Wells, wells, wells ...

2 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:29 pm

Wait, what?

Michael Kay is in the booth!

WhaWhaWha???

3 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:35 pm

I believe with every ounce of my being that Wells is going to turn very ugly before the end of the season. That said, I am loving how wrong he's made me look so far.

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:36 pm

Hey ... Nune5 did something smart in the field ... for once ...

5 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:40 pm

[3] Why? He has made serious adjustments. He talked about them over the winter, and has been getting results since Day 1 of Spring training.

He isn't that old. His terrible performance over the last few years APPEAR to be based on a poor approach, as opposed to to steep decline in skills.

Now I don't expect a .900+ OPS from him, but .800 is certainly not out of the question.

6 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:49 pm

[2] I think he broke his cherry last year and finally did games in Toronto.

7 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:49 pm

[5] Why? Seriously? Every year a washed up player claims to come into spring training in the best shape ever, with a new approach, etc. etc. I trust historical performance and trends more than claims by players on the wrong side of thirty that they've found the magic bullet solution to declining performance. Wells OPS+ since 2007: 85, 123, 86, 125, 84, 91, and this season 161 (!!).

Moreover, for his whole career he has been pretty flaky, putting up a few excellent campaigns among several average or worse than average seasons. he's a career .789 OPS/106 OPS+ hitter.

I'd be stunned if he puts up .800 OPS for an entire season. Happy, but stunned.

8 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:52 pm

In case anyone has been wondering: Sterling began the season using "Wells' bells!" for VW's homers, but now he says "The Bronx is Vernon!"

9 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:53 pm

I'm beginning to wonder if Ben Francisco is truly the lefty killer Joe thinks he is

10 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:54 pm

The thing I think works in favor of the Vernon Wells Revival is the fact that he's playing in NYS.

From what I've read, his off-season epiphany involved realizing he was trying to pull every pitch and then adjusting his approach to let the ball travel further and go the other way.

If there's any park that rewards a RHB for driving the ball the other way, it's NYS.

I'll believe this start at the end of the season, but make of that what you will ...

11 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:55 pm

[8] Thanks for the update. I missed that, not surprisingly, since I haven't listened to a Yankees radio broadcast in about three years.

12 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:55 pm

Pretty liner right up the middle by Robbie.

13 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:59 pm

[10] He struck the ball well, no? Hard line drive, Rasmus had to go back for it.
I like what I see so far, more than I expected to.

14 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:59 pm

Get on the bag, Robbie! Yikes! He was clueless.

15 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 12:59 pm

Sorry, that was supposed to be about [9], not about [10].

16 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:00 pm

Now boo, dummies. Boo that.

17 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:02 pm

That pitch is even fucking close to a strike.

18 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:02 pm

[10] Is he really going the other way more? I didn't see his HR today, but his other four have been dead pull jobs according to hit tracker. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an updated hit chart for him this year.

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:06 pm

[18] Hell if I know ...

Nice story though, if you like those sorts of things, right?

20 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:09 pm

Stealing a hit from his old buddy. Rob is such a meanie.

21 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:11 pm

Great story, even better if proves to be real!

22 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:19 pm

That was a weird looking double by Gardner. I guess they were playing pretty shallow.

23 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:20 pm

It's okay to swing, Ben.

24 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:20 pm

For fuck's sake, swing the bat.

25 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:21 pm

Or, just watch. You paid your admission, you can feel free to stand there and watch.

26 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:22 pm

Yeah, even I don't hate this IBB.
But, the Greek God of Walks with the bases loaded, that could work out...

27 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:22 pm

That'll do. Pyouk!

28 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:22 pm

Yooooooouuuuuuuuk!

29 rbj   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:23 pm

Blue Jays just aren't that good defensively, are they.

30 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:23 pm

No way that's a hit. E5 all the way says me. : )

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:23 pm

Yewcoulis!!!

32 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:23 pm

This Blue Jays team does not seem good at defence. Or defense, as they say it up here.

33 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:24 pm

"Single"

Heh.

34 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:24 pm

[29] [32] True. I wonder if they really do stink, or we've just seen a bad streak.

35 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:24 pm

OK, he went the other way that time.

36 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:25 pm

My God! Wells must be in the best shape of his life!

37 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:26 pm

They said, "If only Frankie could but get a whack at that..."

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:26 pm

Wells, that hit was to the opposite field!

SSS FTW!!!

39 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:26 pm

Ohhhh, Frankie.

40 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:30 pm

All 5 of Wells HRs this year have been pulled, with an average distance around 380'

41 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:31 pm

Colby Rasmus is my wife's new favorite player, now that Marco Scutaro has shipped out from the AL East.

42 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:33 pm

Man!.... that Wells can really fly!

43 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:36 pm

It's time for Joe to put his arm around Nuney again.

44 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:37 pm

Nuñez looks hopeless at bat this year.

45 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:40 pm

Down goes Youk. Uh-oh.

46 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:40 pm

It's sweet of Girardi to put Overbay in so all the ex-Blue Jays can get in the game!

47 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:41 pm

Pastadivingnuñez

48 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:42 pm

mm, pasta.

49 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:43 pm

Robinson Cano is the Best 2B in all of baseball. That is all.

50 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:43 pm

Excellent! Pitcher's best friend. And one pitch, too.

51 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:44 pm

[49] The Jays' announcers are giving him love for the pivot and throw.

52 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:46 pm

[51] Poetry in motion. And Melky keeps trying to sneak one by him. lol...

53 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:46 pm

So.... if we are playing the Blue Jays....
WE MUST BE IN THE WORLD SERIES!

54 rbj   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:50 pm

Yes Michael, give hitting advice to Wade Boggs.

55 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:56 pm

Dang. Both of those called balls were in the zone.

56 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 1:56 pm

Got him anyway.

57 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:00 pm

Hiroki! Hiroki! Hiroki!

58 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:00 pm

Hiroki Badass.
Great pitching, just great.

59 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:04 pm

Celtics draw first blood...

60 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:11 pm

Knicks taking control now.

61 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:15 pm

I <3 Hiroki Kuroda

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:18 pm

ALABAMA HAMMA TIME!!!

63 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:19 pm

I haven't watched a single bball game this season. I am more into hockey. But I'll have to start checking in for the last 2 minutes of these playoff games. What a gem by Kuroda. Damn, just toying with the Jays.

64 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:20 pm

Hammer time.

65 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:22 pm

Nailed.

66 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:25 pm

Hm. That last one looked pretty good to me.
Okay, Dave, this is the big one. Hammer him.

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:25 pm

Meh.

68 rbj   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:26 pm

Dammit.

69 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:26 pm

Okay, that annoys me.

70 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:26 pm

shit

71 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:27 pm

Shutout goes poof. Rats. Let's so, Dave.

72 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:27 pm

No problem. Dave gets Melky, then Mo will wrap it up.

73 rbj   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:30 pm

Modammit!

74 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:30 pm

Fuck.

75 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:30 pm

Ugh
Not classic Hammer, for sure.

76 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:30 pm

What a fucking waste of Kuroda game. FUCK.

77 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:30 pm

Goddam it. Fuck.

78 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:32 pm

Meanwhile, the Celtics take the lead on a 1st Q buzzer-beater.

79 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:33 pm

I'll say that I can sort of live with blowing the game with Robertson over Joba or MATCHUPS.

80 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:33 pm

[78] So some good news.

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:34 pm

AAAAARGH.

Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail.

82 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:34 pm

Sure, now.

83 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:37 pm

Atta boy, Nuney. Nice start. Ugh.

84 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:37 pm

Thanks for getting that over with quickly, Eduardo.

85 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:40 pm

This game sure turned around fast.
But so has the Knick game -- Celtics took a 6 point lead, but then the Knicks made three threes, unanswered.

86 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:41 pm

Joba? Hold onto your hats.

87 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:41 pm

[83] The funny thing about Nunez is that his defense has improved somewhat, but he just isn't hitting a lick

88 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:43 pm

Oh.
Interesting choice. Joba. Hm.

Huh.

89 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:44 pm

I just don't even have the energy for Joba.

90 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:47 pm

[87] It's maddening. Maybe he needs to botch a few routine plays to get his hitting groove back.

91 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:47 pm

Jason Kidd kind of looks like Raul Ibañez.

92 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:48 pm

Match ups! Hurray!

93 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:51 pm

Melo getting in the groove...

94 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:54 pm

Wow, nice job, Boone-Joba.

95 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:54 pm

So, if we don't score, you bring Boone back out, right? Or right to Mo either way?

96 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:59 pm

Ben Francisco, who doesn't hit lefties, is now 2-16 with two walks against them this year.

But he's right handed.

97 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:59 pm

Both hits are singles, by the way.

98 Ara Just Fair   ~  Apr 20, 2013 2:59 pm

Ben Francisco's at bats are can't miss events.

99 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:05 pm

Melo has cooled, Jeff Green heats up.

Slainte!

103 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:13 pm

What a day for Vernon.

Okay, let's get him across and go to Mo.

104 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:14 pm

God yes! No bunt, and it pays off! Excellent chess.

105 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:15 pm

I won't complain if Ichiro bunts though...

Oh, better! Better!

106 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:16 pm

Oh, man. Wow.

I always forget about possibilities like that when I complain about bunts.

I think the Jays' defense officially sucks, by the way.

107 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:17 pm

Didn't deserve that, but I'll take it!

108 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:19 pm

Yay!

MORE bunts!

109 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:20 pm

What, no squeeze???

110 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:21 pm

[106] Better to get plays like that out of the way now against us, rather then in the World Seriousness

111 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:21 pm

Shoulda skwuzz.

112 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:22 pm

Mo time.

113 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:24 pm

Mo vs. Joey Bats.

114 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:26 pm

Uh oh.
Cutter did not cut. At all.

115 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:27 pm

Oh, because it wasn't a cutter. How come?

116 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:29 pm

That's more like it.

117 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:29 pm

Am I wrong, or are Mo's Cutters a bit flat so far this year?

118 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:30 pm

Thanks be to Mo.

119 rbj   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:30 pm

Ah, Mo.

120 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:30 pm

That last pitch? The Unfair One.

All praise Mo.

121 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:31 pm

Praise be!

122 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:31 pm

[120] And Outside too.

123 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 3:34 pm

[122] Nope, over the corner. Look at the Pitch f/X.

Heretic.

124 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 4:25 pm

Oh, Carmelo.
My expectations for the Knicks are... low. But Melo gets props for this game. (Just ran the shot clock down to a fraction and drained a fall-away with a Celtic in his face.)

125 monkeypants   ~  Apr 20, 2013 4:29 pm

[122][123] Brett Lawrie had a disastrous game: brutal defence at 3B allowed several runs, 0-5 with 3K and made the last out of the game...and then stood there jawing with the ump about the K call.

126 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 4:30 pm

And now a heads-up pass by Carmelo, with good off-ball movement by K-Mart!

I'm feeling this one. Feeling it.

127 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 4:30 pm

[125] Oh, baseball, right? I forgot. Yeah, well, he tried, but the ump walked away IIRC.

128 RIYank   ~  Apr 20, 2013 4:32 pm

De-FENSE!

Impressive. The Celtics scored 8 points in the fourth quarter.

Few things are more satisfying than beating Garnett.
