The Yanks and Rays hit a lot of solo home runs last night in a soporific affair at the Stadium. In the 8th inning, Michael Kay complained about the deadly pace of the game. I listened to the 9th on the radio where John and Suzyn had similar complaints—and they weren’t wrong.
This one ended on a positive note, when Tyler Austin’s solo shot in the bottom of the 9th won it for the Yanks. Final Score: 5-4.
Another win. More fun. Boring or not, we will take it.

Dare we ask for more? (Dare, dare). You know how the Rays give the Yanks problems.

So last night was the game the Yanks should have lost, right? Because they don’t sweep series when they matter in 2016, right? Uh, maybe not. They beat the Jays 2-0 last night thanks to marvelous work by Bryan Mitchell and Luis Severino, and the Bombers sit just a couple of games outside of the second playoff spot.
Stranger things have happened.
Indeed they have.
Yanks look to irritate the contenders and made good on that promise yesterday beating the Jays, 5-3. That Masahiro Tanaka sure has been a solid professional, huh?
The Yanks host the Jays for a matinee in the Bronx after a nice win yesterday in Baltimore. All is quiet early this afternoon in the Bronx—these precious last moments of relative peace, the end of summer before everyone comes back and school starts and everything is cooking again, makes Labor Day my favorite weekend of the year in NYC.
The sun is peaking out by mostly it’s overcast. An autumn chill has been welcome the past few days and it will be more than comfortable at the Stadium this afternoon. Maybe our boys can give the Jays a hard time.
Never mind the standings:
Let’s Go Yank-ees!
Yanks arrive in Baltimore for a three game set and 2-1/2 games behind for the second wild-card spot. While that speaks volumes about their resilience throughout this largely mediocre season (and a little about how watered-down the playoff format has become of late), I am more impressed by how the Baby Bombers (Sanchez, Judge, et al) have made such impacts the moment they were entrusted with reasonable playing time. And now that it’s largely because of this impact that the Yankee September call ups has been more about strategy than development; the most intriguing of the Six Pack arriving being Jonathan Holder, who since being drafted two years ago has cruised through the minors with a 1.63 ERA and forced Cashman’s hand as they try to make their way once again into the playoffs.
Looks like reinforcements are on the way…
The end of summer is a melancholy time. The long days, the heat, the abundance from the garden—tomatoes and corn are still out of this world for the next few weeks—all coming to an end. For the Yanks, baseball probably, too, when the summer turns to fall. But that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate each and every game we’ve got left—especially if the Yanks can make things thorny for the other contending teams.
More in K.C. tonight.

I’m not sure if C.C. Sabathia has talked about his sobriety this summer, but if he is still sober—no small accomplishment in a first year of sobriety—that is precisely what I’m curious about. Sabathia has been victimized by a ton of dinky hits this year and I wonder if he has a longer view on such occupational misfortune now. Does being sober impact the way he handles disappointment? How is the baseball life different now that he isn’t drinking? Is it even something he talks to his teammates about? I wonder.
Yesterday, C.C. reminded me of David Wells, smooth, expert, he was really pitching out there. Ran into some bad luck and got hit with a loss as the O’s took the final game of the series, 5-0. It happens. That said, C.C. has been one of the best things about the team this year. I’m happy for the big man.
Holy Moly. While your friendly host has been sleeping his way through what seemed like a dull season, Baby Huey Gary Sanchez has gone on a run that makes similar hot streaks by Kevin Maas and Shane Spencer seem like an insufficient comparison. Fastest guy to ever hit 11 fingers. Dumb stat, sure, but still…Who knows how his career will turn out, but the guy might be legit—although not this legit.
The goddamn kid hit another dinger today—that makes 10 in the last 12 games—as the Yanks put another beaten’ on the O’s (13-5) and stoked their slender but not unfathomable playoff chances.
Go figure, man. What fun.

The Yanks won another game yesterday. Our boys are playing well enough to encourage the dreamiest of us to imagine them making a serious run at the second wild card. I don’t see it happening, but far as I can tell, they are playing with house money as nothing is expected of them. This makes it all the more enjoyable for us…Don’t it?
As in, no “W” for Los Baby Bombers last night in Seattle, in spite of two more homers from Garry—Don’t-Call-Me-Kevin-Maas-Or-Shane-Spencer—Sanchez.
