Play it Again

Nope, it doesn’t get old. The Yanks are gorging themselves on the Rays and just about everyone else they face. And it sure feels good.

*

David Price pitched a wonderful game for the Rays, allowing a solo home run to Nick Swisher and an RBI single to Alex Rodriguez. Chad Gaudin was more efficient, allowing just one run (homer to Evan Longoria). Phil Hughes coughed up the 2-1 lead by giving up a solo shot to JasonĀ BartlettĀ in the eighth but Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth and then Swisher planted a line drive into the first row of the right field bleachers in the bottom of the inning. Cue Sinatra, AJ and his pie, with the hugging and mugging and jumping at home plate. It was Swisher’s 26th dinger of the season, just his fifth at home.

Final Score: Yanks 3, Rays 2.

Derek Jeter struck out three times and went 0-4 but got plenty of cheers regardless.

That makes 90 wins for the Yanks, and for the moment, life is good in the Bronx.

* Here’s where Steely Dan got the intro bit…

I love me some Horace Silver. I really love me some walk-off pie. Thank you, St. Nick, welcome to 40 games over .500. Gaudin's start = playin with house money. Unreal.

Meanwhile, am I the only one who doesnt care about Jeter passing The Iron Horse on the hit list? Is that sacrilege?

We play today. We Win Today. Dassit.

[1] Meanwhile, am I the only one who doesnt care about Jeter passing The Iron Horse on the hit list?

Jeter's been saying it without saying it, though no one believes him. I just want it to pass so he can get back to hitting everything in sight. I'm just tired of listening to Kay hype it and the "Jeter's not thinking about it" crap. Shut up and let em play.

[0] & [1] nice on the Horace. he is a pure gem. one of the best - and most important - American composers...EVER!!!

Song For My Father, is an absolute classic! i use it to teach Bossa Nova's to my students. my favorite Horace is "The Cape Verdean Blues" around the same time in the mid 60's, also on Blue Note. i've got 18 of his cd's on that label. there's at least one more double disc - combining 3 LP's from the 70's - i need to pick up...

jose veras, is being...jose veras. just gave up 3. texas leads 10-5 in the 9th!

5 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 8, 2009 11:27 pm

Yep, Veras strikes again! Now that's a show I'm am glad has left my tv screen.

Here's hoping that Marte can continue to pitch as effectively as he has been to this point.

I gave up on the Rangers when they lost all those games to Minnesota Toronto and Baltimore. Maybe they can put a scare into the Red Sox, but I just don't think they have it in them to overtake the Sox

8 thelarmis   ~  Sep 8, 2009 11:35 pm

[7] i understand. but don't give up hope entirely - it could happen...and it'd be really wonderful if it does! : )

9 monkeypants   ~  Sep 8, 2009 11:38 pm

[8] And the Yankees can help by punishing the Sox during their last series. I still think there's a pretty good chance that the Rangers take the WC..

10 thelarmis   ~  Sep 8, 2009 11:41 pm

texas sweeps their double dip and is only 2 behind boston. doable. not likey, but doable. i'll take that...for now.

Kaz & the King locked in another pitchers duel. hopefully King comes out on top again. he's down 2-1 in the 6th

[9] that'd rule and i'd be thrilled to no end. good discussion on Cokey in the last thread. thanks for the numericals! : )

[11] Any time!

Fuentes blows the save in Anaheim.

I was alone and lonely in the game thread just now..a pox on me for not seeing the new post..

Horace Silver! think I told thelarmis this one night when chatting, but I know the guy here in Tokyo who inspired the song "Too Much Sake" by Horace. he's a 76-yr old bar owner who used to hang with all the soldiers and jazz men in town, and he has a collection of soul-jazz albums going into the high 5000s...

Compliments on the game thread tonight ladies and gents, highly entertaining to go back and read!

Nice bit of musicology, Alex, but the Steely Dan song that cops that Silver riff is "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," not "Do It Again."

Nice win by the Yankees. Capped off a big day at the Corcoran household. Becky went back to work for the first time since Amelia was born (she's 15 weeks today). A bit of separation anxiety for both mom and baby, but ultimately a good day, and an important milestone.

[1] & [2] You are not alone . . .

[15] Good work, Papa! I remember when my lady went back after 6 months..she was dying to get out the apartment by then. Sometimes tough juggling our mutual work and baby care schedules but so far it's been good..

Nice catch on the Steely Dan too, I should have had that being a Bardian like Donald & Walter...

Angels win anyway

18 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 9, 2009 1:35 am

[17] Another wasted start from King Felix..so so sad...

19 thelarmis   ~  Sep 9, 2009 3:29 am

[15] i'm not a steely dan fan (i know, i know), but i did know that Alex's song references were off.

congrats on the family milestone! hope the car shopping was successful, too!

[17] ah, shit. i'm not surprised...

[14] well, i'm not positive about that story, actually. the title of the tune was given to Horace by the excellent Japanese drummer Hideo Shiraki. he was a constant companion of Horace's while the latter was in Tokyo. the band and Shiraki had gone out to dinner at a Sukiyaki restaurant and everyone was exhausted from the drinking later on and that's when the phrase came out. the album that the track leads - The Tokyo Blues - is Horace's favorite cover art. (he's flanked by two Japanese ladies)...

perhaps your friend owned the restaurant? or is he the drummer?!

20 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 9, 2009 5:24 am

[19] I will check that out with Misho-san, the bar owner..he swears he was part of the gang hanging out with Horace Silver, maybe he knew Shiraki-san? He was certainly not the drummer, he was in advertising for years before opening the bar in 1989..

PeteAbe has a good pic up on his site.

"This creature was spotted at Yankee Stadium tonight. It appears to be a hybrid of the Abominable Snowman and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man."

Can you guess what it is?

22 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 9, 2009 7:13 am

From Pete:
"Chad Gaudin has allowed four earned runs in 14 innings as a starter since joining the Yankees. The team is 3-0 in games he has started."

Brain Cashman... Boy Genius!

[1] I'm a huge Gehrig fan. If there's one Yankee that should pass Gehrig then it's Jeter. Gehrig and Jeter are both very classy.

24 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 9, 2009 10:36 am

I was at the game last night ... Jeter looked awful at the plate (though David Price made a LOT of guys look that way). The crowd was definitely trying to encourage Derek . . . not a boo to be heard after his Ks.
