Stupid hot day here in the Big Egg, I'm looking forward to a couple hours of followng the game and gazing out the window here at ACME. Summertime!

2 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 24, 2012 8:36 pm

It was hot like soup over at the primordial ooze aka the Gowanus canal today. I nearly passed out from exhaustion inside the warehouse I day-play in, but I covered it up as a yawn. My co-workers were amazed that I even yawned; apparently they thought I never got tired. The weather here has been bananas. And I hate bananas...

Can Freddy kill the King? "I'm going down; down, down, down, down, down"

Curtis begins the regicide.

The long ball giveth ... and the long ball taketh away.

Chief getting his sprints in.

9 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:23 pm

A pleasure listening to Singleton and Cone.

Wonder if Cashman has any more moves brewing..

10 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:26 pm

Damn, thought that was in.

11 Matt Blankman   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:29 pm

Crazy hot and a long-ass work day. I'm shot. Relaxing with the ballgame and Charlie Parker, Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes. If only I could sleep in tomorrow.
Go Yanks!

12 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:29 pm

Dang, that shot by Chavez on Hernandez was a Charlie Brown moment.

13 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:37 pm

Fat Freddy's flinging filth!

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:38 pm

Nice heckler caught by the mikes there. "Are you blind, ump?!"

15 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:43 pm

[9] I caught Cashman on the Kay show in the car today. He said he didn't expect making a move for someone like Ichiro until Gardner was confirmed out for the year. He also said (of course) that there are no pressing needs right now, and with Joba coming back it's like getting a new arm in the BP. He also said that old man George would have been ecstatic over the Ichiro deal.

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:43 pm

[11] Sounds good! Though some of those box-sets have way too many alt takes and snippets..makes for hard listening sometimes unless you're a Bird scholar.

17 Matt Blankman   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:45 pm

[16] This is 3 discs, 65 cuts, just the masters, so you don't have to wade through 5 takes of each tune. They do have a more comprehensive set, I believe - Complete Savoy & Dial Sessions. That's a bit much for me. It's amazing early Bird.

18 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:49 pm

[17] Oh, that sounds perfect then. I believe there is a set out there which has hundreds of tracks of just his solos..all bootleg recordings by some crazy Italian fan who followed Bird around the country..need to look that up.

Bk after lunch!

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:51 pm

Blargh ... too much Saunders ...

20 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:53 pm

Thinking about Sherman Hemsley who died today at 74. Something about his George Jefferson role was profoundly impressive to me. He really is in that deeelux apartment in the sky right now. RIP

21 seamus   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:54 pm

maybe didn't get them but ichiro's arm is still damn good.

22 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:54 pm

The Chief is getting blooped to death out there.

23 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:58 pm

Fredddie does not inspire a lot of confidence.

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 9:59 pm

[20] I'm afraid I'm going to have to mark you down for a -1 Internets for the "deluxe apartment in the sky" riff, I will do so with a smile and pass along the following small slice of total awesome:

The Yankees have been hitting the ball hard tonight, just not falling in, except for Curtis'. There will be more runs tonight.

Didn't Hernandez just balk right there?

29 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:08 pm

[27] So TOTALLY AWESOME in fact, that my friends and I have made the decision that going forward, we'll refer to acid as "Hemsley", rather than "Heston", as we had done for over a decade ...

30 seamus   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:14 pm

damn that totally sucked

31 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:15 pm

33 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:17 pm

Well, that was not so good. Just a fly ball from Cano or Raul was needed there. Good AB by Tex, and Chavez at least hit it hard.

39 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:32 pm

[29] I finally read all of the badass article about Hemsley. LA in the 70's and 80's led to some strange bed-fellows, with drugs the great equalizer. Gentle Giant on Dinah? That in itself tells the story.

I lived in LA from 1978-1986 and again from '89-'92. Lots of stories, and craziness...

40 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:37 pm

Freddy is pitching well. Mostly bad luck is why he is behind, and the Yankees have had a lot of chances to tie or go ahead.

41 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:41 pm

[39] Incredible. Thanks for that link, Cult! Also receommend checking out SammY Davis Jr singing the theme song from the Jeffersons, swinging goodness.

Great expression on A-Rod's face after that nasty pitch.

42 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:47 pm

To those watching Yes. Isn't that Corona commercial (the one where "she couldn't get away") something? It was great last year, and I'm glad they revived it. That one shot from behind the woman in her business suit....

Chief deserves the win. RUNS!

43 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 24, 2012 10:49 pm

Watching old episodes of The Jeffersons willl never be the same. I loved that show as a kid.

44 thelarmis   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:00 pm

holy crap, that's whack about george jefferson.

i love Gong & Gentle Giant. my fusion trio is definitely influenced by those groups. we're playing a gig in 3 weeks. you're all invited!

66 thelarmis   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:19 pm

i hope a-rod's hand is ok...

67 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:19 pm

[56] Hernandez hit Arod square on the wrist. He was writhing in pain, and left the game. And now Lucas Loogey nearly hit Raul in the head.

68 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:19 pm

I know none of this is intentional but still...WHAT IN THE FUCK?!

75 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:25 pm

[71] That seems somewhat presumptive. It certainly looked like it hurt, though ...

76 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:25 pm

[71] Got to wait for the x-rays. Until then, who knows? It sure as hell didn't look or sound good.

77 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:26 pm

[75] Grandpa Jazz watching in NYC just texted..said he broke his wrist once and remembers holding it just like that..am hoping that's an Abe Simpson memory and not accurate now..

78 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:33 pm

Oh shit, it's Chad Qualls ... ugh.

79 thelarmis   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:34 pm

chad qualls in a 1-run game.

80 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:34 pm

Seriously, what part of CHAD QUALLS IS FUCKING TERRIBLE isn't obvious, huh, Joey Joe Joe???

81 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:35 pm

And now we got to worry about Cano's hand or wrist. Cripes!

82 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:38 pm

This WAS a snappy two hour game. Why is the tomato can Qualls still on this team?

83 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:39 pm

[75] Wrist/hand injuries are brutal. One basically curtailed Nomar's career. He still played, but was never the same.

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:40 pm

[83] Well, yes. But there we go with the presumptive part again, right?

[83] Gardner?

86 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:43 pm

holy fuck. throw strikes!

i really hope a-rod is ok...

88 thelarmis   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:44 pm

[86] they do each have 5 letters.

89 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:44 pm

As a fan, this is agony. What do you think Girardi is thinking? Chief only had 87 pitches, should have stayed in the game.

I wonder how much the Mariners are paying Chone Figgens not to play?

90 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:45 pm

98 thelarmis   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:53 pm

if we have to trade for a power hitting 3rd basement next week, who do we target? mike schmidt might be good...

99 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 24, 2012 11:54 pm

[84] True... but are you watching the game? We've seen hiundreds of HBPs/injuries over the years. A player's reaction is very indicative of the severity of the injury. Guy's don't act like ARod did with a contusion or bone bruise. Did you see how he wouldn't let the trainer take his hand? We might get lucky, but that was a 'something's fractured/broken' reaction.

If Arod goes on the DL, does that mean a revisit from NunE5? Chavez can't play everyday.

THAT was a most unsatisfying game. Goodnight.

Otto West: Don't call me stupid.
Wanda: Oh, right! To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people! I've known sheep that could outwit you. I've worn dresses with higher IQs. But you think you're an intellectual, don't you, ape?
Otto: Apes don't read philosophy.
Wanda: Yes they do, Otto. They just don't understand it. Now let me correct you on a couple of things, OK? Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not "Every man for himself." And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up.

110 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:03 am

111 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:05 am

Mo Damn, but I love that movie. I've rewatched it several times recently, and it still holds up ... and Kevin Kline deserves the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award that he won ...

112 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:08 am

[111] Agreed and Agreed!

My afternoon is soured now waiting for the inevitable "A-Rod out for the season" announcement..

113 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:17 am

From RAB:
1:10am: A-Rod suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left hand and is going to the DL. That’s better than a displaced fracture but still sucks. They won’t know the exact timetable for his return until he sees the doctors in New York on Thursday. Fan-friggin’-tastic.

114 thelarmis   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:18 am

broken hand for a-rod.

NOT GOOD!!!

115 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:18 am

[113] Actually, it could have been a lot worse.
[99] We might get lucky, but that was a 'something's fractured/broken' reaction.

116 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:23 am

[115] Well, here's a question. Have you ever broken *your* wrist?

Because *I* have.

And I didn't make that reaction. Or anything close to it.

So ... I'll just say, you're *still* reading a lot into something coincidental.

117 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:29 am

[116] Which, in the end, isn't to say that Alex didn't have a reaction of "OMG something just broke", it's just that difference between "OMG, that really fucking hurts" and "OMG that really fucking hurts and something's broken" is smaller than you would think ... and possibly smaller than most people can tell ...

118 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:32 am

[116] OK.... with that reaction, maybe ARod is jsut a cry baby and just had a little boo-boo.

"Once the bone is reset and back in its normal form, a cast or splint will be applied. This is to prevent the bone from being moved out of position during the time it will take to heal. Broken bones heal rather quickly, taking anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the severity of the break. Since bone fractures can be quite painful, a prescription or over-the-counter pain killers may be recommended throughout the healing process."

119 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:35 am

A non-displaced fracture does NOT need to be reset, but it seems the 4 to 12 weeks may still apply.

120 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:37 am

[118] And?

I was in a cast for over a month.

I had no idea idea my wrist was broken until it was x-rayed.

It felt weird, but there was NO pain.

I've seen people react like Alex did and jog down to first and keep playing.

But, you know, whatever, congratulations ...

121 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:44 am

From RAB Posters:
Chavez is saying he had the exact same injury and it took him 8 weeks on the nose.

Waldman says 6-8 weeks.

Considering that mIlb is done by then, there wiil be no rehab games. I also read that some physical therapy is usually called for. Maybe we get lucky, ARod plays the last 2 weeks and gets in shape for the PS, but this could be season over for Alex.

122 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:53 am

[121] Ichiro better start hitting home runs.

123 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 25, 2012 12:56 am

Oh, and the Yankees better hit some Mariners. #vengeance

BTW, aside from Ichiro, Seattle has given us nothing but bad luck this year...starting with Pineda. [knocking wood]
