"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

In the Boogie Down Boom Boom Room

Bartolo “Diego Rivera’ Colon is on the mound tonight as the Yanks start a three-game series against the A’s at the Stadium.

Alex Rodriguez was a late scratch with a sore thumb. All the same, our purpose remains:

Let’s Go Yank-ees!

[Note:  “The Watermelons” (1957) was Rivera’s final painting]

Uh.
The first inning was utterly silent?? Is that a Banter first?

2 RIYank   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:28 pm

Terrible umpiring. Bartolo threw four pitches in the strike zone, three of which were called balls, before grooving a HR pitch to Alan.

3 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:28 pm

Damn, then who's Freida; Freddy or A.J.?

4 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:29 pm

Wow. That went far.

5 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:33 pm

That wouldn't have been out of all parks ...

Name one!

Yellowstone?

6 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:41 pm

Man, what a bomb!

7 RIYank   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:44 pm

Same slot. Just above the knees, middle of the plate.

8 mhoward120   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:52 pm

Please do bette, Colon. Don't make AJ so damn happy.

9 RIYank   ~  Aug 23, 2011 7:52 pm

The Mysterious Moving Strike Zone.
Maybe equally terrible for both pitchers, but pretty awful.

10 RIYank   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:08 pm

Helpful GIDP.

The only reason I'm watching this dreary game is to see whether Bartolo is going to turn back into a pumpkin.

Which I guess would be merely a change in color, huh?

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:11 pm

GAHBAHFAH.

12 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:12 pm

Double play. Sigh

13 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:20 pm

Who IS this twatwaffle that's in the booth right now?

14 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:23 pm

[13] Dunno. YES or my9 producer?

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:26 pm

Cletus!

DRIVEN!!!

16 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:27 pm

jorgie ain't done, yet!

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:27 pm

Now let's pick this damn runner up, ok?!?!?!?!?

18 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:27 pm

Just a suggestion, but can we try and score Posada here?

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:33 pm

Alright, Mr. MVP, show us your BOOM STICK!

20 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:33 pm

vintage jeter. multi-hit game, walking.

c'mon Grandy, give us the lead!

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:34 pm

Damn, that was a fat breaker ...

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:35 pm

Eek, looked like #3 to me.

23 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:36 pm

How's Bartolo tonight?

Seems you guys had a little earth-quakin' excitement yesterday! Very rare in the east coast..

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:36 pm

Well, that one didn't, but see [22], he can't complain.

25 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:37 pm

I think this is going to be a frustrating loss. Colon hasn't pitched bad.

26 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:39 pm

[25] Not that bad, but certainly not to the level he pitched too before the injury (and the innings, take your pick).

27 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:40 pm

[23] Yup. 5.9 In Japan, or the US west coast it's also known as Tuesday.

28 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:41 pm

Huh. Hadn't heard that before. That's a pretty good damn story.

29 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:45 pm

[26] Certainly better than A.J.

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:45 pm

Here's the RAB preview of tonight's game. Turning out to be eerily prophetic:

Other than being a fine follow on Twitter, McCarthy has had a nice comeback year after dealing with injuries for several years. His 2.83 FIP is off the charts, though his ERA (3.74) is much more pedestrian. McCarthy is all about avoiding walks (1.30 uIBB/9) and getting ground balls (47.1%), and he’ll occasionally mix in strike three (5.87 K/9). He’s a big dude (6-foot-7, 200 lbs.) and he uses his size to get good downhill plane on his 90-ish mph fastballs (both two and four-seamer). A high-80′s slider is his third pitch (really second counting the fastballs as one entity). McCarthy’s a tough assignment, he might sneak up on the Yankees.

Blech.

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:48 pm

[29] That allows for a rather wide range of possibilities, not all of them positive ...

32 Just Fair   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:49 pm

It sucks sitting through on off day and then watching this. Bollocks! And for chrissakes, Arod!. Stay healthy.

33 mhoward120   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:50 pm

Clearly, one of those lifeless, listless games. Its ovah

34 Just Fair   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:52 pm

[33] 9 more outs, man!

35 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:53 pm

this is just one of those games for the Yankees...and one of those years for A-Rod

36 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:55 pm

[35] Good thing he's only signed for another 50 ...

37 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:56 pm

shit sox up big, early. what else is new...

there goes the 1st place lead...

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:58 pm

Yeah, not exactly inspiring tonite ...

39 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 8:58 pm

[36] But think of all the great memorabilia to go on sale when he hits 661,715, 756, 763!

40 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:01 pm

Well, that worked out, didn't it???

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:01 pm

Fugh.

42 Just Fair   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:01 pm

Good job, Joe. Boone just kills righthanders.
He could have brougt in The Hammer after the pinch hitter was announced, no?

43 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:01 pm

Well... we get our asses kicked by a shitty team. The good news from Lohud:
UPDATE 8:43: Word just came down that A-Rod’s X-rays were negative. He has a sprained thumb and is day to day.

44 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:02 pm

i know he's teh eighth inning guy, but prolly smarter to bring in the Alabama Hamma here to Houdini outta this and keep it at 3...

45 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:02 pm

uh, that was obvious...

46 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:02 pm

[42] No. I believe once a reliever is in, he must pitch to one batter. I think that's the rule.

47 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:03 pm

I know Burnett has sucked more demonstrably, but Colon has, well, blown nearly as bad in the last 5-6 starts.

There's a legit question of whether he needs to be moved back into the bullpen ...

48 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:03 pm

thing is with A-Rod, the last couple of years even when he wasn't healthy he was still good for 30 and 100+, which I know aren't the most telling stats in the world but are still nice to see. Maybe this year it all just kinda caught up with him?

49 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:04 pm

i was surprised The 'Tolo came out for the 7th...

50 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:04 pm

If I were Bartolo, I wouldn't be happy either.

51 mhoward120   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:05 pm

Is it just me or does it seem that Colon may have hit the final wall?

52 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:07 pm

[51] What does "the final wall" even mean?

Are you saying we should point off in the distance and tell him about the rabbits?

53 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:08 pm

[47] The only thing, for me, that says A.j. over Colon is being in shape to pitch a full season.

54 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:10 pm

Bah.

Just not our night.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:10 pm

[54] Like I said.

56 mhoward120   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:10 pm

(52) No George, but we all knew that Colon wasn't gonna make it thru a full season

57 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:15 pm

OT, anyone else read about Pat Summits? Best of luck to her.

58 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:16 pm

Texas only down 6-3.

C'mon Rangers!

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:17 pm

Meanwhile, I'm always happy to see Noesi get a chance to pitch, even *if* he's the last man out of Coffee Joe's bullpen ...

60 Just Fair   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:19 pm

[57] I just saw that 20 minutes ago. That is horrible news for anyone. Ugh.

61 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:19 pm

[57] yeah. it's sad.

[58] yup. shit sox score 2 apiece the first 3 innings. rangers just cut the deficit in half. i was hoping for more; they had the bases loaded w/ no one out and the heart of the order up. (hamilton, young, cruz)

still, i'll take 6-3 over 6-0.

c'mon Tex-ass!!!

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:20 pm

Ooops.

Woof.

63 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:21 pm

[61] Texas can mash it!
[57,60] Who is Pat Summit?

64 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:21 pm

[62] Perhaps I should have gone with: BLAMN!!!

65 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:21 pm

68 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:23 pm

Rally time! O.K. more like this is one of the 60 losses every team suffers (except for the 1998 Yankees.)

69 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:26 pm

[66] 59?? Ouch, that's young for such an illness.
[67] Tejas facing Lackey, they will score again!

i've got the braves game on here (on mute. i'm actually practicing marimba...) anyway, they're playing the cubbies. since the cubs are on wgn, nationally all the time, i've seen them play quite a lot over the years.

aramis ramirez is good at the baseball.

81 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:43 pm

[78] oh yeah! that means rickey henderson is 2 away and craig biggio is 5 after that. then...no one til next season. it's gonna be so much fun watching our Captain pass those names on the hit list. i can't wait!!!

82 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 9:43 pm

120 Marek   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:03 pm

OH C'MON he can't throw strikes and you swing at the first one???

121 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:04 pm

[119] Because he got a great pitch to hit ... and he drove it 400 feet???????

122 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:05 pm

Dang, can't complain about that. Nice ride by Swisher.

Today, Tex wears the goat suit.

123 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:05 pm

[120] WTF? Swish got what *we* wanted, he missed it by that much. Ain't NOTHING wrong with what he did there.

124 rbj   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:06 pm

Well, it was interesting at the end.

125 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:08 pm

[121] Gameday here, only see "in play: Out" before anything else.

126 Marek   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:08 pm

[123] Keep in mind I'm watching on Gameday and can't see the fly ball. So I'll add that I have to trust Swisher as a professional hitter to think he can do something with the pitch. Still, though... seems like a good place to try to work a walk given uncertainties with balls in play.

127 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:17 pm

Over to Arlington, J.Kackey trying to get his ERA under 6.00..yes, SIX! Go Go Tejas!

128 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:19 pm

Again. He drove the ball to warning track in the deepest part of the park. If he'd been just a split-second earlier in his swing, he'd have had a grandslam. He zoned a good pitch and gave it a very good swing. Some times, the results are just a fraction off.

129 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:20 pm

Too bad; with a win, the Yanks would have been 30 games over .500.

130 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:20 pm

[128] just saw the 'highlight' of it. swish did fine. gave it a good ride. thisclose...

i didn't see it, but the Tex at-bat pretty much sucked ass...

131 thelarmis   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:21 pm

[129] torre loved that benchmark!

well, we'll have to win the next 2 here and reach it...

132 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 23, 2011 10:35 pm

[131] This year, finishing 30 games over .500 will probably not be enough (96-66) to win the division. The Yankees will probably need to win 100 games to be in first. Which translates to winning two of every three games for the rest of the season.
