"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Yeah, Yeah, Now Check the Method

Freddy Garcia got lit up but good this afternoon. He gave up seven runs, didn’t make it out of the third, and yet the Yanks were still leading when he went to the showers. That’s cause they put up six runs in the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Robinson Cano. It came off the second Orioles pitcher of the day, Chris Jakubauskas, who threw Cano nothing but fastballs. I couldn’t figure it at the time and sure enough, Cano ripped the seventh pitch he saw into the right field bleachers.

The Orioles kept at it–they scored a run off our old pal, Scott Proctor (and yes, the comments section here was alive with mordant humor)–but the Yanks stayed in front thanks to two home runs by Jesus Montero, a solo homer and a two-run shot, both to right field. Couple of curtain calls, the full Monty.

Sometimes they don’t come easily and even Mariano Rivera struggled.

He allowed a run in the ninth and there were runners on second and third when he struck out J.J. Hardy to end the game.

Hey, perfection is overrated. Bottom line, Mo got the save, Yanks got the win.

Exhale, lay back, smile.

Final Score: Yanks 11, O’s 10.

1) Yippee!

3 Sliced Bread   ~  Sep 5, 2011 5:45 pm

the standings don't mean shit until the season is over, but it's worth noting the Yanks are now 3 games up in the Burnett column.

Fitting that most pitchers today seemed to labor.

the rain better hold up tomorrow so I can witness, with my own eyes, Our Lord and Savior

[5] Oh, nice.
This is the year 1 A.D., right? Or do we wait until next year?

7 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 7:24 pm

Damn day games, I missed the arrival of Jesus!!! I'm sure it's a great game thread, Scott Proctor sighting too!!
2.5 games up, I like it..keep going! No mercy!!

[7] Dude, you should have followed the star! You could have been one of those magi from the East. (Don't forget to view the highlights of the Sox-Jays game, by the way. There's really only one highlight worth looking at, actually.)

[8] What is it? Save me the trouble, I've just spent a half hour praying to Jesus.

BTW, I agree with the gang that "Jesus is Loose" is lame. He can get around the pronunciation thing by cutting the line up. Jesus is Loose. He has risen again! I expect further development.

And don't talk about being offensive to devote Christians. "An A-Bomb by A-Rod" is the most offensive call in the history of sports...especially when Matsui was on the team. Jesus!

10 RIYank   ~  Sep 5, 2011 8:05 pm

[9] Oh, it's obvious. The very last play of the game.

I'm just telling you, John will steer clear of any even vaguely Christian overtones. But I agree that he'll come up with something else soon/eventually.

[9] +1 Internets for you!

=)

[11] On second thought, I'm still going back and forth between "An A-Bomb for Arod" and "Look at that little monkey run" ...

Though, frankly, I'm sure there's plenty of unspeakable horrible things that were said during sporting events in the 1st half of the 20th century that were thankfully not preserved on tape ...

13 Just Fair   ~  Sep 5, 2011 8:32 pm

[9] Lawrie's home run antics were something. Stare, bat flip, stuck his tongue out between 1st and 2nd and kept it out. He then showed some mad hops jumping to home plate from about 8 feet away. He is already on my players I loathe list. Not today, though. He kinda makes Shelly Duncan look as dull as Mr. Rogers. Finally, Jesus is loose is lame indeed.

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 8:39 pm

[8] Can't wait to watch both tonight! Would have been a Magi but in this Buddhist/Shinto/Shop-ist land there was no sighting..

[12] The A-Bomb was just terrible..not familiar with "look at the monkey run" but sounds dreadful!

[13] Go Go Blue Jays!

15 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 5, 2011 8:40 pm

12) Not entirely fair on the Cosell call there. He'd used that reference several times for white players too.

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 8:51 pm

[15] That was Cosell? Never heard bout that one..probably not a phrase to continue with in this era!

I dunno, there's something both quaint and drop-dead funny imaging either Sterling or Suzyn yelling "JEEZUS!!!" as if something had just scared the living shit out of them. I'm surprised no one brought up the second-coming thing after his second homer...

How many English dictionary words are there that are used as a substitute for saying "Jesus H. Christ"?

20 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 9:38 pm

[18,19] What's happening, Chyll? Sterling and Suzyn..Jesus may make them convert! :)

[20] Been busy, Jazz. Films, events; I've cleaned up after them all. Living the chump-change life for the sake of art!

22 William J.   ~  Sep 5, 2011 10:27 pm

I am hoping he changes it to Dinero...from Montero, said to the tune of A Thrilla...from Godzilla.

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 10:39 pm

[21] It's a hard life but we got to stay steady! I'm doing a lot of Mr.Mom at the moment between boring money work and jazz projects. Full steam ahead.

[22] That would be great. Btw, anyone catch Paulie and Singleton the other day saying "yeah, Happy Birthday to Hawk Harrelson, he's 70. Always a lot of fun to listen to". WTF?!

24 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 5, 2011 11:26 pm

[22] That's a great one! All I could think of is "Say Jesus (Spanish pronunciation)! It's the FULL MONTY!

[15] Did he really? I wasn't aware of that. I was watching the game when he said the Alvin Garrret line, but I don't remember hearing it. Had to read about it the next day. Actually, that episode was the beginning of the end for him on Monday Night wasn't it?

25 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 11:27 pm

Wow, SUPERB game thread today gentlemen! Hysterical stuff from everyone, I'm thankful! (Praise Jesus!)

26 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 5, 2011 11:32 pm

Watching the game a bit now..Freddy really shaky.
Sad seeing Willie Randolph coaching 3rd for the O's..quote a fall from big-league manager to 3rd base coach for the awful Orioles..

27 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 6, 2011 12:31 am

Went to the game today with my family to soothe my son with his realization that school starts tomorrow.

We certainly got full value watching this game. Freddy just didn't have it, but the reasons could have included a trivial matter like a cloudy humid day...who knows?

Cano's grand slam at bat was a thing of beauty. The HR seemed inevitable.

IMHO, Jesus' second curtain call was uncalled for, and a little much. Hopefully this is the start of Jesus the Superstar.

Couldn't tell why Mo's cutter didn't cut, and he pitched a number of "regular" fastballs. The crowd was extremely nervous of the potential blown save. Big relief.

And how about that double error play, that ended up an out at third? First the ball gets through the infield near Robinson Cano, then Jones boots the ball in the outfield, then the relay is dropped, and finally Jeter gets the ball to third in time for the tag(from the grandstand the runner looked safe). The crowd sounds of oohs, moans, and cheers within 10 seconds was funny. THAT was a play that was not replayed on the video screen.

Anyway, dare I say that all of a sudden everything seems to be clicking for the Yankees and Boston seems on the ropes. I know there is a lot of baseball left, but this team is peaking at the right time. WIth Montero a potential force, Arod probably getting in the groove, Jeter hitting (Minka must have sapped his life force), Cano looking like the most dangerous hitter in the AL at this moment, and the normal we expect from Granderson, Tex, Swish and the rest, the line up must be the most feared. Pitching...good enough. How this will play in the short opening PS series remains to be seen.

28 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 6, 2011 12:43 am

My apologies to Andruw Jones. It was Dickerson who booted the ball in the outfield for the play described above.

29 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 6:06 am

Watching more of the game now. Cano's long AB before the Grand Salami was amazing. What a hitter!

And dear Michael Kay: We don't give a flying fuck what Buck Showalter's reaction to that is! He manages the O's, not the Yankees!

30 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 6:15 am

Wow, UZR and Fangraphs talk on YES!

31 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 6:34 am

More solo-time-warp Game Thread™ chat.
Scott Proctor..I'm not an athlete so I really can't understand that mentality of "they call you, you pitch" even if you KNOW you are hurting..don't these guys have any long-term perspective? Or is it just the competitive nature so intense that it overwhelms common sense?

32 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:01 am

Kay talking about doing baseball research with his new wife..that's exciting.

33 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:04 am

[32] Actually, that's kind of cool. Mrs. Jazz still can't get through more than three innings of a game on tv..

34 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:14 am

Smiley Andino with the tater! Proctor better have saved up some retirement cash, he won't be in the bigs much longer..

35 seamus   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:16 am

MR OK Jazz!! That was a fun game to watch despite the bad pitching. Plus obviously it's fun to get excited about our young hitter.

36 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:19 am

[35] Hey seamus, still only getting to bottom of the 5th here. But got a Paulaner Hefe-Weizen beer to crack open after getting the jazz kids to bed so ready to embrace Jesus.

37 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:20 am

Clear signs of psychosis but I'm not able to watch a whole game without being part of a game thread, even if it's my own private one!

38 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:25 am

Wow, Jesus crushed that one to right-center! Love opposite field homers!

39 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:31 am

Kay & Singleton with the Scooter Memorial™ "Birthday Shout-outs", nice.

Aaron Laffey..zero idea who this is or why he is pitching for the Yankees. Hopefully neither he nor Proctor will be on the field again down the stretch.

40 seamus   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:39 am

[39] crazy use of them yesterday. seemed unnecessary. but then, if there is anyone to throw those kinda guys at, baltimore might be it.

41 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:46 am

WHOA! That second homer by Jesus was crazy, he hit a ball out of the strike zone way into the right-field seats. Jesus Loves Me, yes I know, cause John Sterling told me so!!!

42 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:48 am

[40] Man, Baltimore is just awful. Will they run out Corporal Lance Pendelton by the time this game is over?

Loved the dugout reaction on that second homer by the kid.

43 seamus   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:05 am

[42] it's really cool how the excitement over that kid runs frm the dugout to the stands to the fans at home. pretty exciting!

44 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:06 am

Very shaky Mo..but he gets it done! Great game, and always a pleasure to beat that Richard Vernon manager of the O's.
Solo-game thread finished, time to slumber. Praise Jesus and our Lord Mariano!

45 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:07 am

[43] That was amazing. Is he going to make the post season roster? I don't know the rules on that, dates, Injured List, etc.

Have a good one, Hefe-Weizen finished here and feeling sleepy!

46 seamus   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:11 am

[45] when he came up they were saying he can be on the post-season roster and that Girardi said it was possible. I kind of forget the rule on that and was surprised it was feasible. But that'd be so cool. Sleep well my friend!
