Garcia is officially my least favorite Yankee starter. I don't enjoy watching him pitch.

2 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 12:36 pm

[1] Slop is not for everyone.

3 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 12:50 pm

Strikezone is kind of bizarre so far.

4 ms october   ~  Jun 22, 2011 12:58 pm

[1] [2] haha, yep.
i miss fartolo - i enjoyed his starts the most this year.

5 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:01 pm

Ouchie on Ramiro.
This is like watching a Mid-March game. aka spring training.

6 Marek   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:01 pm

C'mon Cervelli, lean into one. We've got to turn this lineup over!

7 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:04 pm

Reds announcer: "Here is their catcher, Cervelli. He's a .185 hitter, but..."

But?

8 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:04 pm

Oh, this is the game thread. I thought it was the "Let's play a couple".

9 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:05 pm

[7] ... he sure is cute!

10 ms october   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:06 pm

nice catch from swish.

11 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:06 pm

WOW. Great catch! Applasue form the homers, too.

12 ms october   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:07 pm

does mk really think all the yankee fans in chicago and cincy flew in from ny?

13 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:11 pm

My bold prediction is Freddie's streak of homerless innings pitched will end today.

14 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:11 pm

[12] I decided to give the Reds broadcast a chance...so far they are not too bad.

Meanwhile...I LOVE Freddy Garcia!!

15 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:14 pm

Ha!

16 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:15 pm

Gardy channeling his inner Melky.

17 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:16 pm

The ol' Melky trick into first base. : /

18 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:17 pm

Gardner with a Red Shift Special!

19 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:19 pm

I think this is very, very distracting for Leake. I hope it isn't distracting Curtis.

20 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:21 pm

[8] i thought so too, from the title.

i can only half-ass follow. got a plane to catch later...

21 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:22 pm

Awesome. That kind of AB is so satisfying when you're on the 'winning' end of it and so infuriating when you're on the other side.

22 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:23 pm

Leake at 52 pitches.

Reds just optioned Monday's starter and called up a long man. They might need him.

23 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:24 pm

[20] Cool, well, banter really hard right now to make up for it!

24 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:24 pm

Ump is calling a tight zone.

25 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:25 pm

One would be tempted to send Grandy.

26 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:26 pm

Veteran batter, young pitcher. The effect of a distracting base runner is supposed to be to our advantage here. Leake really does look like he can't concentrate, yet he's ahead in the count...

27 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:27 pm

Uh oh. Is he okay??

28 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:28 pm

He should have gone 3-6-3. Nice slide by Gardner.

29 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:28 pm

[27] Who?

30 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:29 pm

[29] Brett.

31 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:30 pm

Sweet.

32 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:30 pm

That was an extremely moral hit, don't you think?

33 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:30 pm

Yikes! That would have been a helluva play by Votto.

34 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:31 pm

[32] The entire inning has been highly virtuous, right down to the pitcher swinging th ebat for himself.

[30] He looked fine to me.

35 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:33 pm

score truckin'!

36 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:33 pm

Oh, Jorge...Strikeouts are the product of weak moral fiber. Why did you have to soil the inning?

37 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:35 pm

[34] He was getting some minor treatment in the dugout. I think Hanigan stepped on his ankle or something like that.

38 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:36 pm

Paul says when he was playin' no one had even heard of Twitter. That's an interesting way of putting it. Or puttin' it.

39 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:36 pm

[37] Yeah, Hanigan spiked him in the leg. He was hopping around a bit. And you could see the rip in his sock.

I guess he's all right, though. Taped him up and sent him back in.

40 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:40 pm

Slop works.

41 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:40 pm

The Chief.

42 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:42 pm

[39] is it you or rbj that lives in Ohio? i think it's rbj, but i'm not positive. i'm playing in Springfield, OH in a coupla weeks and was just curious...

43 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:43 pm

[42] I'm in upstate NY, not Ohio. But have a lot of friends in Ohio, and visit there pretty frequently.

44 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:45 pm

It would be awesome if Peña or Cervelli could get on base.

45 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:45 pm

... or if Bill Gates sent me an iPad.

46 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:46 pm

[44] Ever.

47 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:47 pm

Actually, that was a great AB by Peña.
Considering it's Peña, I mean.

48 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:48 pm

Cervelli Fail.

49 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:49 pm

Hmm.

Didn't someone ask the other day what exactly Frankie Cervelli is good at?

50 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:51 pm

[43] acha! i'm not hitting upstate NY on this tour. i have family in the Binghamton & Syracuse areas...

i'll have to try and remember to see if rbj is anywhere close to Springfield (wherever springfield is...).

51 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:53 pm

[49] Yes, we had a contest.

52 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:54 pm

Freddy!

53 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:54 pm

Damn, Fred.

54 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:54 pm

Chief!

55 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 1:55 pm

[50] I'm in the Hudson Valley, but I did visit the Syracuse area a couple of weeks ago. Caught a few games at Alliance Bank Stadium, and visited the beautiful parks out there - Green Lakes, Watkins Glen, etc.

56 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:00 pm

[55] nice! i'm going to be at Penn State all weekend (my alma mater). they have a fun minor league team - State College Spikes, NY-Penn League - and a great little stadium. unfortunately, they won't be playing this weekend. i get in too late tonight and then they're on the road. i was really hoping to catch a game...

i'm sure the new Braves AAA park is excellent. and it's not far from me, but i haven't been and don't have plans to go. then again, The Ted is really really close to me and i haven't been to a game since the Yanks were in town end of June, 2009. i was there when Brains homered! (about the last time he did anything good, haha...)

57 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:01 pm

leake is the young kid who started out really great last season w/out going to the minors, then got caught shoplifting this year and had a really terrible excuse about trying to return the clothes, or something - is that right?

58 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:02 pm

I figure Leake is done if a Red gets on this inning.

59 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:03 pm

[57] Yep.

Oy, that sucked. Jorge.

60 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:04 pm

E5. Hmmm. Teix would have caught it.

61 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:05 pm

[57] The booth explained his side earlier. It actually made sense to me and sounded like something I would do. Bought 5 shirts. Left the store. Realized they did not fit days later. When he went back to return them there was no one to be found. Left the 5 small shirts he bought and left with 5 bigger ones.
Could be bullshit. But it makes more sense than a dude making hundreds of thousands ripping off 5 stupid shirts.

62 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:10 pm

[57] They caught it all on camera, and he really did try to exchange the shirts without dealing with a clerk. Maybe it's arrogant - thinking he's above waiting like the rest of us - but it wasn't theft.

63 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:10 pm

For Fuck's sake Pena. Nice fucking throw! Bollocks!

64 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:11 pm

Huh, so, catching the ball: not what Cervelli is good at.

65 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:11 pm

um, this inning is not off to a good start.

[61] huh. okay, cool!

66 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:12 pm

holy crap. the young defenders cannot defend! : /

67 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:14 pm

[62] very cool. i liked the kid last year and was hoping it was more of a misunderstanding than a stoopid thing to do...

[58] you might wanna re-figure...

68 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:14 pm

[67] Yeah, I wasn't imagining 1&2 with nobody out!

69 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:15 pm

I wonder if he would have batted had they just thrown out the previous batter at first instead of going home.

70 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:16 pm

I like that shot of Russell Martin. I believe he was thinking, "My job is safe."

71 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:17 pm

Two unearned runs.

72 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:18 pm

shit sox spot the friars a run in the 1st. aw, how nice of them. now they'll win eleventy-four to 1.

73 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:20 pm

Quite the Leakey, Sloppy pitchers duel.

74 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:24 pm

That was an awesome inning. I love Frankie Cervelli AND Ramiro Peña.

75 ms october   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:24 pm

jorgie!!

76 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:25 pm

Atta boy, Jorgie!

77 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:25 pm

[70] Martin is probably thinking that, but then again, he has never before played for the Chessmaster™.

78 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:26 pm

Yikes, what a line drive---I thought that had too much topspin at first.

79 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:26 pm

That was good.

80 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:27 pm

hip-hip!!!

81 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:27 pm

Once we get past the euphoria, however, the sober reality sinks in that HRs are both immoral and rally killers. Thanks a lot, Jorge.

82 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:27 pm

[77] The Chessmaster is drooling over the possibilities with this afternoon's pinch hitters, by the way.

Hm. Do chessmasters drool?

83 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:28 pm

"Driven".

84 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:29 pm

[82] They only drool if they want you to see them drool. We are all putty in their hands.

85 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:30 pm

[83] I missed that. I'm listening to the Reds broadcast, which features a refreshing variety of phrases and, especially, the active voice.

86 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:33 pm

Great short hop by Cano. Word!

87 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:34 pm

Hot damn.
How many DPs can Brett get????

88 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:34 pm

So, so gritty.

89 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:35 pm

[84] Putty in a drooly guy's hands. That's not a good thing to be.

90 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:37 pm

[85] Jorge's homer was 'driven' -- fair enough. (Note the em dash.) Peña's loopy fly out was also 'driven'. That's the one I echoed. (Derisively.)

91 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:38 pm

Cervelli is very good at making sure no balls are harmed in his ab's.

92 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:40 pm

Cervelli is reaching that point where making outs has only a negligible impact on his numbers. He like a differential equation, or something.

93 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:40 pm

[91] I've lost track of what other entries there were in the contest, but that's surely going to make the Final Four.

94 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:42 pm

[92] Hm, I might have to go with 'something' on that one. However, if he would bat ninth, right next to Gardner, there could be a relativistic effect and Frankie's batting average could actually go up if he makes a highly virtuous out. Grounding to the left side of the infield with a runner on second, say.

95 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:43 pm

Ladies and gentlemen, Ramiro Peña.

96 randym77   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:44 pm

If I were the Reds, my strategy would be, "Hit it at Pena."

97 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:44 pm

What is Ramiro Peña good at?

98 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:44 pm

[95] Take that! : )

99 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:44 pm

Not bad, kid. Not bad.

100 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:45 pm

pena with the trifecta.

hat-trick, if you will...

102 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:45 pm

[97] Making Frankie Cervelli look good? And what is Frankie Cervelli good at?

Yes.

It's almost a paradox!

103 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:47 pm

[97] Helping Cervelli practice extremely hard to scoop one hoppers.

104 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:47 pm

[94] Hm, I might have to go with 'something' on that one.

So, it's not a case of the limit as batting average approaches zero (or, the limit as talent approaches zero, for that matter)?

105 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:48 pm

[90] em-dash noted.

109 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:52 pm

Kay needs to pay more attention to the outfielders. Maybe then he wouldn't sound like a jackass so often. Nah.

110 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:52 pm

[104] Looks like we might have to introduce some imaginary numbers here... Is Cervelli good at complicating stats with high end algebra?

111 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:55 pm

[104] Well, I see what you're driving at.
I see what is being driven at by you. (Trifecta! Michael Kay style 'driven', passive voice, stranded 'at'!)

[106] Your sympathy is overwhelming.

[107] Twisted!

[108] En dash noted!

112 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:56 pm

Just for the record, I would have sent Freddy back out. Because his pitch count is low, he's still fooling the Reds, and we could probably use D-Rob this evening.

113 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:56 pm

[109] That's something he's good at...

114 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 2:58 pm

[110] I recommend he change his uni-number to "e".

115 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:00 pm

[114] [110] Or 'i'. Cervelli doesn't strike me as the transcendental type.

116 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:01 pm

Love me some Cano. Teix had to be on his toes, too.

117 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:01 pm

What isn't Rob good at?

118 monkeypants   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:02 pm

[112] Yawn. You probably open with King's pawn to e4. You're not in the same league as the Chessmaster™.

119 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:02 pm

[111] Don't get all mushy on me now, we have to figure out if pi is an imaginary number or a tenant of existentialism ...

120 thelarmis   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:03 pm

[112] absolutely. i wanted the Chief for 1 more inning.

121 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:05 pm

122 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:05 pm

There's no pi for away games, ever.

125 Just Fair   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:11 pm

126 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:11 pm

Huh. Go figure.

146 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:24 pm

151 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:27 pm

[148] Oh all right, but you must go to bed immediately afterwards. Tomorrow is a school day.

152 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:27 pm

That play by Cano in the eighth or whenever, barehanded...Jesus, he's just spectacular out there.

153 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:28 pm

[150] There were innings of Great Virtue, and several instances of Unpardonable Vice.

154 RIYank   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:28 pm

Oh, and Jack Curry << Kim Jones.

155 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:28 pm

[146] I liked how your boy just blew the fastball right by that last batter. Fat pitch, right over the dish and he just swung right through it. That was ballsy.

156 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jun 22, 2011 3:30 pm

[151] Haha! It is a school day for me...another day of intensive German courses. Five hours a day, five days a week, das ist sehr ermüdend.

[157] Oh, you're taking classes! I didn't realize that. Studieren Sie die deutsche Sprache gut. (Hm, that doesn't look good, but I speak German like a four year old, so it's about par for the course.)

[154] [155] Yes, our pitching was gut. Uh, good. Freddy was superb. The two runs were (most definitely) unearned. (Which is also the bad part of the story, but we'll skip that.)

[158] Classes end in a week and then I can get down to work.
