the Yankees to sign Carlos Correa, for example, because he's a great player, but it would've made me physically ill to watch him standing where Jeter once stood. Call me sentimental, but it seems like when you get older you either get sentimental or cranky; I much prefer sentimental.
So I can't actively root for Donaldson, and the spat with Anderson tells me that I was right about him. I don't think he's a racist, I just think he's a jerk who isn't smart enough to understand how people might respond to his words.
On another note, I like the picture for this post. Is that the Score Truck?
Actually, Action Environmental Group did this, I'm guessing it's a continuation from an initiative started in 2016 to bring awareness to childhood cancer; apparently it's expanded to other cities as well. I was thinking about the Score Truck since we haven't seen one in a post for a while and this just popped up; it fit nicely with the underlying gist, so I had to put it up.
Hank, 100% with you in that.
(5) Chyll, that’s an interesting group, thanks for the link.
You guys see the Yankees Official Twitter feed & The Rays too yesterday? Really amazing. Also you may want to look up what Gabe Kepler (Giants manager) wrote. Baseball is an old-fashioned/conservative world so seeing these small but noticeable changes is very surprising and welcome.
Boone will be asked after the game and I’m certain he’ll say something noncommittal, but there’s no way in hell anyone but Clay Holmes is gonna pitch a high-leverage ninth inning for this team. He looks like a Whiffleball pitcher right now. Unhittable. Absolutely unhittable.
Clay was absolute garbage for the Pirates. A negative 6 WAR over 3.5 years. Cash and company must have a good eye, as they saw something that nobody else did. What a steal we got! Cashman has done this more than once.
rbj (or anyone else who might be reading this), can you explain to me why Carpenter is leading off? Is this some new cutting-edge strategy -- you put the guy with .850 slugging and a .188 BA in the lead-off slot???
So we've got a rain delay in the ninth inning of a 6-1 game with the nightcap of the doubleheader still to be played. As one of our old friends used to say, "It's not what you want."
[58] Howdy RIYank, been awhile! Hoping to catch more games this summer and visit the Banter too. Not seen our drummer pal here this year at all though..
Hahahah, Michael Kay trying but just terribly butchered Japanese. It's not 'ike-men' which means 'hot guy', it's pronounced 'ee-kay-men'. Can't expect him to have known that but was still funny :)
Not sure who this guy is, but the story of this game is not a rookie player struggling. It’s Cole working on a perfect game. He just went to 3-0, and this guy talked all through it as if he had no idea. This whole Apple+ experiment is embarrassing.
Hi all! I haven’t posted or even checked in since last post-season. A bunch of medical issues over winter had me in the dumps.
Maybe it’s a hangover from the past decade but are they really this good? I sure hope so.
Huh, I hadn't realized that Michael King was a RIYank!
(I have John and Suzyn on, and Suzyn mentioned that he went to the same high school as Rocco Baldelli.)
I watched the Mattingly doc on MLB today and it was beyond fantastic, but these last two plays evoke memories of losing a no hitter by the score of 4-0 at old Comiskey in the dark days.
[152] I have it on my MLB app as an out of town subscriber. Not sure how local NY folks can find it but I’d highly suggest you search options if possible.
I was born in 77 so my most formative years were Donnie’s (Rickey/Dave) then the dynasty bolted on during college.
Not a stellar week for Mr. Donaldson, eh?
No, Alex, it was not. I even agree with Steven A that the apology to Mrs. Robinson was appropriate and probably heart-felt, but that all is not hunky dory (does anybody still use that phrase? - I mean other that Sterling) between Donaldson and Anderson.

Time to beat the Rays
[3] It might as well be, the way this team is trashing the competition >;)

Rats.
Homers are good
Time to walk the terrorists.
[3] I'm with you brother.

[11] Yeah, those pitches just have dizzying break to them. He's amazing.
[3] Agreed. Well said.
HEY... OUR FAVORITE TEAM blew a 6 run lead in the 7th against Baltimore. Final is 12-8 O's.
What a waste of a good outing by Cole.
Someone should tell Kay and Flaherty what airmailing a throw means. Total diss of Gallo.
How about some runs today
Gleyber doing his part
Rats, Sunday dinner, feeding the terrorists and then walking them didn’t work.
RISP failure
So what genius gave the Yankees off days for Memorial Day and Fourth of July?
TBS game.
Weak sauce, Gleyber. Cadillac a few different times in same non-homer and then over slide 3rd. Oi!
Doubles, triples, stolen bases? I don’t recognize this team.
Phew, a home run. That’s better.
Ready to score some more!
Let's bust this motherfucker wide open!
Judge has really cooled off of late.
Every time there’s a bad bunt I hear Scooter ranting.
Falafel with the leather!
Wow! Put a star on that one. Sweet play. Especially to get the speedy Trout.
Amazing! lol....
This is a really anti-semitic evening by the Yankees.
Come on, double digits!
But seriously, I feel sorry for Rosenberg.
God, Joey Gallo really isn't good at baseball anymore.
Gg.
Boo, rain delay
Rainout
Good base running!
Dang, missed a Judge homer, had to walk the terrorists
Homer party
rbj (or anyone else who might be reading this), can you explain to me why Carpenter is leading off? Is this some new cutting-edge strategy -- you put the guy with .850 slugging and a .188 BA in the lead-off slot???
I have no idea.
Shutout gone
[43] Maybe it is the Ruben Sierra strategy? He killed this type of pitcher 10 years ago.
I'm having flashbacks to last year's ridiculous loss to the Angels on the 4th of July...
Phew
Just call the game.
This is a problem -- they have to play another one soon!
So we've got a rain delay in the ninth inning of a 6-1 game with the nightcap of the doubleheader still to be played. As one of our old friends used to say, "It's not what you want."
Tarp is off.
One down
Two down
And three
[51] That old friend may not be long for Philly it seems as they are playing terribly..
Ohtani was off today? Stupid day game, I'll be in an out of Game 2 as the NBA Finals start, 1000 local time here..
Double steal
[56] Yeah he was waaaaay off. Got off easy, to be honest.
Beltran is growing on me as an announcer, makes some good technical points about batting.
If you swing at a 3-0 pitch, make it count.
Grrrrr.
Two innings in a row, get two guys on with nobody out, can't plate a run.
Sigh.
Uh oh, thunder rumbles. The terrorists hate thunder.
[65] Had some early season fireworks nearby here last night and my dauchs was not pleased..must be so loud for our dog friends..
No fireworks here, maybe the HOA banned them, which would be a good thing.
Okay, we have to stop getting two men on.
That thing yesterday, with like nine solo homers, that worked better.
And by 'yesterday' I of course mean this afternoon.
Shut up MLBN announcers. Far too early.
Big love to Cone for referencing Ralph Breaks the Internet. My daughter and I love that movie. The Glitch! Lol....
IKF! Could be crucial..can Taillon do it??
Good guys need a score truck delivery first.
[73] Desperately.
(That IKF play made my heart stop. Man, that was amazing.)
I wasn't aware of situation until 10 minutes ago and the game has been on tv since it started. Yikes.
Yeesh, runs please.
ARGH!
Boo!
Fucking Bollocks. All for naught in any gd event if the Yanks don't Fucking score.
Oh well.
Damnit..oh well, it's Steph Curry time. He has 6 threes in the 1st Q already..
It's nice that Andujar looks like a competent LF this year. Last year....not so much.
Redeem your season, Hix. FFS!
Okay I would really like to see a PH here. Gallo is our worst hitter.
They should just release Gallo. He's a negative in every phase of the game.
Yeeeessssssss!!!!!
At least he’s in line for the win now
Huzzah. Let the good times roll.
Phewwww! A win!
The-he-he-he YANKEES WIN!
Fun game!
Wow. That was a nail-biter.
Good game.
Glad they didn't waste the near perfect game (at least the first 7 innings)
Apple+ game. Who’s the crew, might be Cameron, but who’s the chick? Meredith?
20 for Judge.
No way that's Meredith.
She's fairly knowledgeable, but I don't like the broadcast. Too... slick?
But I do like this "many solo homers" strategy. That worked great yesterday, let's do it again.
Ok, it’s Hannah from ESPN.
Apparently this crew is:
Melanie Newman, Chris Young, Hannah Keyser, and Brooke Fletcher.
Oh that was cool.
And it's not a home run!
[98] Thanks
Well that was a fun inning!
It must be rough to be a Tiger fan.
Okay maybe it doesn't all have to be solo homers.
Double digits!!!
Really a shame Carpenter had to give in and snag that bunt single. It would’ve been nice to see a guy hit only home runs.
I hope people will get off Cashman and give him some credit for putting together this team.
Double digits!
[104] He still has a fairly stunning Iso Power number: I think it's .632. (I had to calculate it myself and I'm not completely confident.)
Not sure who this guy is, but the story of this game is not a rookie player struggling. It’s Cole working on a perfect game. He just went to 3-0, and this guy talked all through it as if he had no idea. This whole Apple+ experiment is embarrassing.
I mean, I know this just happened last night, but setting down the first 18 batters is kind of a big deal.
Awwwww.
Fun while it lasted. Maybe tomorrow.
I like how the starters are pushing each other to go deep in the game. And be stingy with base runners.
Anyone else having audio issues? My video is two or three seconds behind.
21!
This is just terrible pitching from Severino.
He's only pitched four innings, and the Tigers already have a hit!
I'm not used to this.
Uh oh, something wrong with Sevy?
Ok, phew.
Solo homers seem to be a thing
Yeah still a thing.
Man. Keep missing all these pitching gems. Went by the old little League fields to catch up with a friend. Great memories
: )
That was ruled a hit. JFC!
Darn, I wanted a run this inning but I don't see how it's possible. No way we're getting a solo homer now.
Okay I guess there's that.
Hey, a sac fly
Ballgame!
What a waste of Clay H.
I hope we don't need him tomorrow.
Weird 11:30 am start tomorrow.
And only on Peacock?
Javier Baez. Hm. He of the .520 OPS.
Well, probably we'll get some solo homers later.
Wait, there's been a mistake. Home runs are only worth *one*.
What the hell is Peacock?
Every time I turn around the MLB Premium package gets smaller....after I already paid.
Miggy can still hit.
It must be tough to be a Tiger fan.
Okay, let's wrap this up now.
Excellent. Nothing I enjoy more than PLAYS in extra innings, by the other team. Well, okay, maybe poorly executed plays, maybe those are my favorites.
Lovely.
I ACCEPT THAT RAGGED WIN.
Hi all! I haven’t posted or even checked in since last post-season. A bunch of medical issues over winter had me in the dumps.
Maybe it’s a hangover from the past decade but are they really this good? I sure hope so.
[137] Hope you are doing better. And yeah, this team is reminding me of 1998.
That’s a good start.
I hope the Yankees bring you out of those dumps, Bobby!
Yeah, I like the idea of getting a rookie Twin to pitch Home Run Derby practice for Judge and Stanton.
331... then 345 feet. Nice healthy competition.
Gary sporting the facial hair.
Huh, I hadn't realized that Michael King was a RIYank!
(I have John and Suzyn on, and Suzyn mentioned that he went to the same high school as Rocco Baldelli.)
Darn.
Well, got one.
This is a very sloppy game.
Oh yeah Chris Archer, I remember.
Is that the Mets “thumbs down” guy in the front row behind the plate?
Also, any talk of Howard Bryant’s book on Rickey Henderson here yet?
Released (and purchased) yesterday and plan to tackle after a library book or two.
Le sigh
Driving up Nestor’s pitch count.
Claw it back, run by run is fine.
I watched the Mattingly doc on MLB today and it was beyond fantastic, but these last two plays evoke memories of losing a no hitter by the score of 4-0 at old Comiskey in the dark days.
Where can I find that Mattingly doc that you speak of?
Ok, winning streak had to end at sometime, start a new one tomorrow.
[152] I have it on my MLB app as an out of town subscriber. Not sure how local NY folks can find it but I’d highly suggest you search options if possible.
I was born in 77 so my most formative years were Donnie’s (Rickey/Dave) then the dynasty bolted on during college.
Put it on a tee, Cole. Yikes.
Jesus Fucking Christ!
[147] Did not know about that. Sounds good. I will have to wait for the paperback.
On the bright side, lots of baseball to go and it's not out of hand.
What in the name of Joey Gallo?
I'm back to JFC.
Lost my feed for a while and, well, JFC.
Tuned out at 3-0. Now 6-3. JFC, indeed.
FFS, get Cole outta there!
Ha!
Bombers are not going softly into the night.
Huzzah! Hix crushed that one.
I would totally PH for Gallo before I ran for Stanton.
Gallo giveth and Gallo taketh away. That's two RISP opps he's failed in since his HRs.
