I'm trying to decide if I wanna keep score again tonight.

I'm home, so I'll be watching on TV. I think we'll go live instead of using the DVR to avoid commercials. Plus JJ is pumped, and I think we're gonna let him stay up till 9:30. Baseball through the eyes of my kids is amazing. He had me in the yard playing a mock game this afternoon. In his mind it wasn't Yanks v Tiggers. It was Yanks v Phillies. Sooptomistic!

2 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:14 pm

Is Joe afraid that Posada will come to the dugout with a giant 'We are the 99% placard" and chant "What do we want? Batting 7th. When do we want it? Now!" if he pencils in Montero at DH?

3 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:21 pm

Man, the waiting is brutal. Ah, the sweet, awful tension of the playoffs.

4 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:23 pm

Is Doc Ellis driving the score truck tonight? I definitely can't read that thing. I can make out an i-n-k possibly.

5 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:25 pm

[3] "sweet, awful tension"

Damn skippy!

I've been waiting for this since Game 4 ended. Finally done with work for the day, sort of, and off home - I should make it just in time for the first pitch.

6 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:26 pm

[1] You are KEEPING SCORE.

Didn't it work the other night?

Worried as heck, all sorts of nervous feeling on this one.

Game 5 hype up may be even more - Nova can have pitches go high with too much amp.

Also worried that it's more of an advantage to see him twice in a few days than Pfister - have a horrible scenario in my mind where the Tigers conscientiously lay off of anything Nova throws that dives down in the zone and wait for what is up higher.

Pfister throws so many alternatives that I don't think one days really predicts the next.

Advantage Tigers?

Anyone throwing a predictable or first pitch fastball to Young gets sent to Seattle.

Do people think the Tigers, despite what Leyland has said, might use Verlander tonight if the opportunity is there? Anyone with any insight into the home plate ump for tonight? Wish that didn't matter, but it does.

Please, let it be the Yanks tonight - don't want it to end here. More baseball, please...

7 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:34 pm

[2] Why are we complaining about Posada at DH? He's been very good, leading the team in batting average, on-base percentage and walks through the first four games.

8 randym77   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:34 pm

[2] Montero is listed as "day to day" at ESPN.

Um...what's wrong with him?

9 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:34 pm

[6] I can't imagine that Leyland isn't open to the possibility of using Verlander, but not all managers subscribe to the leave it all out there way of thinking in deciding games, or crucial games. Baseball, unlike other sorts is a tad unique in this regard. I can't count how many scrubs have started playoff games while bona fide starters on three days rest languished drinking Gatorade in the dugout. I of course will always wish that Brenly had been more like Torre.

10 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:35 pm

[7] Not complaining, but Montero is clearly swinging a hot bat.

11 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:36 pm

10) So is Posada.

12 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:37 pm

[8] Nothing. We are all day to day. ; )
He did foul one off his foot the other night, though.

13 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:38 pm

[4] It says "We Play Today We Win Today". Play to win or don't play at all, period.

I want a Granderson jersey now. No matter what he does from here on out, he is Da Man to me.

14 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:39 pm

[11] Don't get me wrong, Posada is as well, and I love seeing him out there for what could be his last few games as a Yankee. But I think Montero's numbers in September trump Posada. Most notably in the potential power department. That's all I am saying.

15 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:40 pm

[7] And base running blunders. I kid, I kid. Might be his final game.

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:42 pm

[14] Yes, but not in the OPS against RHP department, which is why Posada is starting.

Assuming Montero is healthy (and #8 is the 1st I've heard of anything), he'll pinch hit for Jorge if there's a LHP (Coke, Scherzer) on the mound.

17 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:43 pm

[6] Already got the scorecards filled out!

I just posted this as my facebook status, and I firmly believe it:

If the regular season is a 16.2 mile stable and roughly predictable marathon, then round one of the postseason is a .5 mile bi-polar, mood-swinging psycho-sprint!

LET'S GO YAN-KEES! (clap, clap, clap clap clap)

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:43 pm

Hmmm, supposedly Verlander threw a bullpen today.

57 pitches.

Guess we can rule that one out.

19 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:44 pm
20 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:44 pm

[15] When he almost got picked at second the other night, I about jumped out of my chair. Luckily it's been funny rather than costly during his career.

21 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:45 pm

[18] Leyland's cigarettes are apparently rotting his brain.

22 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:47 pm

Flealand already stated V wasn't available tonight.

23 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:48 pm

[19] That's just crap to fill a page with when everything else has been written to death. The game hasn't even started. How about Joe worries about how to get the "final outs" while the game is actually in progress?

"So, what do you think Smoltzy, Joe pulling Nova after the 4th having not given up a hit?"

24 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:49 pm

[22] It's just idiotic not to have him ready.

25 stormer   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:54 pm

I will be watching the game on DVR, as I don't get out of work until later that 8:00 EST here on the left coast.

Have fun guys! Keep the faith. Let's go Yankees!

26 edoubletrouble   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:57 pm

It's almost time!! Good luck New York! We are the 99%!

27 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:58 pm

Tim McCarver won't be announcing this post-season. I was so glad to hear that until they said it's because he has some "minor heart issues". Get well soon Timmah!

LET'S Go YAN-KEES!!

28 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:59 pm

TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-TIck-
ChiSox hire Ventura as manager. Methinks he'll be a bit less colorful than Ozzie.
GO YANKEES! Oi! Start the game already!

29 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 7:59 pm

[27] Replaced by Terry Francona in the ALCS!

30 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:00 pm

Well, here we go.

31 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:00 pm

I'm perfectly calm.

33 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:02 pm

32) Calmer than you.

LET"S GO!

43 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:08 pm

Good start.

44 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:09 pm

Nice. I thought the 1-2 was a strike but after seeing the replay I agree with the Ump, just off the plate.

45 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:09 pm

Fuck.

46 randym77   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:09 pm

Uh-oh.

Well this is not good.

55 randym77   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:10 pm

Nova a little nervous, maybe?

56 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:10 pm

57 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:11 pm

Lock it down, Rook. You'll be alright! Fuck Delmon Young!

58 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:11 pm

Two true outcomes.

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:12 pm

Well, that's a sub-fucking-optimal beginning.

Seriously, HOW THE FUCK DOES DELMON YOUNG HAVE 3 FUCKING HOMERUNS IN THIS SERIES?!?!?!?

60 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:12 pm

Hang in there, Ivan.

61 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:12 pm

62 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:12 pm

Cano. Patent it.

63 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:12 pm

Alright. Fuck it. 2 runs ain't winning this game anyhow.

64 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

Get 'em back.

65 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

Let's get those runs back right quick.

66 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

Okay, so we do need fielders after all.

67 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

A lot of true outcomes that inning.

68 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

Get one back now, keep it close!

69 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:13 pm

B, I'll be in and out; I'm at JFK waiting to pick up camera and crew returning from LA, so I'll be driving in a bit. I'll check in when it's feasible and especially when I'm done for the night. Now let's get those two runs back!

70 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:14 pm

2 runs is not gonna win this game. Plenty of time. Let's get the offense rolling. Gas up the truck.

71 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:15 pm

[67] see [58].

72 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:16 pm

[70] Blast!

73 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:16 pm

Fister really is a tall drink of water, isn't he? They should bash him tonight, two runs coming back quick!

74 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:16 pm

I leave for five minutes and everything goes to hell

75 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:17 pm

We got this, Team. I'm not worried.

83 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:20 pm

OK, I am not staying up all night for this, so things better improve right quick.

84 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:20 pm

[80] c'mon dude. seriously, we've got 24 more outs to work with here.

85 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:20 pm

[82] I'm with you. It may take a few innings, but we'll get these guys.

i really hate delmon young

87 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:23 pm

88 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:24 pm

Mo dammit. Finish this a-hole!

89 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:24 pm

95 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:26 pm

98 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:27 pm

Well done.

99 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:27 pm

[94] Gotta figure CC would take too long to get warm here. Better to get an actual reliever in, then worry about going to CC in an inning or so, when he's got time to warm fully.

100 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:27 pm

162 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:46 pm

[19] I actually laughed when I read in that article that the Yankees would only be looking for Nova to get through the Tigers' lineup one time. That's exactly what he faced... 9 batters in 2 innings.

163 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:46 pm

[155] No Ayala.
Phil for two, CC for two, then D-Rob and Mo combine for the last nine outs.

Sit down fucker! High Cheese!

165 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:47 pm

I'm trying to think of a worse way to lose the series than an AJ Burnett good starts and more "HUGHES TO THE PEN" ammo.

That has to be worst case scenario, right?

We need to win now

Fucking dick. That's the EXACT spot A-Rod was rung up on!

167 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:48 pm

Fuck.
But the variable strike zone thing pisses me off.

And I was so calm.

168 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:48 pm

I hope Delmon Young breaks his leg within the next 3 minutes.

Good work, Phil.

Good work.

172 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:50 pm

Now let's go, fucking offense!

173 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:50 pm

Huuuuuuuuughes!

Oh, did you see that pitch? I think Phil calls that his "FU MATTPAT" pitch.

174 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:50 pm

[163] Phil for 4 why not?

175 51cq24   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:51 pm

[165] i understand your point about hughes (though i've always thought they got it backwards and hughes should be a reliever, joba a starter), but what's the downside to a good burnett start? i don't see how it changes anything in the future.

176 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:51 pm

Oh fuck fuck oh fuck oh fuck

Was in the shower listening for the first two homers - argh.

I blame myself.

Is this a panic move?

How many innings you think Phil has in him?

Pfister is scary - can this lineup get locked in on him again?

177 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:52 pm

I once saw a Phil Hughes/Miguel Cabrera encounter that started 0-2, moved on to 3 awful waste pitches, and ended with a bomb.

That was no fun

178 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:52 pm

Why is everyone getting fucking jammed?

179 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:53 pm

[175] Now when AJ Burnett pitches like AJ Burnett for the next ywo years this game will be used as a crutch.

180 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:53 pm

Can we have some offense please?

182 51cq24   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:54 pm

[179] maybe, but i really doubt it. he didn't even get through the 6th inning. i see your point now though.

[190] Wha? Brett hit a slider.

192 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:56 pm

So this inning the announcers called Gardner the one consistent bat in the Yankees lineup during the series, but last inning they said Posada was the most consistent bat in the lineup.

193 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:56 pm

[189] The one play we do is a sac bunt. I don't expect that here

194 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:56 pm

2-1. RUN!

195 RIYank   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:56 pm

[192] Yes. Posada is the most consistent, but he he is not consistent. Therefore, Gardner is the one consistent one.

196 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 8:57 pm

[191] He seems to be getting a lot of called strikes on fastballs low.

Gardner doesn't run.

It would have been stupid for Brett to try to steal during Jeter's at bat. He had no read on Fister, and Fister has a good move.

Nice and easy now...

204 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:00 pm

[199] I'd like to see someone without a life chart Brett's steal attempts to see how often he runs before the fourth pitch.

I can't imagine its more than 5 percent of the time

Huh. Didn't see that coming.

This could work, though. I usually hate bullpen roulette, but it almost makes sense here.

260 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:13 pm

How can this possibly not mean Wade and Ayala???

And either one of them pitching in this game is so fucking unacceptable, that if they come into this game, Girardi should be fired before the game is over.

I ... I ... I might not be able to watch 9 innings of this Girardi bullshit.

266 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:13 pm

Seriously, if Wade or Ayala come into this game, he should be fired before the ball lands.

This is atrocious. This can't end well. This can't be good for the bats. This isn't good.

332 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:25 pm

Let's get Pujols and cut Tex

333 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:25 pm

CC could be like Moose in Game 7 back in 03!

334 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:25 pm

If gameday's accurate, Fister's getting squeezed quite a bit.

335 rob_smith_51   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:25 pm

CC, good move? I think so.

336 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:25 pm

[327][322] Thanks! I hate that moderation thing.
C'mon Tesh!!

337 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:26 pm

And that's why Randy Johnson was a mythical beast. He could pitch anytime, anywhere, like Travis Bickel.

Worthless.

339 Evil Empire   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:27 pm

Oh wunnerful

466 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:44 pm

Ha! I thought Darling was going to say, "Yeah, your offense has really sucked, what gives?"

Nova had whiplash. Who are they kidding?

471 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:45 pm

475 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:46 pm

477 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:48 pm

522 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:57 pm

My phone and my TV are each less than a year old and I'm gonna bill the Yankees if they force me to throw one through the other

523 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:57 pm

They got through to Fister in Game 1 in the 6th, right?

524 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:57 pm

[505]live by the hr, die by the hr

525 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

Unfuckingbelievable.

526 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

that's some weak sauce right there.

527 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

Or that. Really, Jeter.

528 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

of COURSE it's a stinkin 1st pitch out, goddam it

529 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

Top of the order, 3rd time around against Fister.

530 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

Hm..Leland is going into full defense mode.

531 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:58 pm

Jeter, why must you always swing at the first goddamn pitch.

Man, I think that Sausage Egg McMuffin I had for breakfast was a bad idea.

532 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Yeah it's very frustrating because Fister didn't pitch his way out of that jam in the fourth. That was pure Yankee fuckery. I'm looking at you, Russell "Fartin'" Martin.

533 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Making this cocksucker look better than he is.

534 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Jetes, setting the tone... *sigh*

535 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

The Yankees know this game counts, right? That it's not an exhibition?

536 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Seaon's over - baseball sucks anway

537 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

That's it, make him work. *FUCK*

538 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Wow, this team is absolutely feckless.

539 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

Yay, another out. Not looking good.

540 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 9:59 pm

I actually think a HR would be very nice right here. Wake the fuck up!

541 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:00 pm

If Robbie gets on, Alex is going deep.

542 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:00 pm

Et tu, Granderson?

543 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:00 pm

Rally Killer here, Robinson. Let's get some juice.

544 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

538) Feckless. Ron Darling: "Languid. OH yeah, baby! I'm down with the big word posse!

545 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

546 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

FUCK YEAH!

547 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

Thank you, Robbie.

That's one.

548 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

Hear that hum?

549 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

THERE WE GO!

550 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

Hmm.

551 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

552 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

Don'tcha know!!

553 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:01 pm

Now that's the kinda shit I like! 3-1 folks...gas up the mutha-scratchin' truck.

554 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:02 pm

Got one back

555 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:02 pm

557 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:02 pm

Thanks for fulfilling my request, Robbie

558 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:02 pm

Fuck. Hoped that was gonna hit the bag.

560 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:02 pm

le sigh

562 monkeypants   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

563 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

Ugh Robbie's styling is borderline .... You're THIS close to looking like a dick there Cano

564 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

Bloop & a blast next inning.

565 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

[545] Fister is pretty damn good. His numbers were tremendous all year, even when he was stuck in Seattle and couldn't buy a win.

566 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

Please tell me it's CC and not Wade. Please.

CC, So, Ro, Mo - whatever combination gets you to 9.

567 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

That ball was smoked and it was beautiful but a single last inning would have plated two.

568 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

No. More. Runs for the Tigers=Yanks victory.

569 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:03 pm

Yay, Robbie.

3-1 ... we got the run we just gave them back.

Yay!

570 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:04 pm

I wonder if it'll be CC or Wade. I've got no call on it. But think it'll be Wade.

571 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:04 pm

[565] I saw that from the first start he threw against us. He's no slouch. But the Yanks do seem to have the ability to chip away at him.

Now we need some blanks thrown at them and then for the love of it all, some more RUNS

572 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:04 pm

[565] And that has nothing to do with tonight, when he's left plenty of fat pitches over the plate, and the Yankees have done FUCK ALL with them.

This is on the bats.

573 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:05 pm

So what the hell do I know?

574 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:05 pm

[563] You can't stop smoooth. ; )

575 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:05 pm

Okay. Bottom of the order. Set em down and grab the bats!

576 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:05 pm

Way to get ahead. Now bury him, big guy.

577 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

[544] :)
He is a fellow Yalie, after all.

578 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

Wow, doesn't CC have a languid delivery? :)

579 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

1,2,3 Big Fella!

580 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

581 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

Fuck you, announcers!

582 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:06 pm

More CC?

583 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:07 pm

I have a funny feeling Big Tex and Swish are going to do something this inning

584 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:07 pm

Actually the thought of CC getting the win in relief of Nova is fairly appealing.

585 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:07 pm

"Forearm tightness" for Nova.

At this point, I'd actually hope that's bullshit, since that's often a precursor to a TJ ...

586 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:07 pm

[572] Agreed.

587 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:08 pm

2-2, set him down, man.

588 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:08 pm

gouda!

589 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:08 pm

590 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

Not awesome.

591 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

592 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

Good night, CC.

593 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

Wow.

594 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

Fucking Verducci. I think the cliche "deja vu all over again," which defies even the most twisted logic, should be a hanging offense.

595 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:09 pm

Girardi's crazy

596 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:10 pm

Does Nunez have a forkball?

597 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:10 pm

He's bringing in Soriano? I can't have much of a problem with that. Now please work.

603 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:11 pm

This is gut wrenching.

Oh, Sori. Mr. Levine is watching you...

605 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:12 pm

[577] You are too?

I know my expletive-laden gutter mouth is a tip off, in my case.

606 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:13 pm

How many pitches has Pfister thrown?

Just what we needed!

NOW, SCORE YOU BASTARDS.

618 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:15 pm

There was no reason to not bring in Montero there. If you're going to gamble with CC and crap like that, then you can gamble with your catcher. Martin is lost.

706 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

[664] Are they not playing in NYS next year?

707 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

Do ANY of these fuckng guys earn their salary???

708 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

7 baserunners stranded. 4 in scoring position. BULLSHIPS!

709 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

Russell's been death this game.

Shoulda pinch hit MONTERO

710 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

Guys, I think its over.

711 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:27 pm

Was it a swing or a hack?

712 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

Let's remember that Russell Martin hit .236. He's not a good hitter. It is what it is.

713 edoubletrouble   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

Okay Banter - what is the recipe for success here?

714 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

TBS, did I REALLY need the 2001G7 replay there? Fuck you

715 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

710) IT. Is. NOT!

716 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

We can win this thing. But, not like this.

717 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

711) Whatever it was, it was flaccid.

718 edoubletrouble   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:28 pm

ya gotta belieeeeeeve!

719 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:29 pm

713) Faith!

[715] Second that!

721 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:29 pm

[711] t'was a slow, bad golfswing.

722 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:29 pm

So Mo will pitch the 9th just like 2004 - a total fucking waste

723 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:30 pm

There we go. One gone.

724 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:30 pm

Is it me or are there a ton of dropped Ks this series?

725 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:30 pm

At least Girardi and Burnett will return next year

726 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:30 pm

9 outs, meat of the order coming up. They'll use Benoit..or will it be Albeekerkee?

727 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:30 pm

[713] hit HBP and a blast.

728 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:31 pm

729 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:31 pm

YEAH

730 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:31 pm

[713] Thinking middle of the field and not swinging themselves into the ground?

731 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:31 pm

Swisher and Kelly should go play badminton.

732 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:32 pm

Getting Scherzer out of there would be key. The other guys we can hit and in bunches.

733 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:32 pm

Where is that pitch you piece of shit?

734 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:32 pm

I feel so sick I can barely watch.

735 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:32 pm

The Yanks are going to need yet another opportunity. Fister gave them chances including a real peach in the fourth. It seems kind of unlikely they are going to get a similar chance again, but we'll see.

736 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:33 pm

I would love for the Yanks to get to that Valverde'. His antics cause bile to form.

737 edoubletrouble   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:33 pm

Act III, Scene 1 so far, so good ... all we need is three.

738 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:33 pm

So this Verlander stuff had to be a motivational tactic from Leyland, right?

739 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:33 pm

p.s. If the Tigers still have the lead in the 9th it is only so that sombitch can blow his first save of the year, you know that shit, right?

740 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:33 pm

745 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:34 pm

Folks, all we need is a bloop & a blast to tie this thing. We're winning this game.

746 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:34 pm

Mute time.

747 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:34 pm

Okay this is my last mellow batting half-inning for the Yanks. In the 8th and 9th I will be sweating bullets. On the other hand it will be worth it if it give them a chance to stick it to that douche Valverde

748 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:34 pm

Why does TBS label r h e?

753 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

Great job by Soriano. Totally unexpected.

754 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

Starts with Brett.

755 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

Boy do I hate this fucking God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch. Just a dumb ass knee-jerk response to 9/11 that means absolutely nothing at this point. We ALL love this country but we don't have to ritualistically sing this song every single game

756 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

[746] You don't watch it either?

Especially with it being Philly Kate Smith most nights, I refuse on multiple principles.

Ronan asked for too much money, right? Because he's the one I would listen to, because it brings back a lot of memories.

757 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

Oh, and ends when Teix plants one in the upper fucking deck!

758 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

Hear dat hummmm?

759 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:36 pm

They can stick it to Benoit too for all I care. Then, the douche Valverde.

760 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:37 pm

Do Sikhs have to remove their caps during God Bless America? Just wondering.

761 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:37 pm

755) Stick to the game, off politics.

762 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:38 pm

[760] I don't think anyone has to - don't you really only need to remove the cap during the Anthem?

763 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:38 pm

Runs baby, runs baby, runs baby, runs baby, runs.....

764 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:38 pm

[755] I couldn't agree more. So contrived.

765 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:38 pm

[756] Ronan made some anti-Semetic remarks or something.

766 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:38 pm

Let's GO BRETT!

767 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:39 pm

[765] Oh, Ronan. I can't go with you there...

768 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:39 pm

Dag. Right down the shute.

773 Raf   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:40 pm

783 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:41 pm

Damn, please tell me this is Scherzer's last inning.

C'mon Captain, time for something!

784 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:41 pm

IF Brett Gardner can't get on base with a 3-0 count, we're quite possibly fucked

785 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:42 pm

You know, SOMEONE obviously hit Max Scherzer this year

786 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:42 pm

787 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:42 pm

[786] Yay.

790 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:43 pm

[784] he did everything he could. Couldn't get the fat part of the bat on 3-2 pitch. Was red-lighted on 3-0 & 3-1, as you'd expect.

791 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:43 pm

way to hang tough, DJ!

792 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:44 pm

TOUGH AB. Hang in there, boy-o.

793 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:44 pm

It's just a baseball game, you know - where you get hits and score runs. So Yankees - yes, you are playing a baseball game; you've got that part well underway. Consider it an outline. Now you kind of have to color it in with some actual activity.

794 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:44 pm

Damn, good hustle, Derek.

795 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:44 pm

[801] Love that at-bat, right up there with O'Neill working Benitez for a walk. Man, that was awesome.

806 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:46 pm

Hey if you can't have hope with a mere two run deficit at home, I don't know what to say. It's not like they're down by seven runs.

That being said, the squandered opportunities do sow the seeds of doubt.

807 joe   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:47 pm

Did they PR for Jeter?

808 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:47 pm

[802] well, me neither, but after that fuckstickle at 3-1 in the 4th inning I'm betting CoffeeJoe said hold it, kid.

809 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:47 pm

This could be gross

810 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:48 pm

take that band aid off bitch.

811 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:48 pm

812 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:48 pm

That's weird.

813 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:48 pm

818 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:48 pm

827 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 10:49 pm

DOn't swing for the fences here, Swish, just get a base knock

955 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:03 pm

Ok Swish, a bases clearing double would be awesome, but if I can't have that, I want a non-out event!

C'mon, Nick!

957 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:03 pm

969 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:05 pm

975 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

You suck, NIck.

That was disgraceful.

WHY are you trying to PULL that pitch?

Fuck you.

976 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

That was the least strike-like pitch of the AB

977 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

Its probably time to pull Swisher

978 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

That was ball 3.

979 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

If you can't take advantage of the opportunities that are handed to you then you don't deserve to win, goddamm it all to hell

980 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

I'm losing my positivity because frankly, the Yankees do not deserve to win this game or this series.

981 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

p.s. Yanks are winning this game.

982 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

Valverde might be these jokers' only hope.
Epic offenseive fail to this point.
The boys can stil do it but this is painful.

983 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

Why the fuck is this guy batting behind Teixera still? AWFUL PLAYOFF PLAYER. Go the other way, everything was outside because they know what you're trying to do.

984 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

infield hit, squib hit, walk...one run. A-Rod & Swish whifftastic.."O" is really letting us down.

985 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:06 pm

TWO fucking Ks when all we needed was solid contact.

This team sucks, we're lucky to have the two runs we do.

986 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:07 pm

980) You will get a present tonight anyhow. They are winning. And that's word to Todd Drew.

987 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:07 pm

[977] Really, when are we gonna see Jesus?

988 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:08 pm

[986] I'm not saying it can't happen or won't happen, but this has been some bush-league nonsense with runners on base. The middle of our lineup is a suck-hole.

989 mhoward120   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:08 pm

Do we have ANYONE who doesn't choke in the clutch?

990 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:08 pm

[987] He has to bat for Martin next inning, right?

991 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:08 pm

Biggest two outs of the night coming up.

992 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

Finally found a non-lag stream. FUCKING SWISH. Jesus.

993 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

I like Swisher but his approach has been awful and generally he sucks in the playoffs. Maybe it's time for him to go on his merry little way.

994 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

Now, where is that pitch?

995 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

That curveball is a strike.

996 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

WTF, blue? That was a nasty pitch and a goddamn strike!

997 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

[984] Teix lucked out to get a walk. He'd have popped out if it came down to it.

998 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:09 pm

Okay: I'm comfortable now calling "3" the Tigers' final score. Up to our guys' bats now.

999 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:10 pm

3 balls on the blue. 2-1. I love the blue box.

1000 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:10 pm

It is hard to not have some feeling that Swish maybe needed to not be trotted out for at bat after at bat to fail painfully.

Still, 3-2 after 7.

1012 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:12 pm

1047 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:19 pm

Wow, if only Posada could actually run a little

1048 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:20 pm

Martin? for real?

1049 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:20 pm

Sore old Jorge could teach Swish a thing about legging those out

1050 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:20 pm

That would be a pretty fitting final Jorge AB though. Almost beating out an infield single.

1051 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:20 pm

Damn, that was close

1052 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:20 pm

Oh hell, I can't watch another Martin AB

1061 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:21 pm

That was the worst swing of the night. Martin is lost.

1062 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:21 pm

FUCKING HELL!

Like we can afford to just squander one of five outs?

what the motherfuck?

Girardi maybe oping for a HR

1064 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:21 pm

Way to lay off that shite.

1066 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:21 pm

1068 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

[1061] Sadly, that wasn't his worst swing of the night

1069 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

That's the only upside to Martin - he CAN run into one here. Shitty as he is

1070 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

This is like when Torre let Justice hit in 2001.

1071 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

Take take take take take take! Let him throw you a nice juicy meatball you can crush, Martin!

1072 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

Benoit, I'll give you a hint: Let him hit the ball

1073 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:22 pm

Whoever said fuck the defense is right. You d could catch Mo. And the Tigers don't run.

1074 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

Oh my god.

FUCK you, Joe.

1075 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

1076 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

I didn't have time to type it but I said "Strikeout. I guarantee it"

1077 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

He's killed us. KILLED US.

1078 rbj   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

[1046] Sad, isn't it? Last AB

1079 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:23 pm

Painful.

1080 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:24 pm

[1064] I was thinking that too, but who would you have pinch hit him for? Martin? Swisher? Posada? I'm not sure any of those would have made sense.

Ditto Gardner.

1081 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:24 pm

Let's go Brett. Get on.

1082 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:24 pm

I'm buying into the firsst bs for Valverde tonight

1083 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:25 pm

Now Gardner wants to hit it out.

1084 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:25 pm

[1080] Martin

1085 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

Oh they can definitely get a run off of Valverde...but this has been a very uninspiring offensive performance.

1086 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

I would have pinch hit my mother for Martin.

1087 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

Whaaaaaaaa?

1088 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

Keep. Hope. ALIVE!

1090 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

So who pitches game 1 on sat? AJ?

1091 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

Ok. That works.

1092 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:26 pm

Brett Gardner rocks

1093 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

Leyland is going to pass out. LOL

1094 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

2 out ribeye somewhere! Let's go!

1095 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

Non-out event! Non-out event!

The biggest advantage the Yanks have now is that Leyland doesn't have any other relievers he trusts, and there's almost no way he'll bring in Valverde. He just doesn't do it.

1096 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

If you don't motherfucking steal early in the count I will lose my shit, Gardner

1097 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

RUNRUNRUNRUN

1098 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:27 pm

Unbelievable. I just swallowed the tongue.

1107 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:28 pm

I fear that might be it folks.

The Swisher and Martin AB are going to last a while.

godfuckingdammit!

1109 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:28 pm

Hey guess what kids? If no-one gets on, A Rod makes the final AB!!

1110 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:28 pm

Oh My God, how can this be so painful.

That had such a chance. Dammit. OWWWWW.

Robertson, imo.

And sacrilege, but man, it's almost like you've got to pinch hit for A Rod.

My God, I thought we were about to take the lead.

1111 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:28 pm

Muther Fucking First Pitching Swinging....AGAIN! Let your boy steal. Make the pitcher work ferchrissake!

1112 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:28 pm

1116 rob_smith_51   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:29 pm

At least we get to watch Mo now.

1117 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:29 pm

1109) You are right. A Rod is hitting a walk off homer. Last ab of the night!

1118 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:29 pm

Did Girardi intend that as a hit-and-run? I'd have preferred to see Jetes take for a straight steal.

1119 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:30 pm

[1107] don't kid. Mo in for the 9th. Then we got Grandy, Cano, and Rodriguez up against old news. C'mon...

I'm fucking worried about game 1 against TX. Serious.

Yanks are winning.

1123 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:30 pm

Why couldn't that have been blown over by a magic gust????

1124 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:30 pm

I still think the Yanks will win. Mo gets 3 easy outs, Granderson gets on base, Cano with the series-winning HR - and bring on the Rangers!

Me, I have a ridiculously early meeting tomorrow so I have got to get to bed. Last time I went to sleep before a playoff game ended it was Game 6 in 2001 ALCS. That one worked out just fine - I hope this one does too!

1125 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:30 pm

I'll tell you one thing we need:

Granderson NEEDS TO HAVE A GOOD AT BAT.

He needs to be tenacious and disciplined.

We need you, Curtis.

And then, unleash the apocalypse

A lot of fun this season, but what a bitter fucking end.

And fucking hell, there was a superabundance of pitches to hit.

They can't even put the bat on the baseball.

Lame.

1213 Bronx Boy in NC   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:44 pm

Yanks didn't deserve to win this game but they still deserve our love. Proud to be a fan and grateful for the company of the Banter. Now pardon me while I ignore all newspapers and radios for several days. 'Night all.

What a fucking waste of 6-plus months

1215 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:44 pm

Very big drag. Give the Tigers credit. Good pitching tonight. And the Yanks really squandered their chances. They were in it. Just didn't have any good abs with runners on. The didn't deserve to win.

Bummer way to end the season.

1216 T. Hawk   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:44 pm

Probably shouldn't have gone to 5. The 4,5,6 in the Yankee lineup were absolute garbage

1217 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:45 pm

What a bind - all good sense said series-wise, you have to pinch hit for A Rod. But you can't really, can you?

Martin should have definitely been pinch hit for.

I can't believe after all those opportunities, it ends like that.

Jeter was so fucking close.

1218 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:45 pm

"Yanks didn't deserve to win this game but they still deserve our love. Proud to be a fan and grateful for the company of the Banter."

1223 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:46 pm

[1216] I honestly think the Yanks should've swept. Wasted way too many opportunities. Just pathetic.

1224 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:46 pm

[1219] 4-5-6-8 was a disaster.

I feel like a crumpled newspaper, kicked into the corner of a room of debris.

1226 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:47 pm

Alex and Teix and Swisher didn't hit. What are you going to do? They were 1 run away. They were in the game. They did better than we would have expected all year. They had their chance. They just didn't come through. It's OK. They'll be back next year.

1227 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:47 pm

Hey, I still love the Yankees and will wear my Yankee had with pride and love, man. Tip your cap to Detroit, man.

If I can find a way to stomach Valverde's bush league nonsense, I will be pulling for them.

1228 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:47 pm

Farewell to Gene Monahan too ....

1229 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:48 pm

[1222] He was never even close to my favorite, but man, did he go out like a champ. Jorge was something else this series. Really impressive.

1230 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:48 pm

[1227] Other than Valverde, I have no problem with the Tigers on the field.

1231 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:48 pm

Gritner, Cano, Posada and Grandy hit.
Jeter was decent.
But four guys weren't even replacement level.
ARod with what... 1 hit all series? Teix with 2?

1232 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:48 pm

The season is a total fucking failure. Just a disaster. But I'll have my Yankee hat on tomorrow when I go see Moneyball.

1225) No, you don't. It's okay. They just didn't get it done. Short series. Shit happens. At least they put themselves in a position to win it. They gave us something to cheer for. Sure, and yell at. Sweet agony. That's LIVING, folks. We're alive! It's all good.

1235 jeaner   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:49 pm

A-Rod was a fraud, Shisher was a whiffer, and there was a better chance of getting a hit from Billy Martin than Russell.
Crapahoola

Thanks, though - having like minded posters to type to was more fun than not.

1236 Just Fair   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:50 pm

Next on Cinemax, Fister beats Chokers.
Holy disappointment. 2 fucker homers. 2 out rbi off CC. And a clusterfuck of failures with men in scoring position. The hitters failed plain and simple. They could have had a batting machine throwing and they still only would have scored 2 runs. Pathetic. Props to pitchers holding the tigers down. Some years are better than others.

1237 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:50 pm

[1228] I was really hoping they could send him out with a win.

On the other hand, he's got A LOT OF HARDWARE...

I hear ya' [1227], although Tigers fans can kind of be douches. But as one of the world's biggest Wolverine fans and knowing what that city's been through, if Valverde wasn't there...

Honestly, though, who isn't a Brewers fan right now?

Damn, this end is bitter. Tell me the future looks bright. Somehow, I think we've just seen a lot of good signs.

1238 JeremyM   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:50 pm

Swisher has to go. I like the guy, but he's a liability in the big spots. I don't really think most MLB-level hitters "choke," but Swisher is the exception.

1239 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:50 pm

[1234] But I miss Big-Ears Jorgie already..

1240 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:51 pm

The headline for the recap should be "DIE"

1241 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:51 pm

[1231] A-Rod had 3 hits and 3 RBI and 4 or 5 walks, I believe. He got 2 hits in one inning in the last game. Not a total disaster.

1242 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:52 pm

[1234] I *don't* feel like that? I'm pretty sure I do.

Detroit, as a city, needed this much more than just one individual did. But I sure coulda used a good run.

1243 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:53 pm

Numb.

Arod relishes these chances. Bet on me he says. Sleep well tonight Alex.

Good bye Jorge. We do love you.

To everyone here, thanks for a great season.

1244 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:54 pm

They aren't chokers. They got beat. They didn't have great at bats. But the pitchers kept them in there. And the Tigers are good. Stop bitching. The Tigers won it. It's not just the Yankees' failures. It's the Tigers success.

1245 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:55 pm

[1244] They're not chokers. They weren't good enough.

1246 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:56 pm

[1244] I entirely agree. The Yanks stayed in it. Tiger pitching was good. So was ours.

1247 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:57 pm

The Tigers won it. It's not just the Yankees' failures. It's the Tigers success.

I disagree. We missed many meatballs. The Tigers didn't beat us, we beat ourselves. This was a choke. We simply can't score a man from 3rd with less then 2 out.

Choke.

1248 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:57 pm

[1241] Sorry. 2 hits, 3 BB and 3 RBI. Pretty close to a disaster, actually.

1249 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:58 pm

1242) Maybe you do. I don't mean to be presumptuous. But it's okay even though it sucks right now. Only somber part for me is that this is Jorge and Gene-o's finale.

Missed many meatballs, yeah? Happens. Even to the best of them. Baseball is fucking hard, bro.

Exhausting game. But the Yanks didn't lose for a lack of effort. And I, for one, don't count the season as a failure. I think it was a success. They did better than I expected. Some people didn't think they'd make the playoffs. But they did. Best record in the league. They didn't give up any of their young players. Cano emerged as the leader of the team. Jeter rebounded and had a good year. Mariano, well, what can you say? It's amazing. Posada went out on a high note. Granderson was terrific. David Robertson was wonderful.

And next year we get The Jesus. Maybe some young pitchers.

It ended on a tough, tough note. But even though they didn't get that hit tonight, I'm proud of them for hanging in there. Just didn't go their way. They gave us plenty to cheer this year. And for that I'm grateful.

It just always ends so suddenly, doesn't it?

1250 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:58 pm

What can ya say, this was LITERALLY a case of the ball not falling in when they needed it to. It stings, but it isn't anyone's "fault."

Ever since the Yanks lost in the ALCS last year I had some pretty crazy ups and downs in my personal and professional life, things have basically worked out in the end but it wasn't always a smooth ride. From Opening Day on I had this team to entertain me and distract me when I needed it. No matter what happened tonight I'll never be able to look back on them with anything but fondness.

So thanks 2011 Yankees, you weren't the best team I ever saw but you were a damn good one and a whole lot of fun while you lasted.

1251 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 6, 2011 11:59 pm

Hey, it's the way the goddamn cookie crumbles, right? I hope Detroit wins it all, I really do.

1252 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:00 am

[1249] I'm so not in the mood right now to even think about how the Yankees are going to ruin young pitchers next year.

WHO WILL BE THE NEXT PHIL HUGHES?

1253 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:00 am

[1250] That's part of it. Really fun watching them race past a Red Sox team standing still and then going in reverse.

Would have been nice to see a little more oomph in the ending. But there were certainly things to enjoy.

Tonight just felt - so close. And that hurts.

1254 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:01 am

At least we got to see Mo be Mo.

1255 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:01 am

[1249] They absolutely exceeded expectations - especially with all the DL time for Jeter and A-Rod and the lack of a rotation! It was a really fun season. We Yankee fans are really a disgustingly spoiled, childish lot. We've seen this team win 5 World Series and 7 Pennants in 15 years, and we bitch and moan. Get some perspective.

...and just wait til next year.

1256 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:01 am

I don't even remember anything from this year. I've already forgotten 2011

1257 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:02 am

Oh, and btw, I still stand by this: FUCK GERRY DAVIS. YOU ARE STILL A WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT HACK. RETIRE OR KILL YOURSELF.

Thanks.

1258 JeremyM   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:02 am

[1247] I think it was a choke by certain players (bases loaded with 1 out twice and only 1 run off of a walk?). Just my opinion. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter.

I am happy Posada went out on fire. I'm going to miss that redass. Part of me wants him to retire, but if he really does want to still play, I won't begrudge him.

1259 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:03 am

1257) There you go. At least you've still got your sense of humor. LOL

1260 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:04 am

1255) Here Here!

1261 JeremyM   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:04 am

[1255] I will co-sign this. This was a fun season with a shitty ending.

1262 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:04 am

[1255] We're also not really allowed to celebrate things like Division Championships. Certainly, the organization invites that, by making clear what their goal is, and the payroll is what it is, but the rest of the country doesn't let us have much joy over doing what they see as the expected.

I guess it's up to us to remember that they can't change that we had fun along the way, and wow, can you imagine rooting for the Mariners.

1263 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:04 am

I take it back. I remember those FUCKING RUSSELL MARTIN AT BATS

1264 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:05 am

[1259] Who's joking!

Just kidding.

Although I did write an email to his web address/site that I'll never send. I really do consider his "performance" in Game 3 to have been a deeply shameful thing.

1265 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:05 am

Detroit's a good team and all, and congrats to them, but our hitters were pathetic in this game.

I'm so mad.

1266 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:07 am

[1262] Exactly! Think of all the fans who love a team that can't win 82 games. We start every season on the shortlist of potential WS Champs. Obviously, we can't win every year, that just doesn't happen, and if you're not winning it all, the end is going to be tough to take.

But I love the Yankees and I'm proud to be a fan and I cannot wait to watch this team next year...look out for Jesus, American League.

1267 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:08 am

[1263] The last few will definitely be appearing in screwball nightmares for the next few months.

I never thought this team was going anywhere in the postseason, but I really thought it was because of the pitching.

I wonder how much losing Cervelli actually hurt? Sounds laughable, but I dare say you might have been able to avoid some Martin at bats with that replacement available. And what dick smashed Romine on the back of the head?

1268 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:09 am

If Detroit and Milwaukee go to the WS, who will watch the games (besides die-hards like us)?

I do dig Jim Leyland, a gruff 50+ year baseball man with a catch in his voice describing Jim Kelly's HR moment.

1269 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:10 am

Good for Detroit, they deserve something awesome.

Go kick the SHIT out of Texas, they deserve something awful.

But, I'm not going to sit here and pretend what just happened wasn't a loss, because it was.

Offense went what, 4 for 40 with RiSP in the series?

2! bases loaded situations with 1 out in tonight's game and NOBODY managed to get the ball out of the fucking infield even though they got PLENTY of fat fucking pitches to hit.

Yeah, the offense spit the bit AGAIN tonight and it wasn't about the quality of the opposing pitching ...

1270 JeremyM   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:10 am

[1267] Man, I hadn't even considered that. Losing Cervelli was huge in hindsight.

1271 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:10 am

1266) Everyone rock your Yankee caps to work tomorrow. REPRESENT!

1272 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:11 am

The Yankees should be ashamed about one thing, though - if you get to a Game 5, can you please give Mr. Rivera a damn lead to work with in the 9th?

1273 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:13 am

[1270] I felt it every time I found myself thinking "you gotta pull Russell."

I'm sorry, but here's a bitter thought: lost it on a Don Fucking Kelly Home Run.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Show of hands, who thought Jeter's long fly was gone before they cut to Kelly looking like he thought he had room?

I'm in for one.

Why must Valverde - who I still think SUCKS - exist? I'd be rooting so hard for Detroit over the Nolan's, otherwise.

1274 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:13 am

[1271] Man, I always do that after elimination games. Gotta show the haters you're not some fair-weather, johnny-come-lately pseudo-fan.

1275 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:14 am

The worst part of this is every time they lose, the window closes just a little bit more. Jeter and A-Rod will be a combined 745 (estimated) next year. CC might not be back. Phil Hughes is ruined. Hell only knows how terrible Burnett will be next year, with even less of a chance of actually being removed. Presumably at some point Mariano Rivera is going to slow down. We have no other starting pitchers.

This team might be in a lot of trouble next year

1276 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:15 am

[1271] Oh God, of course. I have four or five nice Yankee hats, and I'm deciding between them. I might wear my pinsriped one

1277 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:17 am

[1276] And be proud none of us own pink hats!

I'm out. Go Go Brewers!

1278 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:18 am

Anyhow, it was cool experiencing it with you guys. Thanks for coming, and returning to the Banter. End of season 9 for the Banter. Yanks have made the playoffs every year but one. It's always fun following the team with you fucking nut jobs!

Here's raising a glass to you guys.

1279 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:18 am

[1277] Indeed.

Go Tigers!

Go Cardinals!

Go Brewers!

1280 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:19 am

[1275] I'm not at all convinced Hughes is ruined. We will see. You're right about some of those players, but the Yankees have this absurd pile of money, so as long as they don't completely lose their minds, they will be in the mix. They don't have to "rebuild" - they can afford to mix in veteran stars with the kids. Cashman will have an interesting winter, to say the least.

1281 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:19 am

[1275] Call me tooptimistic, but I don't see it that way.

I think Jeter has at least another year in the tank. I saw things out of him this year I'd given up hope on.

A Rod was busted up all year. I know it's because he's old, but I actually see him having a bounceback season next year. If he's at least healthier than *that* - I still think he's a great player.

Hughes showed some signs at the end of *not* being ruined. One hopes this is the start of a lot of good pitching by Nova. Do we really have to not find ANYTHING redemptive in AJ finally nutting up and doing something no one thought he would do? Maybe this was the one he needed.

Rivera is not ready to slow down. That last half inning may have been the most dominant half inning I saw pitched ALL YEAR.

1282 thelarmis   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:21 am

go brewers!

1283 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:22 am

[1278] Big thanks to you Alex. The banter is a place for relatively sane, interesting fans with an appreciation of the finer things in life. 180 degrees apart from shit radio and homer blogs.

I'll be back if you'll let me.

1284 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:26 am

[1284] Seconded. Just the right mix of allowing some of our foul mouthed tirades (a few of us ringing up jussssssst a few more than other folks), some good baseball talk, lots of other stuff, and a feeling that the asshole quotient is almost nonexistent around here.

I really do feel like a balled up piece of news print, and I try to share some sincere reflections like that to balance out my more direct statements on my mood swings which are so often summarized as FUCK.

1285 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:27 am

[1278] Yeah, BIG thanks Alex, the Banter is where I come to chat about all things Yankees, thanks for keeping it going day-to-day.

1286 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:27 am

And I just referenced my own post within that post. Accidentally.

That was for you [1283], King of the Double Post.

1287 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:28 am

Thanks for everything, Alex. Fire up that stove, it's gonna be a long winter, buddy.

(Lots of time for movies, huh?)

1288 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:29 am

[1281] If Phil Hughes winds up a reliever, I consider that ruined.

1289 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:29 am

[1280] Thanks again for the Banter, Al. I hate getting knocked out of the playoffs again, but it's good to have a place to commisserate.

Fuck Rangers.

1290 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:31 am

[1281] And I really can't imagine a scenario where 35 year old AJ Burnett is anything but lousy

1291 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:32 am

[1288] Seems to me our rotation will have room for him! Given the emergence of DRob, I would think Phil is given every chance to be in the rotation next year. It's not like its going to look overcrowded in March.

1292 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2011 12:34 am

Well, good night and good luck, sweet Banterers ... I imagine I'll check in with you sometime between now and say ... March, depending on the news, of course.

via con dios ...

1293 Raf   ~  Oct 7, 2011 7:15 am

Cervelli's loss may have been huge, but the Yankees had the option to carry Romine as well as Montero. With a full bench, no reason they couldn't use Montero or Posada behind the plate.

As for pitching, there's CC (provided he doesn't opt out and signs elsewhere), Burnett, Hughes & Nova. I'm sure a FA will be signed. Maybe someone'll be traded for. Garcia & Colon may have earned another go-round. Betances and Banuelos among others await on the farm. Mitre will always be around.

Joba'll be back next year, adding to Robertson, Soriano & Mo.

The Yanks'll be fine.

1294 jjmerlock   ~  Oct 7, 2011 3:49 pm

[1293] You sure Romine wasn't dinged by getting slammed in the head with a bat?
