Look Sharp

Hey, is it baseball season yet? I try to watch the NFL, really I do, but I find it so dull. Boring, which sounds funny, coming from a baseball fan, right, but there you have it.

In the meantime, check out this piece in the Guardian on the late John Berger who recently passed away:

“The way I observe comes naturally to me as a curious person – I’m like la vigie – the lookout guy on a boat who does small jobs, maybe such as shovelling stuff into a boiler, but I’m no navigator – absolutely the opposite. I wander around the boat, find odd places – the masts, the gunwale – and then simply look out at the ocean. Being aware of travelling has nothing to do with being a navigator.”

Too Short

The Jays are the better team right now. Want to assign blame? Can’t be on the Yankee players or their manager. You could look to the front office but for now, that’s not going to make us feel much better. More righteous, maybe; better, probably not.

Ivan Nova was good last night but Marcus Stroman was even better. The Yankee bullpen, enervated, absorbed the big blow–a 3-run home run by our old pal, Russell Martin. Course he hit the home run off Andrew Bailey one pitch after Bailey thought he had Martin struck out. But Bailey didn’t get the call and then he missed his spot. Martin didn’t miss the pitch.

Final Scored: Jays 4, Yanks 0.

The home crowd was loud and they cheered and why shouldn’t they? Their team hasn’t made the playoffs since Christ was a Cowboy and the Yanks have been kicking the Blue Jays’ asses for years now.

That doesn’t mean we have to like it. A hard, unpleasant end to their season come October is chief on my wish list for these playoffs.

In the meantime, the Yanks limp home. But, they are still in the lead for the Wildcard game. The division looks out of reach but as we all know, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

Soul strut. Is there anything more attractive than watching a woman who knows how to walk moving her way through the city streets?

Emily and I had dinner plans downtown on Saturday night. Even though it was raining in the afternoon we trooped around SoHo and the Village for a few hours running errands. Man, it was dead out. Even in SoHo with plenty of people on the street, it was so quiet. People just weren’t ready to be out yet I guess. We walked through the streets, through Washington Square Park, and enjoyed ourselves and the subdued mood.

The train wasn’t crowded this morning, the day after Christmas. But that didn’t stop two women from yelling at each other in Spanish. They sat to my right and one of them must not have said “excuse me” or something when she sat down and boom, they was arguing.

Felt oddly comforting. Merry Christmas indeed.

Hard to Earn: Small Wonder

Man, the kid was good. Stands up tall on the mound, works quickly, has poise. Even when he got into trouble, he didn’t rattle. Shane Greene gave the Yanks exactly what they needed on Saturday afternoon as they beat the Orioles, 3-0.

Now, if only Chase Whitley can do likewise today.

Never mind the break:

Uptown Saturday Night

It’s Tanaka Time, again.

Only trouble is, Lester’s starting for the Sox. Maybe Sori or Port Jervis run into one…Maybe Beltran turns one around.

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Carlos Beltran DH
Alfonso Soriano RF
Brian McCann C
Brian Roberts 2B
Yangervis Solarte 3B

Never mind the tough southpaw:

Maybe the Mets and Yankees should trade ballparks. After whipping Yankee pitching but good on Monday and Tuesday the Mets were shutout for the past two nights in Queens. Last night, the Yanks won an improbable 1-0 game in which both starting pitchers made their big league debut. Chase Whitley didn’t get through the 5th inning but when he left with 2 outs in the 4th–with 2 men on base–he hadn’t allowed a run. Guy threw strikes, nothing overpowering, but he had a good changeup. Oh, and he got a base hit his first time at bat.

He was relieved by Dellin Betances who retired Eric Young on a ground out to Solarte at third base. In the dugout, Whitley was all smiles, as was his pal, David Phelps (which reminded me that I don’t recall ever having seen Phelps smile before).

Betances pitched 2 more innings and struck out 6 batters.

The Yanks scored their run when the Mets failed to complete a double play in the top of the 7th which left Brian McCann on first base with 2 out. Alfonso Soriano doubled to the gap in left-center and McCann scored. That was it. The Yanks had runners on second and third in the 8th with just one out but couldn’t get a run in. Adam Warren struck out 2 hitters in the 8th but also walked a batter and allowed a base hit. David Robertson relieved him, struck out David Wright, and then pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning to give the Yanks a series split.

Final Score: Yanks 1, Mets 0.

It should be noted that the Mets starter, Jacob deGrom, was mighty impressive. He has the easy cheese of a young AJ Burnett and is tall with longish hair sort of like Jered Wever. Anyhow, the Mets have an enviable stable of young pitching, man, and before long it could well be the Mets as the Kings of New York.
