RIP-CPM

carn

Milton Parker, the back-of-the-house partner at the Carnegie Deli, passed away yesterday. He was 90. From the New York Times:

According to savethedeli.com, a Web site that celebrates delicatessens nationwide, Mr. Parker’s business card read “Milton Parker, CPM (corned beef and pastrami maven).” Mr. Levine’s card reads “MBD (Married Boss’s Daughter).”

Besides the quality and belly-bulging portions of the Carnegie Deli’s menu items, several other factors brought fame to the restaurant. Dozens of delis dot the streets of the theater district. For years, the Stage Delicatessen — near the Carnegie, on Seventh Avenue — had a superior reputation. But in 1979, Carnegie pastrami was judged better by The New York Times. That touched off what newspaper articles called the Pastrami War. Both establishments fared well, with customers lining up down the block.

“Them?” Mr. Parker said at the time of his rival. “They’re living off our overflow.”

It certainly did not hurt business, five years later, when Mr. Allen’s movie “Broadway Danny Rose” was released, with some scenes shot at the Carnegie.

Kind of makes you hungry, no?

I like meat, but I've never been a pastrami or corned beef fan, no matter how much they pile it on. I do understand the significance, tho. That picture must have been taken at dawn, I've never seen the Carnegie Deli without a line in front of it... >;)

Broadway Danny Rose is definitely one of my favorite Woody movies, top five for me, easy...it's even funny en espanol.

am I completely wrong for thinking the pastrami at Carnegie is third best in town behind Katz's and 2nd Ave? "The Woody Allen" on the other hand though is an exercise in amazingness, "lotsa corned beef and lotsa pastrami"

damn this can of Progresso for lunch is suddenly looking very lacking.

Man oh man. You had to post that just before lunch, didn’t ya?
The plain old ham and swiss sitting in my office fridge just doesn’t seem so appealing at the moment.

There is nothing better than good pastrami...and nothing worse than bad pastrami.

[4] Katz is still #1 in my book.

I took my wife to Carnagie for the theater, and to get what looks like a football covered with cheese on a plate! Their Ruben is legendary as are their many other choices and they all influence delis from as far away as Nashville, TN (The Noshville Deli), and Miami Beach, FL (Arnie and Richie's now Roasters 'n Toasters). You're never far away from New York if you can get a great deli meal made to order! Noshville even sells Carnagie's meats and cheesecakes there, getting them shipped in overnight from day to day!

Phoning in your order ahead beats the crowds any day!

[0] Oh merciful Amida Buddha..please bless us with a real deli here in Tokyo..for all the amazing food here there isn't a real NY Deli or Brooklyn pizza joint...a curse on you Alex for that picture!

[10] With the Sumo pot scandal Jazz, it's a wonder there is any food left in Tokyo at all! It's going to take years for South Carolina to replenish their food stocks since Michael Phelps left!

[11] haha, did you hear the latest, ANOTHER wrestler busted for smoking pot, he's been expelled from Sumo for good and was arrested the other day..public drunkenness laughed at here but stay away from the herb or else you'll spend time in the slammer..

[12] If pot assumes the role of drug of choice with the kids where you are in Asia as it has in places like The Netherlands, (the way methyl amphetamine, anabolic steroids, and corporate greed and corruption are now here apparently) there won't be any food left period! Well, at least all the "good food"... like cookies! Here, we're just losing lives, teeth, money, jobs, souls, and baseball's integrity, but there is still plenty of food...

Come to think of it, I'd almost rather have a shortage of food.
