So, I was told there is a new sport debuting today?

2 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:08 pm

16 team playoffs?

3 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:15 pm

I’m watching!
But saw on Twitter that the Yankees are asking the ‘President’ to throw out the first pitch at home this year...surely that’s not going to happen?

4 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:16 pm

Stanton!

5 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:17 pm

KABOOM!

6 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:17 pm

Goodness Stanton!, 450feet..!

7 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:18 pm

[3] yep I’m pissed.

But hell yeah to Giancarlo!

8 Springdeeds   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:20 pm

ESPN Announcers really dreadful to me--- wish wish wish I could have John and Suzyn synced up.

Gianclarlo!

9 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:23 pm

Popped up ball 4. Good.

10 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:26 pm

Just great to see real baseball. But nats missing Soto due to virus. Could make it real tough for them to make WS. Got the feeling lots of teams are going to lose players. I really don’t think we’ll have a full season.

11 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:26 pm

So they are using 2019 baseballs.

12 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:26 pm

Gerrit Whitson, he can’t handle NYC

13 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:28 pm

How the hell does Hernandez get to ump the opener? He may be the worst umpire ever!!

14 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:30 pm

It's so surreal. Sounds ok when not in the room, but watching the empty stands and no real crowd reaction is just... weird.

15 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:34 pm

That was Voit? How much weight did he lose??

16 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:36 pm

Mad Max looks mid season form

17 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:37 pm

I watched an NBA game highlight from Florida last night. The entire length of court where the usual big money seats are, there was a big screen of oversized fans. That was bizarre.

18 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:38 pm

Since Betts signed for a gazillion dollar extension, seems like it’s time for contracts for a couple of Yanks.

19 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:38 pm

[3] I heard the Nats asked Dr. Fauci to throw out the first pitch tonight. Did it happen?

20 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:39 pm

[19] Yup. Not a good throw

21 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:42 pm

[20] to be fair, his expertise is in helping people not catch things...

22 mhoward120   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:43 pm

I’m sorry but this is NOT the baseball I’ve been used to for more than 60 years.

23 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:43 pm

Is that a BLM on the mound or am I getting a mirror image?

24 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:43 pm

Guess Sánchez forgot about the no spitting rule

25 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:44 pm

Yep BLM

26 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:47 pm

I went to Nats Park two years ago when visiting my sister in DC. They had good spicy French fries, but the beer was too expensive ($10 for a DosXX).. wonder when we can go to a game again?

Hey Boat, you see the NPB games are on here too?

27 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:49 pm

Yes that’s a BLM on the back of the mound

28 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:50 pm

I go to Nats Park about 5 times a year. Some great food (love the schwarma, excellent crab cakes.)

29 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:53 pm

Tyler can fly!

30 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:55 pm

There is a place close to me that makes great vegan schwarma!

31 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 6:56 pm

That was nice. Good hitting. Good base running. Great speed.

32 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:03 pm

Is schwarma the same as kabob?

If so, that's what they call it in Japan.

33 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:05 pm

No, schwarma is usually beef sliced off of a rotating hunk of meat. Not really ndividual chunks like kabob

34 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:05 pm

[26] Yes I watched an NPB game the other night. However, it's difficult for me to get control of the home TV set. It's the wife's domain.

The game was great but it ended in a tie!

35 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:06 pm

(32) Basically kebabs, schwarmas and gyros are all the same sandwich family..and now I crave one at 9am here..

36 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:06 pm

[33] That's what what I'm talking about. It's called kabob out here and also in the UK, I think.

They have stands all over Tokyo, always run my Middle Eastern guys.

37 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:07 pm

Hernandez is awful

38 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:08 pm

[35] Yes, it's always the right time for kabob or whatever. Until after I eat it.

39 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:09 pm

Angel Hernandez. Sucking since 1991.

40 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:10 pm

(38) Azabu Market in Hiroo sells fresh falafel and pita bread from the Pita The Great guy, hummus and tahini sauce packs too..feck, may make a run there this afternoon to buy some.

Gary in mid-season K form..

41 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:11 pm

Those shots of empty seats are not working for me.

42 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:13 pm

[41] seriously! I kinda liked the cardboard fans in Citi Field.

43 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:13 pm

which remind me of the empty buildings with painted drapes on the way to Yankee stadium from my younger years...

44 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:16 pm

[40] That's a hike, dude. Even I would go that far for pita. ;>)

45 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:16 pm

[43] Yes. I remember that.

46 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:18 pm

I heard a great story on NPR yesterday about EA Sports piping in fan sounds at soccer matches. So, I'm assuming it's EA doing this. I've always liked baseball on the radio. This year I think I'll listen even more because I forget that the background noise is fake; I guess I'm comforted by it somehow. And despite Sterling's and Waldman's limitations, which I recognize, I like them both.

It's nice to have baseball back; and I think this might be the only sport we get until next baseball season.

47 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:21 pm

[3][7] It would be fun to have him throw out the first pitch if they hit the EA Sports "Boooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!" button. They could even use the recording from when he threw out the first pitch at the Nats game from last year.

48 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:22 pm

Tv wastes too much time showing fans anyway. Lol... The $%pn game last night in Chicago mentioned you could send in a selfie and they'd put you on a cardboard cutout in the rattle your chains seats. (I think that's what AB calls them)

49 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:23 pm

Wade is terrific

50 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:25 pm

Come on, Hicks.

51 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:31 pm

Stanton the early rbi leader.

52 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:31 pm

Nice work, Stanton. Stay healthy, dude.

53 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:32 pm

A-Rod basically calling Stanton a weenie?

54 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:33 pm

10 ks in 5. Dayyyum.

55 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:34 pm

[53] Another food reference. You're killing me.

56 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:36 pm

We tried to have weenies tonight for the game but they went bad. Very odd.

57 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:39 pm

[48] I like the idea.

58 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:43 pm

It turns out, cameramen are important.

59 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:44 pm

(BTW, Hi all!)

60 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:45 pm

[59] Hey RIYank!

61 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:46 pm

Maybe Cole will be good. Like Arods comment about lack of fans being a benefit for Stanton

62 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:47 pm

(59) Yo! Wow, plenty of the Banter gang are here.
We’re on. 4 day weekend in Japan, planned for the now cancelled Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Plenty sofa time ahead now we have baseball again

63 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:49 pm

Gary really looks lost.

64 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:49 pm

[59] Howdy.

So basically every game this season is a Rays home game.

65 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:51 pm

Max is back ou there.

66 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:52 pm

God, ESPN is so terrible.

67 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:53 pm

Oops! Okay, well, officially under rain delay...

68 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:53 pm

Uh oh, rain and lightning. Official game though.

69 mhoward120   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:53 pm

Really dumb-ass playoff system.

70 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:54 pm

[62] I think you guys should be fine to hold the Games next year at this time.
Oh, well, as long as you don't let Americans come. Or I guess Russians. Or Brazilians.

71 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:54 pm

Crap. Thunderstorms in DC in the summer. Who’d a thunkit?

72 RIYank   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:55 pm

[69] It is. I'm anticipating being really pissed off that the Red Sox sneak in as the 8-seed, and don't even have to win a play-in game or anything.

73 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:55 pm

Under this year’s “rules” they start the game from when it ends. So it’s not official yet

74 yankintexas   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:57 pm

Did I hear correctly that home field advantage means playing no road games? Not that it really matters without fans

75 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 23, 2020 7:58 pm

Well, that was fun while it lasted. I wish it was official.

76 knuckles   ~  Jul 23, 2020 8:01 pm

Hey all
A fun if weird start

In any normal year where the Yankees started the season ten miles from my house I’d be there with bells on. Would have loved a Bens Chili Bowl half smoke tonight.

77 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 8:06 pm

Radar doesn’t look good for the rest of the night. Finish tomorrow?

78 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 9:27 pm

raining here now...

79 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 9:43 pm

apparently tarp off and game at 11

80 rbj   ~  Jul 23, 2020 9:51 pm

Not waiting up. Cole and Scherzer are out.

81 seamus   ~  Jul 23, 2020 9:53 pm

Game was called I just saw. The YAAAAANNNNNKKKKKKEEEEEEESSSSS WIN!

82 GaryfromChevyChase   ~  Jul 23, 2020 9:59 pm

Guess ESPN had it wrong. Game over, Yankees win. Night all

83 RIYank   ~  Jul 24, 2020 5:51 am

[82] They had it wrong, despite interviewing the actual commissioner of baseball, during the game broadcast.

84 seamus   ~  Jul 24, 2020 7:43 am

[83] sup RI! I was confused about that because I haven't followed all of the rules changes. Too appalled at the nonsense I heard about extra innings.
