Have Bats, Will Travel

The Yankees belted the ball around last night, scored 11 runs and gave C.C. Sabathia the kind of cushion ever pitcher dreams of. He pitched a decent game, too as the Yanks cruised to an 11-5 win in Tampa. First win for C.C. since Christ was a cowboy.

Smile.

So far this team has far exceeded my expectations. I expected a lot of what we saw last year, putrid offense, runners stranded, good pitching wasted, followed by untimely bad pitching, a average team that looked like it was about to turn into a losing team.

This team is doing so many things right, and I am pleasantly surprised.

My biggest beef is still seeing Stephen Drew on the team, but the winning and the ugly staches are helping me ignore the sight of him.

I think it's about time this team got some character in their look; I never liked the clean-shaven corporate office look to be honest. Too sterile and conformist. Now these look like guys you'd hang out with or stay away from, either way they look more interesting. And play more interestingly, too (not that one has anything to do with the other, but if you're gonna look at someone, at least they oughtta be doing something).

I just hope they don't take it all he way to the Nouveau Williamsburg look, then I'll stop watching again...

Love the irony that they look like a group of gay strippers.

My dad always referred to the Yankees as the "Spankees' when I was a kid just to annoy me. The porn star look definitely fits the old man's team better. lol...

(4) So true!

I like what they always say, "A win is a win." It might be harder to come by wins in October and this team is probably over achieving.

Maybe Cash can go out and swing a deal for Cole Hamels based on their play in the first month?

CC was bound to win a game sooner or later, and I just hope the Yanks don't get too hung up on his contract and keep running him out there if he continues to be ineffective. He used to be a horse, but he is pitching like the long man in the bullpen this year. That is a lot of cheese to pay for the long man, but if they really want to win?

4) Irony is that most ballplayers--and I'm generalizing as well as casting stones, I know--aren't the most tolerant, gay-friendly folks going. Maybe that's not irony. But it's funny to me.

Alex - thanks. Yopu're right, it may not be irny, but it sure is funny!

BTW, just got tickets for the Yanks here in DC next Tuesday, so I'll be able to see them live for the first time this year. Maybe I'll add live blogs from onsite.

[7] I also hope they don't give up the farm on a high-priced, high risk rental who doesn't intend to stay. I shake my head at the hack reports of Yanks trading several different farm players with potential for a pitcher like Cole Hamels or Johnny Cueto. Why do they insist that the Yanks still operate like George is going to come back and demand win-now-at-all-cost trades? Get over it or get a new profession.

(10) Hamels is signed through 2018. The Yanks prospects might not be enough to swing the deal, but prospects are just that.

This team is designed as a win now team. They sure stand less of a chance next year with ARod, CC, Tex and Beltran each a year older.

I wish they had tried rebuilding last year or a few years ago maybe they could have fleeced the Dodgers instead of the Sox dumping all those crazy contracts.
