"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Testing 1, 2

The bubble has yet to burst. The Yanks keep rolling. Sure, it can’t last forever, but it sure has been fun so far, huh?

Next couple of weeks will be an interesting challenge: Rays (twice), Jays, and a four-game set against the Astros.

Tasty.

It can't keep up this way forever, but these wins will fatten the bank.

How many times has September been about scraping and sweating for the wild card and lamenting those dumb, avoidable losses that had gotten away in the spring?

Keeping their foot on the gas will be a challenge, but it's a nicer problem to have than needing to find the pedal in the first place.

2 Hank Waddles   ~  Jun 13, 2022 2:45 pm

I've been thinking this exact thing. It doesn't make that much sense to get overly excited about beating bottom feeders in June, but every win they get today is win they won't need in September. Plus it's a lot of fun.

3 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Jun 13, 2022 3:13 pm

[Mildly contradicts self] That said, recall how the 1998 team stumbled toward the end of the regular season and may have been guilty, in retrospect, of a little complacency.

(September 1998 brought a 16-11 record with two three-game losing streaks, which felt like a slide in the context of that season.)

4 RIYank   ~  Jun 13, 2022 6:00 pm

Heh, 16-11 is .593. If that's our percentage in our worst month this year... I guess I could live with it!

This scattergram confirms what we know from the games we've been watching:

I mean, currently we're on pace to win five more than '98 squad so at this point even a collapse gets us 100, 105 wins.

(That said, yes, I'm still hoping for more like 110-115!)

6 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 5:55 pm

I want 20 wins plus 11 more in the postseason.

7 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 5:55 pm

Er, 120 wins

8 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 6:09 pm

I was living in Colorado in 1998 so the only Yankees games I saw were the playoffs. I am super excited to be able to watch most of this season. Other than the GD peacock games. And hey, Cole! Don't shit the bed tonight. Go Yankees!

9 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:05 pm

Ah, good Cole early on.

10 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:12 pm

Yeesh. It's hard to mess up catching a pop up that badly.

11 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:18 pm

Falafel!

12 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:18 pm

Dear Michael Kay.
THAT is an air mailed throw.

13 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:35 pm

Phew

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:52 pm

Complete failure. Know who has the fucking ball from the pitcher. Ugh.
Waste of a challenge, too. Dumb. No way! lol...

15 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:54 pm

Ha! Out

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:58 pm

They overturned that call..?
[8] I had just arrived in Japan in late '97 so the '98 season was my first living abroad. No smart phones of course and checking email twice a week at an 'internet cafe' (remember those?!) There was a 30-minutes long MLB recap program on local TV I used to watch at 11pm every night, good way of learning Japanese baseball terms.

The playoffs were shown live on one of the channels, so caught the games. Was strange at first with morning baseball but now it's become the norm.

17 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 7:59 pm

I like it! 6-4-3!

18 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 14, 2022 8:03 pm

Yup! My girlfriend now wife used to get super mad at me because we would often go days or a week without talking to each other. I was too busy working in a restaurant, skiing, and playing poker late at night and she was in Grad school in Albany. Coordinating phone calls was a challenge! lol....

19 RIYank   ~  Jun 14, 2022 8:21 pm

Why didn't Wandy get to face this guy? I don't get it.
I know King is better, but cripes.
Well, it worked out I guess.

Some insurance please?

21 RIYank   ~  Jun 14, 2022 8:33 pm

Yeesh. Flukey game.

22 rbj   ~  Jun 14, 2022 9:15 pm

Not an easy win, but I’ll take it.

23 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 14, 2022 11:06 pm

Hey, Team! Back from a lovely evening at the Stadium.

That final out by Judge. Man, that was incredible.

24 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 3:09 pm

[23] Hm, that sounds like fun. I'm a little too far, but I'm gonna try to catch a game this summer.

25 rbj   ~  Jun 15, 2022 6:28 pm

25!

26 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 6:31 pm

[23] Hey weeping, I've never been to YSIII, what is the vibe like in person? Do they still have those crazy strict entry rules though with no backpacks allowed?
[25] He's on his way to 60!

27 rbj   ~  Jun 15, 2022 6:46 pm

If Judge gets 62 that would be the legit record.

28 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 6:48 pm

[27] Can't agree with that..no idea what Maris and Mantle were taking pill-wise in 1961, and the quality of pitching then was nothing compared to what McGwire, Sosa and Bonds faced, roids or not. Also am sure those guys hit some homers off of heavily roided up relievers in the 2000s?

29 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:23 pm

I have decided that I would Accept a sac fly here.

30 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:26 pm

Darn.
That's what I hate about 'productive outs'. They're outs.

31 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:28 pm

東丘! And I was just about to write that he really shouldn't be batting in the majors..

32 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:28 pm

Oh man that is satisfying. After the IBB.

33 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:30 pm

I mean, more satisfying for Higgy than for me, but still pretty satisfying for me!

34 rbj   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:30 pm

Higgy!

35 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:38 pm

Darn it.
Well, at least Nestor had a little breathing room.

36 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:46 pm

This is a little like a little league game. "No he didn't tag me!" And also Phillips dropping the fly ball, and Nestor botching the throw back from the catcher.

37 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:48 pm

Whew.

38 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:49 pm

Good job, Wandy.
I just hope he gets to pitch another inning, so he can face Yandy.

39 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 7:51 pm

[38] Bing! :)

40 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:03 pm

Dammit! He's too good. By retiring all five batters he faced, he avoids pitching to Yandy. (Probably.)

41 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:05 pm

Hey it would be cool if In the All Star Game Wandy got to play with Yandy and Xander!
Except that none of them is good enough to play in the All Star Game. But besides that it would be cool.

42 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:07 pm

[41] Don't forget Randy Arozarena!

43 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:07 pm

Josh Donaldson..I still don't see the point, and that's not about the 'extra' things, just him as a player. Rather have Gio and Gary, they would have been so fun on this team

44 RIYank   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:23 pm

Lol. Michael Kay paging through the rule book.

45 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 15, 2022 8:23 pm

Riveting action here as the umps discuss obscure rule book regulations..Yawn..

Chappy, we miss you not at all.

57 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 16, 2022 2:31 am

We must admit that this team is a LOT of fun to watch now. To me, they haven't even hit their stride yet. And there's this thing of beauty... https://www.espn.com/mlb/beanecount ... a real forecaster of a quality team. (OH shit! Last week they were a 4)

58 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jun 16, 2022 12:14 pm

Heard a really disturbing rumor today. The Mets will offer free agent Judge more money that God. They don't give a damn about luxury taxes.

59 rbj   ~  Jun 16, 2022 6:10 pm

Ah, Schmidt starting.

60 RIYank   ~  Jun 16, 2022 6:55 pm

Oh yeah, Severino got Covid. And apparently he feels like crap too.

68 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:36 pm

69 RIYank   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:47 pm

Goddam.

70 RIYank   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:48 pm

This is some freaking team, I dunno. It's just different this year.

71 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:48 pm

I approve.

72 rbj   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:50 pm

Yay, Rizzo!

73 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 16, 2022 8:51 pm

Rizzo sure sounds calm after a gw homer. Hot damn!

74 knuckles   ~  Jun 17, 2022 7:27 pm

Boy they sure are winning them all ways this year huh?

This Jays pitcher Stripling looks just like Al Leiter.

75 rbj   ~  Jun 17, 2022 7:59 pm

Pouring it on.

76 RIYank   ~  Jun 17, 2022 8:03 pm

First couple three innings this was looking like one of those frustrating games where the Yanks squander opportunities and the opposition squeaks out a couple of runs...
But that just doesn't happen this year. That's more of a 2021 thing.

Three straight pitches crushed -- homer, homer, double.
And then you look, and the only batter who has really impressive OPS numbers is Judge. I mean, Stanton is very good, obviously, and Rizzo is very good, but they aren't dazzling at all. And yet we just pound the living crap out of everybody.

77 RIYank   ~  Jun 17, 2022 8:06 pm

Double digits.

78 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 17, 2022 8:15 pm

10-1!? Holy shite! Fuck the blue jays.

79 rbj   ~  Jun 17, 2022 8:29 pm

I approve of run support for Gumby.

80 knuckles   ~  Jun 17, 2022 9:48 pm

Unreal output tonight. Dare I say Gallo’s mustache might be working, Samson-style?

81 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 18, 2022 3:24 pm

Hix cleared the bases with 2 outs! Holy shite!

82 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2022 3:28 pm

Yeah that was soooooooo satisfying.
Even for me! I can't even imagine how it felt for Hix. I really like the guy, I hope this gets him a start out of his horrible slump.

I'm not sure there's anything in baseball I like better, aesthetically, than a down-the-line 3 rbi double. Yumyumyum.

83 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 18, 2022 5:15 pm

Amazing! Go Yankees! Play today. Win today. Das it!

84 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 18, 2022 5:15 pm

Win win... winwinwin.
All we do is win.
I'm getting so tired of it...

85 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2022 5:25 pm

[85] The Yankees are relying too much on winning. I'd feel better if they learned how to bounce back from losses, which surely they will have to do in the playoffs.

The Jays are now 8 1/2 games ahead of the Orioles, and 12 games behind the Yankees. Hm. Okay maybe the winning-all-the-time thing could work. I'll have to rethink this.

86 rbj   ~  Jun 18, 2022 5:30 pm

Another well pitched game with a timely RISP hit? I like this year’s NYYankees model.

87 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 18, 2022 5:42 pm

Remember when Boone was awful during the first month? He's really improved as well! ; )

Atta boy, Gley!

91 Hank Waddles   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:19 pm

I'm gonna need someone here to tell me why I shouldn't have such negative thoughts about Josh Donaldson. Let's just talk about today. He gets hit by a pitch and then throws a tantrum, then he -- with Kikuchi clearly struggling in the first inning -- he gets himself picked off first base WITH A RUNNER ON SECOND. He's bringing nothing to this team but angst.

92 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:23 pm

[91] In fairness he's playing a mean hot corner but if you're otherwise looking for someone to talk you down, keep looking; I got nothing.

93 Hank Waddles   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:33 pm

I can't even be happy when he hits a home run.

94 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:38 pm

[93] laughing

That's ok. Should we go on to win this game you can be happy about the W in general.

95 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:39 pm

How come the revenge homer isn't redemption? [92] [94]

It's really a True Outcomes day. No singles, doubles, or triples for either team -- not even reached-on-error -- but lots of base runners and homers! And strikeouts.

96 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2022 1:55 pm

Why do we have Marwin Gonzalez exactly? There’s no RailRider who could do this?

97 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2022 2:10 pm

Scooter smiles. “That’s how you bunt!”

98 rbj   ~  Jun 19, 2022 2:15 pm

Gleyber day

99 RIYank   ~  Jun 19, 2022 2:17 pm

[98] That really was nice. Not even a shift-beater, just the good old-fashioned kind.

I was worried that this submariner stiff was gonna weasel out! But no, he got Gleybed!

[125] Of for sure, the numbers make sense. I just find 'three true outcome' baseball to be coma-inducing..

8th inning and done or go for it with about 125+ pitches. Yikes.

138 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:16 pm

[137] Always a risk..want the personal glory but what about the long season?

139 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:16 pm

[138] Yeah interesting. My hunch is Boone let's him go for it.
Particularly interesting because the 8th will be the bottom of the Rays' order, with truly abysmal batting averages. Whereas then the ninth would be the good hitters.

140 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:17 pm

Heh, Michael and Cam wondering the same.

141 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:18 pm

143 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:22 pm

[141] It's just, I randomly happened to be in NYC and watching the Johan Santana no-no for the Mets, thinking at the time 'boy he's really throwing a lot of pitches'..which some say really impacted the shortening of his career..of course Cole hasn't had the health issues Santana had, but still..

144 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:28 pm

149 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:34 pm

So, I'm not that impressed by no hitters. I mean, of course I am, they're impressive and all, but for me a no hitter is closer to a shutout in terms of my enthusiasm than it is to a perfect game.

So I'd not fuck around just for the chance at a no-no, because it's not that big a deal for me.

That said, I just went to look up perfect games (23 in history) and here's what's fascinating to me:

2009-present: 6 (3 in 2021 alone!)

1968-1981: 2 (1 in 1968, 1 in 1981--that's 12 seasons between them).

Is that a product of (AL) pitchers having to adjust to the DH? Or what? How do we account for that crazy discrepancy?

[145] Hi, Sam! :)

151 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:36 pm

Holmes is ridiculous.

152 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:38 pm

I hate the fucking rays.

153 rbj   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:42 pm

Ok, now take Cole out.

154 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:42 pm

[152] I heartily endorse this statement.

155 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:43 pm

MOTHERFUCKER!

156 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:44 pm

Now I'm sad.

There goes the streak.

:(

157 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:47 pm

Weak-ass hits. Even the real single off Cole was just a hard ground ball.
Damn.

158 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:56 pm

[157] Just goes to show what can happen when you fail to strike out.

159 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:58 pm

Ok...PLEASE let's cash him in!

160 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 8:58 pm

Good, Josh. Don't get picked off, jackass.

161 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:02 pm

Well I'll be.
I hope Margot is okay.

162 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:03 pm

UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE!

163 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:03 pm

Well hell's bells. nice.

164 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:03 pm

Oh man, poor dude.

FUck.

165 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:07 pm

Hard to see what he did, actually. Margot I mean. How did that cause an injury to his quad or whatever it is?

166 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:08 pm

Bravo Trevy!!!!

167 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:08 pm

[165] I sure couldn't tell. I was thinking his knee?

168 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:12 pm

I can't believe it. Wandy has *again* avoided Yandy!!!

169 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:12 pm

That's one way to start the 9th.

170 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:13 pm

Goddam it. Walking fricken Brujan, that's ridiculous.
And now he can throw strikes, whew.

171 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:16 pm

Oh my god.
It was foul so not too close a call, but man.

172 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:18 pm

Unbelievable.
DJ so reliable, usually.

173 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:18 pm

Gleyber acting like he tweaked something.

174 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:20 pm

Wandy does not mess around. All pitchers should adopt his pace.

175 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:20 pm

Vamos!
Way to go, Wandy.
Okay one more.

176 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:23 pm

Holy nelly. That game was nuts.

177 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:23 pm

Whew.

178 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:23 pm

Magic Wandy

179 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:24 pm

YAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!

God.

What an emotionally exhausting game.

180 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:25 pm

My God am I wound up.

181 RIYank   ~  Jun 20, 2022 9:27 pm

Just in case you're wondering, though, I do ACCEPT that win!

182 rbj   ~  Jun 21, 2022 6:49 pm

Hmm, Nestor not so nasty tonight.

183 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 21, 2022 7:13 pm

This isn't nice to watch.

184 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 21, 2022 7:13 pm

Everything hit hard.

185 knuckles   ~  Jun 21, 2022 8:51 pm

Head scratching use of of the bench here in the ninth. Despite Gonzalez coming through.

186 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2022 6:38 pm

Maybe pitch around that dude next ab.

187 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2022 6:44 pm

I don't like this shit.

188 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2022 6:53 pm

This is fugly.

189 rbj   ~  Jun 22, 2022 7:33 pm

Hmm, the September swoon in June?

190 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:08 pm

Huzzah!

191 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:09 pm

Yes way, Jose!!!!

Wow. Can't predict baseball.

192 rbj   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:10 pm

Well this is interesting

193 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:11 pm

Could someone please explain to me why Trevino is not playing every single day. (aside from typical catcher rest days)

194 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:48 pm

Yowzah!
Great come-back win.

195 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:49 pm

Now, smoke those cheatin' Astros.

196 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2022 9:53 pm

I feel like that was the biggest win of the year.

I'm feeling ecstatic.

197 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 12:09 am

[196] Ha!

In Yankeeland, seems like every win is a "must win."

Must avoid as much playoff baseball as possible as long as Gallo and Hicks are in the line-up.

198 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 12:18 pm

[197] To be sure.

199 rbj   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:14 pm

Not a good start

200 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:17 pm

I mean, can you believe this shit?

Before the first out is even recorded?

Our starters have inexplicably suddenly decided en masse to make things interesting.

The Astros lost Springer and Correa and still playing great baseball..

202 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:25 pm

This is going to be a long game and a playoff intense series, live it! Too hot and humid here to do anything but watch baseball and drink iced barley tea anyways

203 rbj   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:27 pm

That’s better!

204 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:28 pm

YAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!

G!!!!

205 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:32 pm

Playoff baseball, I called it!

206 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:35 pm

All right, Taillon. You got your mulligan.

Now get at there and show these clowns who you are.

207 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:35 pm

[205] Coney: Is this a four-game series? Is this the first inning? Man, buckle up!

208 rbj   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:38 pm

Great catch, Gallo.

209 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:38 pm

Gallo does bring the D, I’ll give him that!

210 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:42 pm

Gallo is amazing out there.

Every day.

211 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:42 pm

Come on, Joey. This is your game. Hit it out.

212 rbj   ~  Jun 23, 2022 6:52 pm

Oy

213 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 8:13 pm

This is not going well.

That walk by Rizzo has to be one of the most exciting walks I've ever seen. Too bad they couldn't cash in.

Hopefully they tired out Valdez.

214 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 8:28 pm

Bombers, aside from G, seem to have warning track power today.

215 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 8:44 pm

I don't care how good Gallo's D is, he sucks, sucks, sucks. They can't win in October with him in the line-up.

216 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 8:50 pm

JAY-SUS FORKING CREEPS!
That's it.

217 rbj   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:13 pm

Oh, going to extra innings

218 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:14 pm

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!
That went to the sticks.

219 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:14 pm

I feel like I'm on crack cocaine!

This is incredible!

220 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:20 pm

This team has got ‘destiny’ vibes!!

221 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:23 pm

[220] Really and truly.

That was some vintage 1998 shit right there.

222 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:32 pm

Nice and easy, Aaron.

A nice little old single will do.

No need to get fancy.

223 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:33 pm

NINTH Walk-off..!!!!!!

224 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:34 pm

226 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:37 pm

Came home from date night with wife and get to see that inning. Holy shite! Go Yankees!

227 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:37 pm

Wow. That was magical.
I'm nearly in tears.

228 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:39 pm

[227] Hello, 1998!

229 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 23, 2022 9:52 pm

230 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 23, 2022 10:44 pm
