Three day week-end! (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap)

Huge series this weekend. Too bad about the Sat and Sun matinees, which I'll miss. Those games are worthy of national primetime treatment - even if it meant us having to suffer Fox and ESPN coverage.

(1) What is it about Joe Buck that anybody can stand?

[2] Ummmmm.

There must be something!

Efficient.

7 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 6:29 pm

Good.

8 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 6:35 pm

Just have to bunt it a little harder.

9 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 6:39 pm

Fat kid looking good.

10 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 6:53 pm

Nerts.

11 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 6:56 pm

Crap.

12 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:03 pm

I'm thinking the team would improve it's chances by getting a fucking hit. I dunno, haven't done the analysis or anything, but that's my gut feeling.

13 monkeypants   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:06 pm

[11] I'm not so sure. Hits are bound up intrinsically with batting average, and we all know how overrated that is.

14 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:06 pm

[11] Which Yankee was it who lost a no-hitter, 4-0, Rudy Davis?

15 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:07 pm

Well there's your hit.

16 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:07 pm

Yeah, baby!

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:08 pm

Cashman's Lament!

18 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:10 pm

Who's Sori now?

(That's Sterling's HR call. But he sings it. Really.)

19 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:13 pm

Uh.
There was nobody covering anyway. WTF?

20 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:14 pm

Oh, come on. Goddam it.

21 mhoward120   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:15 pm

CC as long relief man?

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:16 pm

Seriously, CC?

Fucking pathetic.

23 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:17 pm

Well this has taken an ugly turn.

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:17 pm

Wow, *only* 10 times, it sure seems like more, but I guess the reality is that CC's been such shit this year that the Yankees are always behind.

Sigh.

25 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:18 pm

Okay. ENOUGH. Outs, now.

26 monkeypants   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:21 pm

[13] Andy Hawkins. It remains to this day the only no hitter that I have ever watched as it happened (on TV).

27 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:21 pm

Is Teagarden that bad that it makes sense to have him bunt? Wow, he's terrible. I guess it really does.

28 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:24 pm

Hoo boy.
This feels like about the limit. The Yanks can get a couple of runs, but CC can't give up another Hughes or it's over.

29 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:26 pm

Okay.
Now time to go to work.

30 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:27 pm

[25] Thanks. I did see the end of Cone's & Wells' perfectos, but that & the Astro's 6 pitcher were the only ones I saw from start to finish.

31 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:30 pm

Double, double, toil and trouble...

And there's the trouble!

32 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:41 pm

Come on Robbie. Salami sammich sounds good right now.

33 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:41 pm

Whoa.
We have a chance to put these birds away now. Just the right hitters to do it, too...

34 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:45 pm

Robiwon Cano-bi, the Force is with you!

35 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:46 pm

I'll take it.

36 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:47 pm

Well, we ain't behind NO MORE!!!

37 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:50 pm

Boo, A-Rod!

38 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:53 pm

Time to step up, fat guy.

39 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:54 pm

Yeah, no. Not like that.

40 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:55 pm

Not good start to the inning.

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:57 pm

GET SOMEONE UP.

NOW.

42 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:58 pm

For some reason Michael Kay is grating on me more than usual today. I am welcoming Flash's unguent tones.

43 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:58 pm

[41] Nah, he's fine.

44 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:59 pm

[40] Kelley. I suspect CC is done after this inning

45 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 7:59 pm

No, bad call, I think. That was just a grounder that found a hole.

Damn, this is a mistake.

46 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:00 pm

Oh, my numbering is wrong, sorry. (I have a comment hanging in moderation.)

47 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:01 pm

pull him, Pull Him, PULL HIM.

PULL HIS FAT ASS, NOW!

48 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:01 pm

(41) 'unguent'?
I've got an 'adult headache' just tuning in. What I miss?

49 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:02 pm

Yeah, mistake. CC wasn't struggling.

Too much management.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:03 pm

Good job, Joe.

Hey Fat Man, if you don't want to leave the game before you think it's time, pitch better than Phil Hughes ...

51 BobbyB   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:03 pm

CC needs to put the weight back on, or something. He's becoming Phil Hughes.

52 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:03 pm

Unctuous?

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:03 pm

[48] Uh, what?

CC's been garbage the last 2 innings.

Absolutely the right call.

54 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:05 pm

Phew.

Still up by 2.

Time for some tack on runs.

55 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:10 pm

Dammit!

56 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:10 pm

[52] Nah, he was fine. Mistake pitch for the homer. His last batter was just a grounder pasta diving Cano.

57 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:12 pm

I am beginning to dislike this Machado fellow. I suspect he's going to be a thorn in the side of the Yankees for years to come.

58 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:16 pm

[56] In everybody's side.

59 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:17 pm

Ah, Joba is up.
Yeah, good thing Joe pulled CC after 85 pitches. Now we get to see Joba.

60 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:19 pm

Machado on deck.
Joba. Machado. Hm.

61 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:19 pm

[55] Eh. CC's about as reliable as Phil Hughes these days. He deserves about as much of a leash, i.e. none.

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:20 pm

Uh, wait, did everyone else miss the part where David Robertson was *also* up?

63 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:22 pm

Aha! D-Rob!

Now that is a good call.

64 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:23 pm

Eh, even if it's Joba, no out, nobody on, with The Hammer up behind him (and coming in to start the next inning, no matter what), no big deal.

Jobber gets ONE guy.

He gets the out, or The Hammer comes in.

Seems good to me.

65 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:23 pm

[61] But why was Joba up at all if the plan was for D-Rob to enter in the seventh? Odd.

Anyway, happy call.

66 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:24 pm

Wait, there's some such thing as "New York Yankees Frozen Pizza" that is available for purchase?

67 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:25 pm

[63] I figured Machado had about a one in three chance of doubling off Joba.

But now it's Robertson for four outs, which in my opinion is the best option, so it worked out.

68 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:25 pm

[64] WHO DARES QUESTION THE BINDER!?!?!?!?

69 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:31 pm

Harumph.
Yeah, probably his hand went past the bag.
Brett doesn't quite have the knack of being a speedster.

70 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:33 pm

I HATE the orioles.

71 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:33 pm

Make 'em Sori...

72 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:34 pm

Oh, chess. I love chess.

73 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:36 pm

Okay. Make 'em regret it, A-Rod.

74 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:39 pm

Our Rod’s better than yooooooooour Rod!

75 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:40 pm

[65] I was as shocked as you were when I reported this to AB a few months ago after spotting it in the frozen food section at the supermarket near where I live. I have not the heart nor stomach to try... without compensation.

76 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:40 pm

All is forgiven, Alex.

77 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:40 pm

[74] Okay, I'll give you a root beer.

78 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:41 pm

Uh.

That was... interesting.

79 Ara Just Fair   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:41 pm

Well that was a shit show. Oi.

80 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:44 pm

How old is Soriano?

HOW LONG has he been playing this fucking game?

Strewth ...

81 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:44 pm

[76] ...what brand?

82 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:45 pm

[80] Stewarts.
There are still Stewarts, right? There was one in Rhode Island but it closed long ago.

83 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:47 pm

[65] Wait. There's fucking frozen pizza in fucking New York?! I've been living on faux pizza all over the country (Hawaiian pizza in Portland Oregon is not the low point) and there's a decent pizza jernt on practically every block in the city and there's fucking frozen pizza?

End times, end times.

84 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:49 pm

[81] There are plenty of Stewarts Shops up in Dutchess County; as many as there are Subway shops in the city. But the shops only sell the plastic bottles; I want glass bottles, and make it a 6-pack.

85 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:49 pm

NAILED.

86 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:51 pm

[83] You drive a hard bargain.
But I guess when you're taking your life (or taste buds) in your hands, you can name your price.

Taking your taste buds in your hands. Yuch.

87 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:52 pm

[82] This will blow your mind then... they also sell a frozen pizza brand called California Kitchen next the New York Yankees pizza... aauuggghhhh!!!!

88 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:53 pm

Okay, Hamma Time. Got 'em right where you want 'em...

89 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:54 pm

What is Valencia waiting for??

90 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:56 pm

Okay, that'll do. Not elegant, but effective.

91 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:57 pm

[85] Yer dern tootin'...

There is a non-frozen brand called Vila Roma that PathMark sells that's not that bad; I mean if you can't get to a decent place or you're trying to save a few dollars. Good pizza is expensive around here now, but worth it to avoid the cheap stuff if you can.

92 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 8:58 pm

[83] Hmmm, will have to check but The Anderson's here in the mid-west has Stewarts in glass bottles. Weird company. General merchandise store, with a gourmet food & wine & beer section. And their main bizness is grain transportation via railroad.

93 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:02 pm

Hmm, root for a no save situation here?

94 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:03 pm

[92] If I were at the Stadium, I would be secretly hoping Austin would strike out or pop up... Here at home, I'll definitely take the insurance run if he can get it.

95 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:04 pm

The bat didn't matter. He was dead in the water.

96 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:05 pm

This has been one awful day of base running for the Yankees, huh?

97 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:06 pm

Mo time.

98 rbj   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:06 pm

Mo time!

99 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:08 pm

[91] There are a lot of corner stores here that sell them in glass bottles and a few supermarkets that sell them in 4-packs; I always found it strange that the Stewarts shops didn't sell their own product the same way, but in inferior plastic bottles instead.

100 thelarmis   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:10 pm

Let's go Mo!!!

They have Stewart's in bottles at some restaurants 'round these parts. I just had a Barq's...

Wish I could watch Mo pitch. It's been a crazy game to follow on my iPhone.

Good win.

Better win would have involved even a DECENT game from CC, but I guess we should be happy for the offense ...

109 RIYank   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:18 pm

Listening to Suzyn interview Ichiro. It's surreal. She keeps mouthing inanities -- "This time of year, Ichiro, how important is it to do the little things like moving runners along?" -- and he keeps saying his loony shit. "I have to do something or everyone is going to hate me."

(I actually like Suzyn, but this is not her best thing.)

110 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 30, 2013 9:29 pm

Happy! Good thing because how would the weekend be if the outcome was different. Went to Cooperstown today with my family on the way to Saratoga. My one and only child starts college tomorrow. Many mixed emotions.
