One to Go

You want to know about last night’s game, check the less-than-measured game thread, particularly my comments. It was not an enjoyable evening.

The Yankees left a million men on base–Sox pitchers walked 11 batters, only 1 scored–and generally acted like they were allergic to winning. And yet they still inched one game closer to clinching a wild card spot. Had they won, they would have clinched. But they gagged, and a sprightly Boston team had some fun, winning 9-5 in 11 innings.

For all my bitching last night, the Yanks are practically a shoe-in for the playoffs. And I don’t really care how ugly the landing has been–just get that ticket punched.  Course it would almost be civil if they were put out of their misery in the wildcard game because having to face certain doom at the hands of the Blue Jays is no way to end a season.

Then again, anything can happen. And hell, if the Yanks made it through the ALDS, that sure would be proof enough for me.

So this is the part where my brain tries to trick me by saying, "You know, all those champioship teams during the run stumbled late in the season. We used to spend every September saying they were cooked. Don't worry."

Except (a) this is not the turn-on-the-light-switch-when-we-want-to Yankees of that era, and (b) my brain is an idiot. Retrosheet:

..........Sept/Oct reg s...last 10 games
1996....16-11...............5-5
1998....16-11...............8-2
1999....17-14...............5-5
2000....13-18..............2-8
2003....18-9-1 (!)........7-3
2009....20-11...............7-3

2015....14-14, 4 to go....4-6 last 10 played
.....................................2-4-?? last 10 of season

(did the best I could with columns, sorry)

So the Subway Series year is really the only instance in which my brain accurately remembers a real shitburger of a September.

And if the next couple of days go surprisingly well, the closest model we can hope for is the 99 Atlanta year.

(Peers over glasses like Matt Foley)

Is that Tino Martinez I see over there? Is that Bernie Williams? Is that David Cone?

(Falls through coffee table)

Glad I turned it off. I'm about in a puppy kicking mood. Good thing my dogs are old.

What was most important about last night's game was that ARod hit a homer, which hopefully gets him restarted, and Tanaka got some work in and will hopefully be ready for a 1 game wild card.

Bettances better shake that off, and it could be that he is overworked and tired. He has pitched a ton of innings. This is like when Torre used to overwork his middle relief guys. Poor Flash Gordon. Dellin is a young guy, but I hope Girardi can get him a few days off to rest prior to the first wild card game.

Let's wrap this rascal and get er done!

4) He has thrown a lot. But less than last year. Wonder if this is just a spell. But yeah, he's been putting in a ton of work all year.
